Did you like it??😂. I found Rex about 11 months ago, from Best Friend. Then I heard Sunflower and recognized it from TikTok (yes I know not the best place to discover an artist) and I thought “that sounds like that one guy, Rex Orange County” so I listened to another song, which was Pluto Projector, and I was hooked. Love him to death now, and I wish I could have gotten to listen to Apricot Princess and Bcos you’ll never be free when they dropped. I very much envy you people. I think that it’s cool seeing these comments that are frozen in time, and I wish I could have felt the excitement like you once did…

there's this guy that i really liked, we were together for a couple of months until he decided to end it without any reason. he lifted me up during my downs but i feel like i didn't help him up like what he did for me. and every time i think about it, i feel like i gave him enough reasons to end things me. so i never hated him, i hated myself more for not giving out the same energy he was giving to me. and this song made me realize everything i did wrong in that relationship even if he doesn't tell me. so to the guy who taught me so many things in that short time, i hope you're happier now. i never wished to hold you down and I'm sorry for loving you blindly too much.

This record is insane. Minus the such insightful lyrics filled with raw emotion, the video tells such a deep story. My take: He starts with a girl he's getting to know and having fun with. Probably dating. Falling hard. The usual. The girl pushes him into the "deep end" of the pool, and he's the only one stuck in the deep end with no way of getting out. The girl obviously didn't jump in with him, signifying that the relationship ended. Eventually he gets out of the water and drives back all the way to square one, thinking and reminiscing on all the things that could've been and what went wrong, should he hate himself? What more could he have done? We've all been there. Eventually he makes his way back to his old self who never took the chance and sits and looks at himself thinking if he should've taken the chance as well. It's fucking sad man. I feel this a hundred percent.

Everyone's talking about the significance of being pushed into the pool but nobody is talking about what the pool is and why he swims in it. Essentially, he's swimming in his own pool of self-hatred and regret, hence how he returns to see the version of himself that is considering taking the chance, and this all means that basically, the man was making sweet music with this girl, and then she gave him a shove; his own thoughts became his worst enemy, and his realizing this only makes him more upset with himself. After leaving the pool he's thinking about what he could've done better, and then he sits down at a diner's table, wondering if he ever should've taken the chance.

The ending resonates with me so well. There was a time, post breakup, where I knew that if I tried to pursue my ex again she would reject me. Maybe Alex has been in my shoes and knows the final outcome, him being alone, is inevitable. The end result is the same for him, whether he tried or not. Perhaps that is what he is illustrating.
