How tight should those T-50 bolts be torqued down to ?
@MotorMaintenance4 жыл бұрын
According to the 1995 service manual the bolts should be torqued to 41 N⋅m (30 Ft-lbs). Great question thank you for asking!

Thank you! My TJ has a twist in the seat belt, and without knowing what I was doing, I tried to open it up and exploded the spring. I thought it was a gonner, but watching you replace it gave me the confidence I need to get everything put back together. Maybe I'll put a TV show on and get winding.

Watched a few other videos. Like this one. Things to try. See if belt retracts when pulling out from the coil mechanism. If it works, then wash the belt and d ring that belt travels through. Next step, I like the baby powder idea on the belt. Then remove screws from the do not remove cover, and tighten the spring, turning counter clockwise while NOT removing the cover. If it doesn't pull out, the problem is on the other side cover, opposite of the do not remove cover. The lever inside may be stuck, or the belt was pulled out too far, and is stuck. Push back with screw driver. Good luck.

@@MotorMaintenance The least I can do to thank you is tell you this story: 1973 de Tomaso Pantera, 8,800 miles, absolutely pristine original condition! The belt would not move either way; took the system apart it was pristine inside accept for the exploded spring. Tried everything to understand the design, manuals, Pantera sites, had almost given up but did not want to replace that original retractor as it was in PERFECT original condition and a beautiful design. Then I found your video!! Your style and editing kept my interest until I got to the exploded spring sequence!! TOO FUNNY! Understanding the recoil direction, reverse winding of the spring into the cover, winding the belt back all the way, and preloading the spring by turning the cover, worked perfectly!! Now my Pantera is back to original mint condition. Thank you Sir!

I did this it helped soften the belt up alot but it was still not quite enough .Now I let the belt dry thoroughly and i came up with an idea .I got some baby power .I rub it on the belt from the top to bottom and rub it fairly well left some extra power on the belt and retracted it up and down so the extra power could saturate it inside the mechanism a little also .I pulled the belt up and down many times and then the belt started fully retracting once again .I tested it the next day and it worked fine still .the powder is not effected by the heat or cold which is good and it helps the belt stay slick as it allows the belt fabric to slide with much less friction which is the key enemy .Now the day will come when the spring that retracts it will lose its return tension altogether but thats down the road a long ways I hope. I vacuumed up the power and I was done .

Very helpful. I need to do this fix for Dream Girl's 02 Taurus. I would only suggest soaking the belt in soapy water (use Dawn), wring it out , and let it dry before getting into the mechanical portion of the fix. Many people will have tried cleaning as a first fix but if one hasn't, do it while it's off the vehicle...

I did the do not remove and was dumb enough to do it in front of my wife which I will never hear the end of. Any ways do I rewind belt on spool prior to putting spring back on or half way or all the way out????????
@MotorMaintenance5 жыл бұрын
First, I feel your pain at least yours wasn't on video! Second, it will not matter if it is wound up, as you add tension to the spring (by rotating the "do not remove" cover) the seat belt should wind back up. so you can do it full spooled half spooled or unspooled, by the end though it should be fully wound.
@WeMe83 Жыл бұрын
Would that cause problems with insurance because it’s pretty much a modified seatbelt since you drilled the rivet out.

How much should I rewind it? is 3 times enough? literally spun it about 10 times and it makes just a tiny difference in retraction
