The Black Dahlia Murder's Trevor Strnad discusses growing up on tour, misogynist death metal, shoddy overseas equipment rentals, lukewarm five-layer burritos and if decency is truly over in a wide-ranging conversation with Low Estate guitarist and UCB comedian Geoff Garlock.

Don't know how a person can miss someone they've never met. R.I.P Trevor
@monster0033
@monster0033 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe it's not the actual person they miss but what they did while they were here or how they acted around everyone. Maybe it was the music he wrote, the way he got the crowd to react to their set's while on tour or just talking to the crowd after their set was over. All of that stuff does mean something to people when maybe they couldn't get any closer to Trevor as maybe they wanted or wished to. Trevor always seemed like a great person to know, and I would have loved to have gotten a chance to get to know him or hang out together. Sadly, that will never happen.

I keep saying this. I'm pretty sure my wife is getting sick of it. It's hard because everytime I'm trying to think of something to listen to they're the first band that comes to mind. So it's been like a constant cycle that ends with: why?

@Bun_Length trust me you are not the only one feeling this way. All of us metalheads are one big brotherhood, and we just lost one of the coolest big brothers in our scene. I love BDM, but don't personally listen to them all the time. Seen them live twice, both times amazing! But it is literally like losing a brother. I've been crying on and off the last couple days, wondering why and how he could leave us. I really think losing his mom is what put him over the edge as far as depression goes. I know when I do finally lose my mom, I'm going to be completely destroyed. R.I.P. Trevor. This one is extremely difficult.

Touring is kinda like camping forever" which made me laugh and he even said it in the video too lol. favorite band, favorite vocalist, glad they're so successful now cause they def. deserve it.

Trevor really nailed it near the end. So many TBDM shows I went to where the band would come up to my friends and I, shake our hands, thank us for coming out. I remember going out for weekend festivals and running into the band downtown at bars, them seeing us wearing their merch and knowing we were there for the fest and having a drink with us. Truly incredible, one of my favourite bands to see live ever, and I'm really going to miss that.

RIP to one of the coolest metal musicians ive ever met. One of my greatest memories is Trevor coming out to the bar after a show at Tremont in cut-off jogging pants and flipflops. Asked him if he wanted a drink and he chose tall boy PBR in a can. Talked for a bit and was the most down to earth guy you would ever meet. He looks at me kinda wild eyed and says "hey man wanna start a circle pit at the bar?" So with Slayer Ghost of War blasting over the bar speakers we started a mosh pit right there at the bar lol... one of the coolest moments ive had and i was star struck. Truly a pioneer and legend of metal this is a tragic loss to the metal community.

I’m almost 30 and I’ve been a metal fan since I was about 14, I’ve heard about a lot of iconic metal musicians deaths in that time and I’ve never felt much more than an “ah damn, that sucks. I’ll listen to *insert best album here* tonight. Trevor’s death is the only one so far that’s really fuckin hurt me. Never met the guy, but he has always come off as such a genuinely nice guy. First album of theirs I heard was nocturnal, and initially I didn’t like it because I was that “true metal only” kid and TBDM were “false metalcore posers”. My best friend got super into nocturnal a little while later and since he had a drivers license, that’s what I listened to on the way to vocational school in high school. Every morning we’d smoke weed, drive out to Wendy’s and get those lil chicken breakfast sandwiches they used to serve back in the day, and go dick around for the first half of the school day with radio equipment. That album grew on me and I ended up having to do what almost every “true metal only” guy ended up doing with TBDM eventually and eating my own words and admitting black dahlia is a good ass band and aren’t “false metal”. I dunno why but hearing about trevor’s death has just been heartbreaking. His music had such an impact on a young me and I dunno... it just hurts. This whole world is just so fuckin dark and cruel and awful.

What a truly excellent interview! Trevor is just one of the nicest and most down Earth dudes in music. Seriously, I met him about two or three years ago when I was covering a TBDM show in Brooklyn and he just loves Talking and meeting the fans and taking pics with them. The fact that he fronts one of the very best death metal (or melo-death bands, whatever you want to refer to them as) in the world only makes him that much more awesome.

I’m 38. All I listened to from 15 to 29 was metal. Since then I’ve branched out. Lately I’ve been revisiting all the metal albums that influenced me years ago. TBDM was the top of the list. I’ve been outta the loop and I’m devastated to learn about Trevor’s death tonight. Two days ago at work I was telling a coworker that they were the all around most fun band to see live, and I loved the fact that their front man’s vocals were brutal as fuck…yet he didn’t take himself too seriously. Damn.

You know, I had heard of Black Dahlia Murder through being a big fan of Machine Head but I had never played their music. Now I feel kind of ashamed that I've only just played their stuff because I read that he'd died... but what an amazing band and singer. I've been hammering their full catalogue non stop all week and it's all great - even watched so much of their KZfaq content. It's so strange having the awe and excitement of discovering a fresh band but also the shock and sadness of him having passed away. It's really strange. Truly a tragic loss.

Hell yea! Trevor is my favorite vocalist of all time. Such a unique sound. I remember when I first heard funeral thirst, I only got to hear it just before miasma came out so I was like 13 years old and they were my first like really heavy band. Before that it was all pantera or iron maiden or metallica kinda stuff. I've been listening to Miasma and Nocturnal since they came out over and over and over and I never get tired of them, such epic shit. I don't know if he does or not but it seems like TBDM don't get enough credit for how they can make such disgusting ideas sound beautiful with the way they write the lyrics, Trevor is just a step above when it comes to the way he can write song lyrics. How he can make digging up a corpse or defiling the innocent sound so beautiful in a way.

20 years I've listened to this band and it will never be the same, thank you for inspiring me not only as a vocalist but as a writer and a human being. I will never forget hanging with the band outside of whiskey dicks in Tahoe and just shooting the shit with papa trev and Ryan knight, Rest easy Trevor. You are TRULY and deeply missed by us all

Haha! My band sometimes rehearses with strobes and other lights going just to get use to it before a live performance. Though... we don't play nearly as often as I'd like these days. After our full length album is done, that should all change. Fucking love Trevor. Coolest dude ever.

I shook Trevor's hand, shared a drink with him and got a picture at the Corner Hotel gig in Richmond, VIC earlier this year, it was so weird to see him just fucking about in the crowd haha, he's so down to earth it isn't funny
