Priority of secrecy is high and a chemist (like myself amongst other things) will tell you that reverse-engineering something as Chobham is quite a difficult task unlike other military secrets. One needs to take a sizable piece of something unitary, ultraheavy and indestructible. Modern "Mithril" is not easy to steal. Only friendly fire accidents have crippled Chobham/Dorchester tanks that the military would not just scuttle but RECAPTURE AT ANY COST. History of the armor in warfare and the probability of capture or espionage clearly shows a high probability that the secret is still safe. It's easy to employ superlative quality counterintelligence through a snowstorm of eyewashes since the armor's physical and chemical composition cannot be verified without an intact sample. It's one of those probability events rare in existence that leverage the armor's secrecy. And it's not a US thing to steal, the secret is the property of UK. It was probably given under the condition that the US does everything in its power to protect that secret. Wouldn't you keep your word if it is given at any cost or is it different for governments? I think this is ridiculous. We should have existing M1 Abrams from other countries sent to Ukraine and take our sweet ass time replacing those tanks with whatever. US export version of M1 tanks don’t have the depleted uranium armour. US will custom build M1s for Ukraine, new tanks. Leopards will arrive in a few weeks. M1s I would expect in 3-6 months.

In the meantime, Morocco is sending 173 T-72 tanks that can bolster Ukraine's forces. Also, if Biden wants these things to go more swiftly, he can get Ukraine to say that they are OK with the DU, and the Office of the President can tell the Department of Energy to set aside their strictures in this instance. The only real danger with this stuff is if the tank gets hit hard. Given the quality of their armor, they tend not to get so badly damaged. During transport the depleted uranium is safely enveloped in the alloy of which it is a part. The real worry is the penetrators. Tungsten darts will flatten and/or shatter when hitting and armored vehicle. The depleted Uranium dart actually sharpens as it penetrates. The friction of the dart going into and through the armor causes the uranium to erode against the metal armor. This sharpening improves penetration and the friction causes the dart to catch fire. And I should mention that this is not fissile weapons grade uranium. That would be unstable isotopes like U235 or Plutonium. This is ordinary run-of-the-mill U238, You can't make a bomb with it. And the depleted part means it is no longer radioactive enough to boil water into commercial strength steam. It IS radioactive, but it is not dangerous for short exposure. If the DoE wants to wring its hands, they can send dosimeters and geiger counter type sensors to Ukraine. *Remember this: the number of Ukrainians saved by these tanks will far outnumber a the deaths from the depleted Uranium.* These people suvived Chernobyl; they can manage this.

You know, Ukrainians tank Crews have been in and on battlefronts for over 8 years now. No American tank Crew can teach them ANYTHING about battles only how to operate the maschine properly. Ergo, 3 weeks max. should do.

I had from an American pal that Ukrainian tank crew have already being trained on how to operate the western tanks for 4 months and are already to use them any time from now and some tanks are already in Ukraine and neighbouring countries and they are trying to sort out the logistics to deliver them on the east of ukraine.also Ukrainian pilots are training on west fighters jets and soon they will finish the training and the jets are already being modified to be used in Ukraine they will be delivered as soon as possible.

Why were some of these tanks not prepared 6 months ago? ( Surely they knew what would happen, and ukraine would eventually need tanks to finish the job. the weakest links on all tracked vehicles are the tracks themselves, the body may survive a direct hit but the tank tracks wont, on the battlefield off road they are down to 30mph or less, no hiding place from the drones whose targets will be the tank tracks

If the replacement armor material comes from China than that can be problematic. If I was China, I would not sell it to the USA. It’s funny now that this can take up to a year before Ukraine will get US tanks. The war maybe over by then abs Ukraine would had lost. There are hundreds of Abrams tanks in Europe. Egypt has 1100 Abrams tanks. They are not a security risk for classified information. So they should just send ukraine 🇺🇦 the tanks. Uranium rounds have always been used against tanks. I do know that uranium in radio active and could be dangerous to ukraine.

I can’t wait to see videos of Western tanks destroying Russians ones. Iraq War 2, Saddam’s best tanks were the latest Russian ones at the time, total tanks 6000. The US destroyed about 3000 tanks, lost 11 M1s (7 to friendly fire). Russia lost upwards of over 2000 tanks in Ukraine.

Why not do a transfer with another country send 30+ to Poland and get replenish from the US.

Just to give you guys some context, the M1A2 variant that has DU is lighter and classified. There are only two countries that have those tanks outside of The United States. Also it is more important for Ukraine to get the Leopard 2 tanks over the Abrams. Abrams uses up 2x more fuel than the Leopard 2. The Abrams is Less capable of traversing terrain than the Leopard 2. Leopard 2 tanks will be possibly delivered as early as March as part of the agreement that Ukraine completes a 4 month training course.
