A bike ride in Reykjavik, Iceland along two pedestrianized streets. Laugavegur (main shopping street) and Skólavörðustígur (rainbow street) in late September 2021.
The City of Reykjavik is both walkable and bike friendly and has done an excellent job on placemaking. In addition to pedestrianized streets there are raised cycle tracks which will be shown in another video. Outside of the core, there are extensive paved multi-use paths for both walking and biking (see links below).
Approximately 450 meters of Laugavegur has been closed to cars year-round, except for delivery vehicles in the morning and cross streets still allow cars which must yield to pedestrians, scooters and cyclists on Laugavegur. The street design includes flower pots, bollards, seating, signage and painted street murals. Riding along Laugavegur you will see painted murals both on the street surface and on the buildings. Examples of the road murals include a race track and a giant hopscotch. The article linked below explains the planned phases including adding automatic bollards in the future. Roughly 100 meters of Skólavörðustígur (rainbow street) have also been pedestrianized with picnic tables, flower pots, seating, and lots of room to walk, scooter, and bike.
The rainbow street was first painted and closed to cars for the Reykjavik Pride celebration. Residents were even invited to participate in the painting of the street. In 2019 the City of Reykjavik permanently closed the street to cars. This is a must visit street with restaurants, cafes, retail, picnic tables and flowers along with a nice view of the iconic church known as Hallgrimskirkja in the background.
