In Revolver's video series "Rise Above," artists open up about the personal and creative adversity they've faced and reveal how they turn such struggles into art. In episode three, Black Label Society leader Zakk Wylde discusses how hard drinking almost took his life and how he found sobriety. See him recount the "animal house" years touring with Ozzy Osbourne and the pivotal moment when his health went downhill and his doctor told him he would die if he didn't make a radical change in his lifestyle - an experience that led the singer/guitarist to abide by a key piece of Ozzy wisdom and find the inner strength to stop drinking.

Zakk is one of the main reasons why I'm sober now. My other reason was that I wanted to get sober. I had begun experimenting with staying sober by going certain periods of time before I cracked and fell off the wagon. I'd go a few days, fall, then a week, fall, then a couple of weeks, fall, then a few weeks, fall. Sometimes, I would fall back to every few days, then a week again, and then a couple of weeks, and then a few weeks again. At the end, I had 4 beers left from an 8 pack after a weekend of drinking (turned into three beers since i lost one in a cab ride home), and i said to myself, "After work tonight, I'm going to have one. Tomorrow night, I'm going to put down the last two, and that's going to be the end." That second night, I put down my last two, and I said to myself, "That's it. I'm done. The bar is closed. " I finished the last of my two beers on June 9th, 12:30 a.m., 2021. I haven't touched alcohol ever since. I thank Zakk for giving me the incentive to give it another try. I thought if he could do it, then so can I.

I was never an alcoholic, but I grew up around them. It wrecks your life. I may have partied too hard at times, but I never felt like I had to have it or I couldn't function or anything like that. My hats off and total respect to those of you that quit. I imagine that it was quite hard to do for some of you. You're life is better for it. There are people that love you and depend on you. Do it for them. They need you.

Rain Dirt Rehabs were created for one thing. To make money. Just like a lot of medical facilities, the main goal is the bottom dollar. Rehabs are the enemy of sobriety. They make you think you have an imaginary disease and that it’s not your fault that you can’t quit drinking or drugs or whatever. It’s the disease, it’s not your fault. That’s how they remove personal responsibility. Once that is removed, they have assured a repeat customer.

I'm a wine and beer aficionado. I do know a ton about it, I don't go heavy on the sauce but drink affects everyone. I would scrap all of it in a second for being there for other people, the woman and the little family I love. I've realized alcohol is generally bullshit, the people selling it to you are not your friends but are using you in a game of Russian Roulette with the barrel pointed at YOU every single round. You are a transaction to them, same as a slab of meat on the coroner's table. You're nothing to anybody but yourself and the man you're willing to be for others.

My whole life I've looked up to Randy, Dimebag, Zakk, and the goat Ozzy . Last month I lost my best friend and cousin to a lifelong battle with anything she could get her hands on. She lost both of her children. I couldn't do anything for her. I seemed to be enabling her. I hope her story as well as the other stories shared here will help you keep strong. Our angels are gone, but *we* have a choice for the ones that love us, if not for the simple fact, LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL. WE don't need to run, escape, have false courage. When our loved ones have an addiction, so do we. Love and positive energy! I pray for Zakk and Ozzy both right now.

going on 8 years of total sobriety all on my own. AA just made me wanna drink so doing it my way when I was ready is what stuck. This is not about time for me but a permanent lifestyle change and I'm happier than I've ever been. No regrets, if you drink have fun and be careful cause it will sneak up on ya when you're having too much fun. Zakk is right, and I found out the same thing, you have to want it. Here's to life,love and music...Cheers!!!

When I was 42, the docs gave me 3-5 years left on my liver. I drank for another 7 months, and got sober, thankfully. 12 years sober now, my life is 100% better. I my health had not turned horrible, and wanted to not be sick, every moment- I'd be dead. Nothing wrong with putting down the bottle, and kicking ass. But, you gotta want it...much love Zakk. 🤘🐵

It can be done but it would of been a lot easier if I had gone to rehab rather than learn the skills on my own. It’s more to it than just say no. It’s strong support and a strong will to survive this life on life’s terms. 100% necessary. This person did the work and should be able to be proud of themselves. Religion robs people of a very basic human need to feel raw pride in their accomplishments. Nothing has EVER happened by the grace of an imaginary sky man.

A good message for the masses. I figured it out at 33 and haven't drunk since, but I really was finally willing to change. I can handle one day at a time, sometimes by the hour, but it works. Looking back over the last 37 years of sobriety, I haven't missed anything and have had some of the best times ever. @joemama1151
@joemama1151 5 жыл бұрын
@@michaelstephen819 You're the only one so far that doesn't agree. I have to assume you're an addict yourself. You need to call it a disease to justify what you do to yourself. I call it poor self control. A strong willed person can control anything anytime. The part you call a disease just makes you want it. It doesn't force anyone to do it. Theres no disease that forces your head down to a table to sniff up a bunch of powder or cook it up a stab yourself with a needle. You need to be a strong willed person to not give in to the urge. Thats why addicts are weak people. You can't control things like cancer or MS. Those are diseases strong willed people can't control. A good person can control what they do with their money or in a lot of cases someone elses money. Thats my point. Like Zakk says be a fucking man and do what you need to do and stop with the excuses.
