On some of our pocket-style lights, we've noticed that the brightness when the device is plugged in is capped at something like 70% (probably to not draw too much power when charging and illuminating). Do any of the lights you mentioned here exhibit that same behavior?
@FellowFilmmaker
@FellowFilmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Great point, never even thought to test that! So I just did test them all and the only one that limits is the Aputure MC (limited to 60%) all the rest do full power when plugged in. THanks for pointing this out, had no idea!
@OppositeOpinion
@OppositeOpinion Жыл бұрын
This limitation is due to overheating (charging heat sums with working leds heat)

It’s tough to go wrong with any of these lights- there are so many great options out there. As of this week, all 13 lights in my studio are dedicated video lights- that means so flicker or funkiness at any frame rates or settings ever! Lights are always worth the investment. Also, this thumbnail is on point.

Great job...love the video as it is relevant, detailed and entertaining. In particular, really liked the four-quadrant comparison with the Bokeh in the background...as well as the b-roll at the end video which is fun. Most of all Heather, appreciate the work you are doing and the tortured effort it takes to create this level of quality. Keep going and growing !

Why I prefer the Godox R1: I prefer the smaller, round form-factor. The biggest plus is the lightformer kit godox ak-r1 (honeycomb, barndoors, snoot, soft dome) with magnetic mount. This is an acessoire I use all the time. I really wish, Aputure had this.

I had been curious about the Godox R1. I found a steal of a deal on BH photo for an M1 for about 80USD plus tax. I'd been looking for a comparison video between MC and M1 before I pulled the trigger, but $40 off is $40 off!! I have 5 Aputure MCs and love them, my M1 just arrived and haven't had anytime to play with it, but I do like the sound/music reactiveness as well as the variety of effects and the ability to tweak them on the device. I did not know that there's going to be an app for the lights (hopefully there is/will be one for M1) Thanks for the great work! looking forward to more videos

I missed the custom mode of the app a little bit, were you can custom make the effect that you want with a timeline. But further, really great video and I am happy that you preferred the Aputure MC. Awesome video! Thank you for "sweating the details" for us! Love you spot-on information, but also since it was fun to watch and entertaining! I have a birthday in May and I will be insisting my kids chip in with their mom and get me the Aperture RGB light you recommended! And I promise to insist they buy it through your link you've earned it ! Just a side note- would you ever consider more light on you in your videos? You looked great lighting-wise on that one yesterday you said you just slapped together - funny how that works! You have such a magnetic and contagious enthusiasm for your craft with AMAZING skill sets for public speaking I think I'd listen to any podcast you do just from your cool speaking voice! But I think the shadows over one half of your face just doesn't match up with the upbeat and positive vibe you put out for us to keep our morale up (thank you!) Maybe do an outdoor video? Show us some sets where you've done some client work in your city and what you like about the backdrop etc.? Love the product reviews but we'd all love to find out more about you, your craft, who you hang with work-wise on your shots, etc. no matter how small your projects! "Come out into the light" your are so cool you have nothing to hide- we are your biggest fans , again, mostly because of you, but also because you are one of OUR biggest fans (again thank you!! ) Just some ramblings from an old guy with a daughter your age who wants you to know you are making a difference!

I might test your feedback, so thanks! ( I really appreciate kind and considerate feedback, so thanks for saying it the way you did) I appreciate the ramblings as well, so do so any time! Wow that's CRAZY that your communications /public speaking skills were one of those God given gifts just under the surface - you would think you had been honing them all of your life! And yes bring on the TED talks- I'm sure you would have something valuable to share but honestly you could read from a phone book (whoops you're probably too young to remember phone books ha ha!) and it would sound interesting! You would do AWESOME doing voiceovers for documentaries (your own or others!). I just "hit the bell for notifications" on your site -1st time for any site for me thanks for sharing your talents with us and for your kind reply!

Good point. Typically it depends on what you do as a filmmaker. I've used them in short films for some of the effects (fire or lighting), I've used them in youtube videos to add a pop of light in hard to reach areas, or even in lamps to make them look lit.

The aputure mc is not as bright as the weeylite rb9, if that was your question.

Do they have a single maximum output color temperature? you know, because the white is "mixed" from LEDs of two temperatures, I wonder if they are only capable of outputting max brightness at a certain CCT?
@FellowFilmmaker
@FellowFilmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
All 'bi-color' lights are that way. I can't recall off the top of my head the specific ones for each, but just figure the number that is the exact middle of the temperature range on each light and it would likely be close to that.

I got the Godox light since I've been using Godox VL lights. I try to stick with one brand when I can, but this was a case where it did not make that much sense. No app or remote can be a pain when on a set, so I probably should have gotten the Aputure light even if it meant I would have multiple remotes. Since the Godox light is compatible with the round head magnetic flash modifiers from Godox it can use the barn doors and grid that comes with the AK-R1 set. Of course, I don't have those flashes or the modifier set yet, so that's not a 'pro' for me. Now I just need to talk my wife into selling her MagMod stuff and getting the Godox round head flashes so I can steal her modifiers for my hair light.

Haha, well I hope you can upgrade when its the right time :D I've been hearing about Magmod a bit lately... is it good?
@christianhotter
@christianhotter 3 жыл бұрын
@@FellowFilmmaker I'm not a big fan of MagMod. Mostly for its price, but also because it does not work well with other photo/video gear that I have. I found this out when I tried to use their small softbox with a video light. I prefer to get gear that can be reconfigured for different purposes. It also adds too much weight on the end of the flash that can make it hard to point your flash at an angle to bounce off of walls. If I could have all the money we spent on MagMod products, Pocket Wizards, and Nikon flashes back, I would get Godox round head flashes and their light modifiers and I'd have money left over to buy a couple more video lights. Oh...one MagMod item I do steal from my wife's bag and use often is the MagShoe. It works great with my small light panels that have hot shoe mounts.

nice presentation. These look really nice for spot effects,... i am looking for a portable light for night shoot portrait and video with a Z6ii. I have already chosen ML60Bi based on your review but when i want more portable, i was looking godox M1, aputure AL-MX, better than MC, and AL-F7. F7 looks fantatstic on aputure tuto but seems quite similar to M1 which looks better than al-mx, more expensive.

Each has its use-case. I like certain ones because they do their colors and effects nicely enough.

Great video, thanks! I'm considering the Weeylite RB9 because of brightness, but another youtube reviewer reported that when running for a long time at high setting, it overheats and shuts off. Can you please test yours at high output extended time and report back?
@FellowFilmmaker
@FellowFilmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
I don't believe it overheats as much as it draws alot faster at higher powers, so it just dies naturally. In my use of it it does get warm at high powers, yes. But I've enjoyed it for what I use it for all the same.

@@FellowFilmmaker thanks! I'm watching another review, and he reports that the Weeylite RB9 forgets what the light is set at, each time it is turned off. This would be quite a hassle when shooting many small studio subjects, as I'd want to turn off the light between setups. Do you know if there is a workaround to this problem, maybe using the app? I'd hope it can be fixed in firmware, but maybe not if it doesn't have a memory chip.
