This is exactly what the EV market needs: choice. I love my Model 3, but I also understand that it’s not for everyone. The more choices people have, the more EVs get on the road - which I think is a huge positive. (Full disclosure: my wife drives a VW ID.4, which she loves.) Great review, all the pros and cons for both vehicles, and all presented factually (other than the Roblox reference!), without hyperbole. Very nicely done!

Your analysis is spot on... I've had my Tesla P3 since 2018, and just bought my Ioniq 5 Limited, as a 2nd car, and love them both... One thing you didn't mention is that I can charge a coffee maker with the Ioniq 5 Limited's energy - the 120 volt plug is below the 2nd row seats... No adapter needed!!! I'm still undecided whether I like the black or white screen better...

A nice and balanced review, man. Well done as usual. I picked up an EV6 First Edition (fully-loaded AWD, matte gray paint) a few weeks ago and think you'd probably like it a bit more than the IONIQ, as it's a bit quicker (0-60 in 4.6), with a bit more range (274 vs. 256), and has a sportier ride. My buddy picked up an IONIQ 5 and it's a beautiful car with a modern design, but the EV6 flat out looks like a spaceship on the road. I've never received so much positive attention for a car before, which makes me a bit uncomfortable to be honest, but I'm glad people enjoy seeing something new on the road. Tesla paved the way for better EVs, so I will always respect the brand.

@ezpoppy55

@ Jose… Your comment about when “prices normalize” (and I assume you mean, go down) intrigued me. Have new car prices ever gone down? Turns out, they have. I found a site that lists the percentage of increase/decrease in new car prices, from 1935 to 2022, 87 years. Of those 87 years, 23 have seen prices go down on new cars. Almost all those reductions have been less than 1% - several were a very small fraction of 1%. 1955 was the biggest drop at around 3.5%. The years right after WW2 were the biggest increases, with 1947 at nearly 50%. In one year! Followed by +9% each year in ‘48 and ‘49. I do hope prices “normalize” and that EVs become more affordable - and abundant. Both new and used. All the best, Jose!

Model Y is 67k also the IONIQ AWD you can switch to Eco mode which will turn the car RWD which is awesome for people who live in Northeast or snowy areas who in summer can get the benefit from RWD range. Also the IONIQ 5 does do 0-60 in 4.9 seconds not sure if ive seen mid 5 second number. Also you can do voice commands for the ventilated seats for example Set seat warmer to 3 Set passenger seat warmer to 2

I guess I'm playing a bit of wait-and-see with these two (and the Kia EV6). I have my Model Y LR on order which arrives in June, and I believe by then there will be enough people living with both the Kia and the Hyundai that we can get some longevity ideas around the battery, interior, etc. If Tesla does open the Supercharger network to other vehicles, it might make the decision to really look at something else (besides the Tesla), as the playing field will be that more level.

As always, entertaining and informative. I especially loved the shout out to #1 GM :) The Ionic is a great looking EV, also like the EV6 and the new one from Subaru. Hard to not go with Tesla however, because in my mind it is the only brand out there right now with a PROVEN track record of battery reliability. I think all of these new entries will be great options after they have been out for a few years. Keeper up the good work!

First the Ioniq 5 for Hyundai's first attempt at EV is quite impressive. I agree with all the points you make regarding these two vehicles. I own the Model Y (LR) and when I ordered it back in Aug. '21, the Ionique 5 or many other new EV's do not exist so I didn't have many choices. If I have to make a choice today I'd still go with the Tesla for all the reasons you mention. I just live it's driving dynamics plus all the techs that are constantly improving with OTA software updates. I added the acceleration boost and it's a rocketship disguised as a family vehicle. It has a ton of space for its size. Basically the Tesla is by no means a perfect vehicle, but it ticks most of the boxes for me. But I can see the Hyundai appeal to many buyers. It's a great EV.

