Rex Harrison in "BBC Play of the Month" Platonov (TV Episode 1971). A good example of Chekhov's cheerful skewering of the upper and bourgeois classes with wit, edge and humor.
Rex Harrison plays Platonov, an intellectual, teacher and sharp tongued ex-soldier who seems to have women throwing themselves at him left and right.

I had such a crush on Rex when I was younger, mainly from his character as the Captain in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.

I lived through the '50s, '60s, '70s, and '80s without air conditioning, but to live without it now is anathema. And to think Platonov and his peers all dressed in heavy clothes, and the women all had to wear corsets and girdles, it must have been hell. . But I'll tell you one thing as I watched this play... I liked what I saw in my mind's eye so much more, when I read it, than what I saw here.

Great farce, alot of fun, terrific cast. The dresses the Russian women wore in that era, as seen in this play, wow! There's just something about them.

Never understood why upper classes were/are always mocked.. As if anyone truly wants to be part of a struggling worker/servant class if they don't have to be

Yes. We really didn't appreciate that great generation of actors such as him who are passing away . The current crop with limited theatrical experience and lack of technique will never replace them !!

PlaTOnov pronunciation annoying. I believe it's PLAT on ov with the emphasis on the first syllable.

They pronounce it the right way in the play. In Russian this last name is pronounced as PlaTOnov.

The acting was outstanding and everyone was cast to perfection, but the trivial and shallow characters and storyline brought little satisfaction to the overall experience. No one had my empathy.
