Great comparison video! I just recently bought the Revv G3 and tried what you did, front of amp and in the effects loop. Now I'm using a Marshall MG100 DFX 1x12 amp and I found out that the Revv G3 sounds better going in the front of the amp, than the effects loop return. To me, the effects return sounds like you say, "blankets put on the speaker", where in the front it sounds more open and crisp. I think the amp has a lot to do with the sound. But I will still do more experimenting, so thanks for the video!

I LOVE my RevvG3 pedal. I own a '03 Mesa Dual Rectifier, but with this pedal plugged into the Return of my effects loop in the Vintage setting of either channel I've replaced my main tone with this pedal. I get this great sounding hybrid sound of the American Mesa tone with the British Marshall tone of the JCM 800 this way. I couldn't help but laugh when you reviewed it going straight in, because I had the same experience when I first got it out of the box. I instantly thought, "Oh God did I make a mistake buying this?" but you have to treat this pedal as a preamp as you said. Great video as always! (Nice riffage with "Through the Never" by the way ;)

It was cool knowing it wasn’t gonna work in front of the amp before ya did it. Your reaction was great. Lol. (I have both of them). I like them in the loop. Never tried them right into an IR. Great Demo. I will have to give the direct to IR a try. PS. You playing Mr. Big- My Kinda Woman awesome. I love that riff/song.

I have Revv (G2/G2/G3/G4) and Friedman (BE-OD Deluxe, 2 Dirty Shirleys; i want a Twin Sister/Dirty Shirley Deluxe) pedals. Both sound killer into my Two Notes Cab M+. This video shows a lot of great findings when using these pedals into various options. Thanks!

At one time, I wanted to get a BE-OD pedal and a RevvG3. You did the best demo/comparison video I have seen for these pedals. BE-OD would probably be better for my tastes. But I am totally happy with the distortion channels in my Boss Katana right now. I have been using the "brown" channel for rhythm, and the "lead" channel for solos. The clean channel is a nice Roland Jazz Chorus 120 clean sound. I am currently in the market for a nice ambient reverb pedal. I like the Neunaber Immerse MkII the best. ( Strymon Big Sky is just too much for me. )

I’ve been interested in these pedals for a while now, and I think the Friedman would be more my thing. Hopefully able to achieve some of the Marshall “clank” at a more manageable volume. Also I remember the G20 review and I think it’s awesome that Revv reached out to you and appreciated your honesty that it just wasn’t for you. Everything is awesome at least in most KZfaq review videos but I appreciate the few that will say hey I’m sure this would be a great product for someone, but it’s just not for me. Obviously Revv makes nice things and I’m sure they have something to suit everyone’s taste. I’m no where nearly as talented as Euge but I like the same type of tones as he does leaning towards a brighter tone but not harsh on the high end, and I haven’t quite figured it out yet but chances are if Euge likes it I would too. I want to try an Iridium also. Anyway thanks for the honest opinions and reviews.

I’m a Revv guy and have Be-do and G3 too. I’m still using D20 for my pedal platform. G3 into D20 have a great tone for me just like Shawn Tubbs’s demo, you can check out my video. However I have a same result like the video said. G3 have more “ compression “ than Friedman, that have a open sound for me. I’m a 80s guy so I like Friedman more. FYI cheers! Btw great demo as always.

Hi Euge, loved this video and because of such a great video and thorough review I went and bought the G4. I am needing some help though. I have the JCM900 TSL100 and I am using both FX loops. I don't like the crunch/lead channels at all so I have plugged my G4 into the return of the crunch/lead to bypass the pre-amp which works fine however after doing my clean channel no longer has any signal. How can I bypass the pre-amp on the crunch/lead channel yet still use my clean channel and FX loop? Do I need to split my guitar signal so I run one into the G4 pedal and the other into the front of my amp so the clean channel still sees a signal? Thank you and great video!!

I have hbe pedal and the g3. Wanted the g4. G3 sounds awesome in the return. Hbe sounded great through my jsx clean channel through a 412 speaker cab. Didn't need an OD

Excellent demo! I wish you could have access to the friedman dirty shirley. There's not much quality demos of that pedal but it seems a good option for those who need something like the BE OD but with more control in gain and mids (less scooped). That G3 sounds sick as a preamp tho

I have the BE-OD and the G4. The BE-OD for me is more like an 80s sound, transforms any clean amp into a Marshall. The G4 seems a bit more modern but still full, maybe a bit more like a Dual Rec or 5150?. I didn't like the G3 as much. Tried an MXR 5150 pedal but found that too fizzy, couldn't get a good sound no matter how I dialed it. I generally use them into the return bypassing the preamp. Another great video, keep em coming. Like I said on Facebook - best tone of all the KZfaqrs right here. Edit: if you get a chance try a Wampler Catapulp, it's like an Orange in a box.

I usually put Tube Screamer in front of G4 or G3, and REVV in front of amps preamp. REVVs gain some where in 9 o'clock and TS level and tone around 12 o,clock gain zero ( settings differs ). It will sound great. Plain REVV pedal without tubescreamer is bit too boomy. Both pedals have insane amount of gain.

I was sure for REVV G3 that would sound killer direct on Cab sim. Its like buying the real preamp on a budget! i Guess the Friedman would sound also killer boosted with SD-1 in that case. Thank you so much for this review. It really helps for people that cant afford to get a Head amp. Not many reviewers do preamp pedals tests direct to CAB sims or IR Loaders.

Great video thanks. I have a G3 on the way. If I run it through the fx return can I run my delays and modulation and eq in line behind it? Sorry if thats a stupid question I just can’t seem to find an answer to that and I don’t feel like blowing up my amp trying silly things. Cool guitar by the way, I really like it.

Thanks! Sure 👌. Since the amp’s power amp handles the output from the amp’s preamp it will handle output from a few pedals 🤟.

The Friedman has an internal trim pot, you can adjust the amount of gain by taking the back off and adjusting the knob inside. This may account for the tonal difference. I didn't catch on the video whether this trim pot was mentioned.

What would happen if you had the Revv pedals into the effects loop, but then still ran your guitar through the clean preamp of your Marshall? This way you could still have something like the Revv Tilt in front of the Marshall, and still have the G3 and G4 in the effects loop. Would that work?

@@EugeValovirta230V I think I can trust your opinion. I have never seen you develop a bad tone. The G3 was kind of disappointing here in front of the amp. I use it into a Fender style preamp modeler, but not as bad as it did for you. It does indeed sound a little muffled compared to my G4, but there is something about it when jamming or in a mix that it cuts through very well. You should give the Northern Mauler a try.

I kinda counted the G3 out because it felt super weird and sounded weird through the front of the amp. Like you, I found the G4 seemed the work better through the front. Moral of the story, watch an Euge video before screwing around with gear :D