The Ioniq 5 is a car that has manual buttons for a lot of stuff, but not for the most used features in a cold climate, namely the heated seats. You have to press a physical button, then press up on the seat in the screen. Then, after you have done that, you have to press down if you want it on medium. THat is 3 button presses in 3 different locations! . I really, really hated that. And here in Norway, voice controls doesn't work, it costs as much as the Model Y, has a lot less cargo space, no frunk, the warranty is pretty much the same, services costs a lot more on the Hyundai and the maps are the worst ones I have seen in a car the last 12 years (well, Toyota is right up there as well. Try to look around on the map, and it will suddenly change direction, because it thinks the car has changed direction. That is while you are not centered on the car. It also only showed the main roads unless you were zoomed in a lot. If you zoom in a lot you have no idea where you are, if you zoom out you can't see the roads and have no idea where you are. It also couldn't plan a trip with charging. Like at all.... The Hyndai has Android Auto and CarPlay, but only with a cable that has to be connected down near your feet. Without a center console that goes between ,that cable is bound to hook into your right foot at one point. The center console also offers almost no space to store stuff, compared to the Model Y. I did like the open feel though, even if it was made it feel like a van. The shader for the sun roof is also fantastic, and the seats are really, really good. They even have leg support. Never seen that in a car before. Had the Hyundai been at least 12 500 dollars cheaper than the Model Y here, then I could probably have lived with all the things that was nagging me. Then again, the ID4 has the same tax grant in the US? It pretty much does everything the ioniq 5 does, just better (except seats) and is more comfortable than both (still, cargo space is limited here as well)

Cargo space, being able to plan routes with charging, having a functional map, not having 1 physical button and 2 different places to press on the touch screen for heated seats, frunk, more space in the cabin (the open van solution takes away pretty much all of that in the Ioniq 5) as well as not having to press so god damn many times on the screen for every little thing and being able to see my speed without moving my whole body or taking of my sunglasses, is what made me choose the Model Y. Given that the Ioniq 5 has a longer delivery date and the same price (here at least) for the same trim, then it wasn't hard to choose. The Ioniq 5 has many positive sides though. Also, the unique look is a great selling point (though they are everywhere here. Been one of the most sold cars the past months)

For those that do road trips, have to say autopilot (even the standard included and not FSD) on the Tesla is a game changer in addition to the super charging network. While you still need to pay attention, it steers and maintains a safe following distance. Allows you to take more of the scenery in and arrive less fatigued. Only downside is on undivided hwys you’re limits to only 5 mph over the speed limit.

Gjeebs - this is just an estimate, but I have recorded the data from over 250 charges of my 2021 Model Y. For each charge, I have recorded the kwh added to the battery pack and percent change in the battery that was reported (by TeslaFi). With these two data points, you could extrapolate what the battery capacity size is. If we look at only the charges that added more than 20 kwh (just over 100 of them) my data suggests that the usable battery pack capacity is approximately 77.7 kwh with a standard deviation of 2.8 kwh.

Nice it gets into the sub $40K w/ rebate. Anyone home charging - you're set. I got my MY long-range last Aug, and opted to rent via Turo a MYP and M3 in Phoenix over the holidays. Tips: - Get a AirBnB, take a pass on the hotel. Charge while you sleep without the feeling of roulette. - Get to a Supercharger early so you get a stall in a metro area. It gets busy mid day or possibly when you need to return the rental. - You can have a 120V mobile charger with a NEMA 14-50 adaptor, but end up needing a NEMA 10-30 .. be prepared. - Chargepoint sounds like a great idea until you realize its 7.2kW, and the hybrid that parks next to you halves your speed while you pay $ fees. I paid $29 for 29 miles of range over 3hrs. Not great. That was 3 happy hours and a sad face. - Download survival tools (ABRP, PlugShare, ChargePoint, EVgo) or scout if local power companies have free charging locations or ones in city centers. - Be prepared to not find 3rd Party EV Chargers. They are hiding sometimes. Glance at photos others post to triangulate where they are.

Now that the Model Y starts at 65K, isn't the Ioniq 5 or EV6 the better option considering they cost 55-57K and have the tax credit, making the car 15K+ less? Unless you do road trips frequently (multiple times a month/week), there are very few reasons to pick the Model Y over the competition since they cost so much now.

These are exactly the two EVs that I was considering back in late 2021. The Ionic 5 simply dropped off the list when I looked into buying one. I live in Cincinnati OH and the local dealers all told me they might be able to sell one in late 2024. Their staff isn't trained and they have no charging setup for customers. If you live on the west or east coast you can buy one but not in the center of US, Chicago maybe being an exception. Even if I was willing to buy it elsewhere, I couldn't get it serviced locally. I ordered the MY in October of 21 and it currently is estimated for May delivery.

