I'm so glad I watched this, thanks so much. I just got this exact plane in about the same condition and was just going to get it running but now I'm going to completely redo it.

This was a lot of fun to do and I was really happy with the result. Glad to hear you want to give it a shot as well! It's a great feeling taking something that is worn/rusty and making to shine again!

Yes they are. It's one of those tools that you buy whenever you see one - even if you already have it.

I did the same with mine. I look for reasons to use it. And if I don’t find any I make a reason to get it out. 😂 enjoyed the video. Happy woodworking!

I've recently inherited a Stanley 71 and am looking to restore this to a usable condition. You explained that you retapped some of the holes in your plane. Could I trouble you for the size of tap you used? Thank you kindly for a very educational and informative video.
@thetinkersshop543
@thetinkersshop543 9 ай бұрын
Hopefully I'm answering this correctly. The thumb screws have 28 threads per inch. The longer threaded rod where you make your depth adjustments has 24 threads per inch. The wire brush for cleaning those holes didn't quite clear things out, or some of the threads may have been dinged up or had too much rust, so I ran the tap in there to clear it all out. No more sticking when turning the thumbscrews of using the depth adjustment. Thank for watching, it's very appreciated!

I have an old Stanley 71-1/2 router plane. Is the base suppose to be perfectly flat? Mine curves up a little on each end. I'm wondering if it's warped.
@thetinkersshop543
@thetinkersshop543 Жыл бұрын
It depends on what you mean by curves up a little on each end. It should be mostly flat but not completely flat. About 1/8"-1/4" around the perimeter of mine curves up slightly (the rest is dead flat). This is to prevent having sharp/flush corners that might dig into the wood. Having the slightest curve or bevel on the edges keeps the plane moving smoothly as it rides up over tiny little imperfections in the wood. Hope this helps!

Just picked up my 71 the other day. It's missing a knob, so I get to re-inforce my skills as a turner :). Thank you for your steps you showed as I'm doing about the same. Just curious, what grit of sandpaper did you use to flatten the sole?
@thetinkersshop543
@thetinkersshop543 Жыл бұрын
The sole gave me some fits because there was a little bit of pitting that I had to work down to. That blue sandpaper in the video is actually 240 grit, which is pretty fine, but got it cleaned up enough for me to get a good look at things. Because of the pits, I ended up doing it again starting with going from an aggressive 80 grit, then working my way up to 320. Had those pits not been there, it would have been a simpler task and they were only in one small area of the sole. Unfortunately, you want to keep that sole flat, so that meant I had to do the entire sole with the aggressive grits and work my way up from there. No sense in trying to get a mirror finish since the sole is going to be getting a lot of contact with surfaces when using it. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for stopping by. Turning a new knob should be a fun project!

What black paint did you use? I assume it is metal paint...
@thetinkersshop543
@thetinkersshop543 3 ай бұрын
Yes, Rustoleum automotive primer and black. For the 207 bench drill video I used black paint used on engine blocks. I believe the brand was Dupli-color. It was the blackest paint I could find that matched the japanning of the bench drill. Had I known about that stuff when I did this router plane, I might have given that a try instead. Thanks for commenting!

Thanks, appreciate the comment. Had this same question a few months ago, so I have the answer at hand! The thumb screws have 28 threads per inch. The longer threaded rod where you make your depth adjustments has 24 threads per inch. Working on a few new videos at the same time over here....long story, but hopefully will have them ready soon.
