Fun fact: The four posters that appear in this game are taken from promos found in 90s anime magazines. The promos are for Slayers Special, Black Jack OVA Vol. 6, Sorcerer Hunters and Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko. The Slayers and Black Jack posters specifically were pulled from the June 1996 issue of Newtype Magazine (The one featuring "VS Knight Lamune & 40 Fire" on the cover).

The level design in some of these games like this one is just masterful and super creative. Areas flooded, or switches raise walkways that kind of connect and make whole the entire level by connecting previous areas all together. Probably one of the most underrated FPS's of the 90's. It came out at a time when Quake was out for over a year and Quake 2 was on the horizon so the idea of a 2d/3d shooter just wasn't as enticing and seen as wrongly inferior. But damn has it aged like fine wine. Unlike Quake 2, the amount of atmosphere, ambience, humor and gorgeous pixelated art really made it stand the test of time where replaying the singleplayer is always fun.

LOL! The reason why the grenade launcher has a large AOE is because you're supposed to fire at corners in to a crowded area, which is why the grenades bounce off walls, detonate on impact and only affect those within it's FOV. You use the rocket launcher for direct sight and grenades for bouncing off walls and clearing the next room.

My only 2 complaints about classic SW are: levels sometimes are structured like a maze and I have no idea what to do next and sometimes puzzles are taking away a bit too much time on my side. Otherwise I freaking love SW series.

Awesome review. Shadow Warrior is by far my favorite Build Engine game, primarily because there were so many unique settings, making me look forward to each new level, wondering what it was going to look like and feel like. I particularly enjoyed the many different outdoor areas, some of which gave me a mild case of vertigo. I also loved the color palettes throughout. It was truly a beautiful game. And yes, it was a difficult game, but I managed to finish it, which is saying something, because usually if a game is too difficult, I just give up on it after a while. But the unpredictable level design kept me pushing onward, eager to see what was around the next corner. Extremely fond memories. I really need to give it another go.

One thing most people seem to miss with the shotgun is that you can actually cancel the 4 shot burst fire short by either clicking fire again or changing fire modes. It gives you just an extra level of control on your shotgun, and I love it. Also the invisibility potion works way better than most other FPS's invisibility because the enemies can't attack you at all until it's over, and your fists do more damage while it's active. You can use this to cheese the final boss.

I find Blood the most difficult of Built Engine games, it is down to how bloody quick hitscanners are in that game. Shadow Warrior has many traps and level gimmicks that made it difficult but enemies in general aren't as evil as in Blood. Ion Fury is very much like Shadow Warrior, and that is why I like it so much.

Cool review! My cousin and I spent dozens if not hundreds of hours making levels in the build engine for DN3D, throughout several years. Then we were very excited when I got SW, mostly because there were new effects and advances in the Build engine. But we ended up under the impression that the game showcased some effects that weren't possible to replicate in the Build software. But we were kids, internet wasn't what it is today, and we didn't even read English at the time. So I mean, who knows.

I played this on my school macbook during quarantine and was also my first game in the classic Build engine trilogy I still think this game has a lot more character and meat than what the 2 reboot games had and I still liked the reboot games a lot so I'm excited to see if they can combine both for Shadow Warrior 3. (Kinda ironic that the lesser of the 3 games is still going on. We seriously need a Blood reboot or something)

"I'm not sure any game engine has made it so cathartic to shoot a hole in the wall with a rocket launcher." I'd argue the Frostbite engine does some pretty satisfying things in the BF series. Like say, when you make the whole 3rd floor corner of a house vanish into an explosion of rubble to get rid of that cheeky sniper who's been hugging that window for 5 minutes. Or when you just run a building through with your out of ammo tank to teach those players that no, they totally aren't safe in that brick house. BF games have their issues, but I feel the visual spectacle of their dynamic destruction is a high point. But yes, there is something to be said about destroying the environment to get secrets and stuff.