I'd go with the the Ioniq 5 on styling alone. Add in the smoother and comfier ride, useful tech (blind view monitor, augmented reality navi, V2L etc.), sunshade in the panoramic sunroof, better fit and finish (don't get me started on durability issues of the new yoke steering wheel and bubbling seats), COOLED SEATS, Head Up Display, having physical buttons to operate basic features (having it in the Tesla screen is dangerous imo), and a much better warranty are all gravy. More than anything, I just think the Tesla model Y looks like a cross between a Pokemon character and some sort of small beluga whale...

You mentioned it didn’t have their logo or name on the steering wheel of the ionic 5. It does. Sort of. There are 4 dots in the center of the steering wheel. That’s Morse Code for “H”. Just a little Easter egg. Good review of both.

The costs are not similar. You can also use voice commands with the I5 to control climate functions including seat warmers. In many ways I like the looks of the Model Y more but the Ioniq 5 is way less expensive and I like the availability of buttons. Granted the Tesla charging network is way better than everything else today. Hopefully that changes rapidly. The one thing you did not mention is charging speeds.

Good review. However, you should mentioned issues having on each vehicle. I am potential Tesla owner so i heard of the issues with workmanship or quality of the paint, the gaps, other issues like phantom breaking, noise in the cabin when driving the highways, not enough light at night in the cabin, no trunk cover, no sun cover, cabin gets hot during the summer due to no sun roof cover, homelink extra, customer service issues and repair and replacement issues that can take weeks to months, etc... Also, i have seen videos of accessories lavailable for tesla, why so much accessories needed to a very expensive car? Not talking about the mats, its like the consul organizers, cup holder inserts, truck covers. Other cars come standard that you don't need those accessories?! Any issues in the Hyundai Ionic? Do they have quality issues too, that buyer has to inspect, take pictures and videos during delivery to check for flaws? Yes, Tesla is on top right now but if they don't deal with the issues, things can change when the competitors catch up with the technologies. Just my thoughts.

It's mainly because of the fact that Tesla is making their cars with a software-centric approach. Tesla is investing their energy and time mostly in improving the technology of the car and less in the car itself. The non-Tesla EV car makers are mostly traditional car makers. In their approach, software is one of the main components of the car, but it's not everything. Because of this focus shift, Tesla is not really bothered much about the quality issues and "actual car features". Unfortunately, the demand is giving them a false feeling that people don't care much about the actual car, they need more software bells & whistles. Unless they wake up and treat the car as a car first - you won't stop seeing those quality issues. So, in a way, it becomes easy for them to displace Tesla from the leadership spot soon.

I have experienced zero fit and finish issues with my 2021 MYLR. However, the AC malfunctioned from the get-go and the wheel alignment was way off. Both were fixed within the first two weeks of ownership. My primary beef with the MY is the ride, which is quite harsh.

I've owned the ioniq 5 for 3 weeks now and didn't realize you can press the square on the handle to unlock (or more importantly lock the car). I thought it might have been a bit of a Tesla Fanboy piece, especially as you own one, but you really did a good job. I think it's important to note that in different countries, the Supercharger network is less important. Where I live 95% of charging is done at home.

That Ioniq 5 really is eye catching. Hopefully Hyundai evolves this design. They have a very nice platform to be able to improve and evolve it. Tesla having more storage in the frunk and under the truck space is nice. I think I prefer the Ioniq interior design and layout. Overall that HI5 is a hit. No disrespect to Tesla, but they are everywhere, they are unremarkable in appearance, and don't ever refresh the cars appearance to give people what they want and eye catching. Very glad that other manufacturers are bringing nice options. Very nice car. Thanks for sharing. I have seen a few HI5's on the road and they have a commanding appearance and appeal on the road. Just wish the HI5 is more efficient. I thought they would bring the secret efficiency sauce over from the original Ioniq, but sadly they didn't.

When you talk about the screen size you need to give us the square inches of the screen and not just the diagonal dimensions. You said that the Tesla screen is a 15" display where the Hyundai is a 12.3", but the Hyundai is only 4" high, where the Tesla is 15" high. I know the Tesla has a much bigger square inch display, but your comment only differentiates them by 2.7". I hope you understand what I'm saying.

So, about the $7500 federal tax credit. How does that work? If an Ionic 5 costs say, $47500 does that mean the car really only costs you $40000? Or does it mean that you can take $7500 off your adjusted gross income the following year? Because the latter scenario would probably only save you less than $1000. Just curious. Nice video by the way…

No, it is on next years taxes and as long as you paid more than $7500 in federal taxes it would reduce your taxes by that $7500 (so you would get that much back if you don't owe taxes when you file).
