There is wayyyyy more to this story. The person [Ken] who took them to court is disabled. He tried to use the excuse that the game had become to complicated for him to use [semi valid but will not hold up in any court]. In an interview after the case was dismissed he admitted to not wanting to sue but was convince by .....get this...Derek Smart to sue CIG. He also admitted to buying more ships after he lost the lawsuit.

Worth noting that the ship shown for $350 is also buyable ingame. And i would argue gettin money ingame is so easy its hard to justify spending money on ships just to get the ship and not to support develoment. I made the money to buy a ship ingame that costs out of game $125 in like 4 ish hours and there are absolutly ways to make money faster, there isnt really any incentive to purchase ships for money.

SC has been my main game for awhile now. Bought my ship with $60 and got others through gameplay loops.

Keep in mind for SQ42, they said back in 2016 all the mission where playable and they are just polishing it up for release. CIG saying SQ42 is feature complete should be taken with a massive grain of salt.

The premise of the game is really ambitious from 2014 and until this day, Starfield proven that Star Citizen is really ambitious and too good to be true, it could be done just like Starfield but expect it wont be as good as everyone hoping it to be.

If it was allowed that after pledging money that you could just change your mind whenever you like and get a refund then the whole world of crowd funding would collapse. Pledging money to any project or cause does not make you a partner in it, and it does not give you any right to make demands on the direction of that project. I have given money for games that didn't even appear but I am a grown up and I understand the risks.

So glad I was able to get a full refund on this before the uk left the European Union. I was able to file a county court judgement against them to their uk office. Recived a full refund £980 including the court filing cost of £60 in 2019

You should add that tons of the ships you could buy previously which were not ingame yet are now. Usually, same as with the Ironclad recently, you buy a concept for a by far cheaper price compared to when that ship gets added to the game. Naturally, not every single aspect of the concept makes sense in production later on. That's why concepts are cheaper, let's say you buy "90% of what you imagine". But they do and did, in fact, get added. That's simply how crowdfunding always worked in every single case: You pay for an idea.

People still spending $150 every year for EVE and WOW subscriptions. WOW has made like 20 billion but no one cares because how does that affect you as a gamer you still have to pay $300 for that 2 year subscription next week

We had a similar policy when I worked retail. The back of the receipt said refunds up to 30 days, but employees were told to give up to 60 days if a genuine refund was reasonable. For instance if they abused the product, then no refund.

Ever taken a shit where it stops halfway? Then you take a big breath, struggle and double down trying to squeeze it out. Only to have it break off with the other half still inside you and be left red faced, gasping for air and back to square one. That's s.c development....

Absolutely amazing that a) this is still continuing and b) people are still throwing money at this mess. I know people that have spent nearly $5k on this 'game' and they now play maybe once a month, and when they do it usually ends up with a crash, falling through floor or server stability becoming so bad they have to quit (of course they'll defend it more than anything else because they've been ripped off and spent so much on it). The fact that people still throw money at the devs for this game is staggering, the fact that they have been able to raise $700m from this is truly baffling to me. 5 years time people will be looking back on these vids going 'oh wow, it's as close now to being 'ready' as it was back then' They really have hit the dream with this - half ass a game (half completed features, constant bugs, glitches, crashes & server stability issues), keep raising money based on promises and really poor demo's/beta's/trailers and get $700m+ coming in! Every time someone points out your game could be made by a semi competent studio for $100m and be released years ago, just set the fanboys on them and waffle about making a single player, money wasted on celeb voices actors for a single player game that's never coming and how what's being made is 'super special' and kick back to see more people that have wasted thousands throw more money at them.

I have very mixed feelings on the star citizen refund situation. I backed on the first day in 2012 (citizen number in the single digit thousands) and have never considered refunding as I view it as spent money. At the same time, I closed my wallet in 2014 when CIG decided to skip their first delivery target on the promise of 'more game tomorrow' as that's just bait and switch behavior and rewarding that gets you the situation we find ourselves in now. They said it was going to be a premiere VR experience when VR was a hot item, but they put down work on that in 2018 and haven't worked on it since. They advertised the campaign as fully co-op with drop-in drop-out capability but have since decided following through on that would be too hard. They sold a modding manual for mod support until October of 2023, taking money for it for the first ELEVEN full years of the project and then just took down the page and don't want to talk about mod support until one day maybe way after launch? Same with dedicated servers since you can't really have mods without dedicated servers but they don't want to acknowledge that they were selling that for a long time before they moved the goalposts. They at one point told people they could send their extra ships on missions with an NPC then reversed course on that (after the sales had wrapped up and the 30 day window had passed of course). So yeah, I won't be trying to get my 120 back, but CIG's behaviour is to tell you they are making X, take your money on the promise of doing it, then a few years later long after your check has cleared decide they'd rather do Y instead. At this point my only hope of seeing even a cut down version of what I thought I was going to get is depdent on credulous people with no pattern recognition throwing nearly 300k USD per day in to the money fire that is CIGs painfully slow development 'process' that is still producing alpha quality placeholders in year 12.

If you're certain the contract is unenforceable, the trick is to break it. That puts the financial onus on the other guy to start the proceedings.

Binding arbitration isn't supposed to be enforceable unless the buyer was made explicitly aware of it BEFORE purchasing. Burying it in a EULA that isn't available to read until after purchase isn't enough, but they still tend to be upheld by judges anyway.

By the way the star engine is the unreal engine underneath heavy custom licensed, like tencent did for their engine.

I was never a refund person and have always been positive but .23 release has changed my mind. They were at around 60 mil back then I’d guess btw. But master modes has truly made me wish I could click the refund button. They completely went back on their word regarding how the flight model would play.

just to clearify about the game package and Squadron 42, I think anyone who bought the game package before 2022-ish have Squadron 42 and Star Citizen within the 45$, CIG took the game out of the package as they were nearing completion, to probably cash Squadron 42 at a more regular game price on it's own when released.

They took SQ42 off all the game packages like a year ago, and there's currently no way to buy it. The only way you have it currently is if your pack is from before the change.

Star Citizen can take as much money as they want but that money was promised in exchange for ships that don't exist yet. Even at 700M, how much is left from it and how much will it take to fulfill all those promises? If this is not a scam is the classical sense, as there clearly is an intent to ship a product, they are in a Ponzi mode, or at least a "pay it forward" mode where they are financing current development for promises made in the past and some development are pushed ahead of schedule to show some improvement, just in time to trigger another "month of successful financing".

There is one part of me that wants to be outraged at RSI for being in posession of so much money without a final product even after 10 years, but there is another part of me that is so excited by the scope of their project and what they have accomplished. What doesn't sit well with me is this suspicion that the majority of funds they have collected have not actually gone to investing in the development of the title itself. They are so flamboyant with their videos, trailers, "citizen-Con". These talk shows and long winded monologues about how incredibly their tech is- all of which boast a pretty high production quality. They talk such a big game, constantly. They insist on continuing to expand the scope of their game without first refining whats already there. Its like developer ADHD. If I were a donor, Id be like "put your microphone down for 2 seconds and fix the 30ks...PLEASE" Im tempted to say: If only they prioritized their resources, we would be so much farther along by now. Im assuming they have not been transparent about how they spend their donations (right?) I think this would be a nice step towards transparency. Still, at the end of the day, for all of their flaws, gamers need developers like this - who are willing to march to the beat of their own drum. These guys keep me optimistic about the future of gaming

Not really 'deceptive' but they Def use manipulation and fomo when selling their digital products. They frequently 'sell out' of some ships (not sure how it's possible to run out of 3D models of space ships, but they do. I guess when you buy one they send you the actual computer file and then delete it from their computers and have to remake it from scratch each time?). They also have hidden layers of shops that you can't see or access until you have spent enough.

Just a few things to point out. You do not need to spend more then the initial 45 dollars for the starter pack. Most ships and vehicles can be purchased with ingame currency you earn just by playing the game. To further help out new players you can rent ships for a fraction of the ingame cost in order to start making money. As for concept ships you will be given loaner ships that fill a similar role till that ship is released. CIG is also very flexible with any ships you do decide to purchase with real money. Outside the refund period at any point you can "melt" your ships for store credit and use that credit to buy another ship. For example if I were to spend 100 dollars on a ship at any point I can melt the ship for 100 dollars of store credit and purchase two 50 dollar ships or any combination in-between.

Star Citizen could genuinely just do what Minecraft does. They can just launch the game now after perfecting the basics and just plan and launch yearly and biannual updates where they add massive new features. Why they've had to keep the game indev indefinitely is beyond me.

just fyi, you can't buy the solo game right now. They took it off the store after some promotion when they announced feature complete like 6 months ago. I think it was like $40 so when/if they release it they will put it for sale again for I'm gonna guess $70. To me it's a gamble not a scam, that's what backing a game or anything in development is. So the only thing I can't figure out about this conversation is why is everyone so mad that this indy developer makes a limitless purchase store with digital goods that will be useless when the game ends? I've spent about $200 on this game the last year and a half and don't play many other games (wartales and darkest dungeon also BG3). But cod players spend way more, D4 players more, every live service player I know is spending $1000's of dollars a year on one or two games. I just don't really get why it's bad that someone spend 300 once on that ship but COD, D4, WOW all rack up way more then that. People buy $120 AAA games that don't work and gasp about Star Citizen. I spent $45 to buy a starter ship and I haven't played Fallout, Skyrim, COD or any other fps aside from KKD since I got the game. Just my opinion but I would rather spend $100 on a buggy game that is trying to make something interesting and unique then $100 on some watered down hack broken down AAAA game that's gonna sell you things you don't need but with pretty packaging and a convenience charge. I just don't see the difference except I have fun on SC, still too buggy to be a daily driver but it's really no worse then my heavily modded FO4 and Skyrim were.

For the javelin destroyer, you need a whole server to crew it. Its a ship that will release later when they have a much higher player cap on the servers, when they have dynamic server meshing. The first server meshing will be static server meshing and will be like 100 player cap in all major areas, later that can be higher when can spin up multiple servers in one location.

The reason people (myself included) call it a scam is because what people paid for back in 2014 is not what the game is today, nor is it out. Also, people bought it on the premise of the game releasing after 1 to 2 years since the original kickstarter. The advertising was false and the goals have shifted, and the game is still not out, and they still keep asking for more money

Since the beginning of this project, they were very clear that the funds they collect will fund BOTH StarCitizen and Squadron42, so no it’s not a scam in that regard.

Star Citizen - Pitched a Chris Roberts space single player game. The Kickstarter was to show EA there was demand. They made so much they realozed they didn't need a publisher. At the end of the crowdfunding thry were left with some stretch goals that expanded the game incredibly. I was excited for the prospect for a new space fighter single player game. It did talk about multiplayer and wanted to develop it like minecraft did, early access basically. At the end of the crowdfunding they released a poll to all backers asking if they should keep the funding going, stop funding and hammer down on the game, and a few other options. The continual funding option won. I voted against. Star Citizen has always been about two games. A cinematic single player game, and an open world MMO like multiplayer universe. To continue funding they concentrated on the MMO, as the game has been in development for so long (a bit over the largest games to date time wise) festures have been added. The MMO is playable as an early access title (cost 45) and they communicate very well. I am excited for the game and my children are ready to crew ships with me.
