My ten favorite Bibles
I considered only complete* Bibles, and I excluded study Bibles from this list.
00:00 Intro
00:20 #10, a 1977 Holman New American Standard Side-Column Reference Bible 00:22
02:18 #9, a facsimile 1599 Geneva Bible 02:19
03:07 #8, the Westminster Reference Bible (KJV) 03:07
04:27 #7, the Cambridge Cameo KJV with Apocrypha (black letter edition) 04:28
05:45 #6, a Nelson New King James Version (NKJV) Wide Margin Bible from the 1980s, 476BG 05:45
07:10 #5, a Concordia Revised Standard Version (RSV) Reference Bible 07:10
08:32 #4, the Oxford Brevier Clarendon Wide Margin (KJV) 08:32
10:16 #3, an American Standard Version (ASV) Bible printed by Prolific Industries 10:15
11:07 #2, the Cambridge Interlinear Bible KJV-RV in black goatskin 11:07
12:33 #1, the Allan 53BR Longprimer (KJV) in brown highland goatskin 12:33
I apologize for overworking the adjectives 'excellent' and 'wonderful' in this video. If you think it's inconsistent for me to exclude study Bibles and include the Geneva Bible on this list, I think you're right.
(For those interested, the aircraft is an F-106 Delta Dart.)
* Meaning 66 or more books.

Thanks for taking the time to show this. I purchased this atlas and find it very helpful in visualizing locations and distances, as well as topography. I have never been to Israel, and this type of resource makes it easier to get a feeling of the country without being there. The articles such as the one on climate are also a nice addition that I don't have access to in any of the maps sections in the Bibles I own.

@@acardnal - I haven't started working on the list yet, but the Didache Bible and the Jerusalem Bible are clearly strong candidates. I doubt I'll consider the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible, however, since it's incomplete. By the way, the Orthodox Study Bible is also a strong candidate -- in fact, if the Old Testament were a more consistent translation of the Septuagint, the binding were sewn, the paper more opaque, the print bolder, and the line spacing more generous, it could rank #1. I hope Nelson redesigns it some day, because it has a lot of potential.

My favourite is the Cambridge KJV Concord Reference. I have four of them! A full Yapp brown calfskin edition, a black goatskin and (you’ll like this) a black calfsplit with black lettering. I also have a 1971 Concord that I love for travelling light because back then it had no dictionary, no translators preface and no concordance so, as a result, it’s very thin.

That Allan's Reference Bible Long Primer with Chain References is almost perfect for me, is there something comprable that includes italics for changes? Thank you!!!
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 3 жыл бұрын
Similar Bibles with italic type include the Cambridge Turquoise, the Schuyler Canterbury, and the large-print edition of the Westminster Reference Bible. The Turquoise is available only in a red letter edition. The Canterbury doesn't include translators' notes and the references are at the bottom of the page. Thomas Nelson has a decent KJV with relatively large print as well, the Maclaren Series KJV Large-Print Verse-by-Verse Reference Bible. It also has page-bottom references. I believe you can find all of these at evangelicalbible.com. (The Westminster is under "Trinitarian Bibles.")

Wonderfully varied selection of bibles. So interesting! I am wondering and would ask (if I may) the interplay and just how you use each of these favored bibles? Do you use them interchangeable for reading, studying and prayer (i.e. different ones for differing times of the week/month/year). . . . or does each serve a selected purpose. . . I ask, in part, because I wonder myself as to how best to use my own varied bible collection and am interested in how others (like yourself) incorporate the many versions of God's word. Thank you.
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting, Philip! I tend to read the NASB mostly when listening to those who preach or teach from it. I consult the Geneva Bible largely for its footnotes or to compare a translation, and I retired the NKJV wide margin a couple of decades ago. I tend to go to the Cameo with Apocrypha (or the New Oxford Annotated Bible RSV, which I excluded from this video) when reading morning or evening prayer. I pick up the Concordia RSV when I'm reading a lengthy section of scripture, since the language and format are so well-suited to synthesis. I primarily use the Oxford KJV wide margin to maintain a record of insights or alternative translations, with the vague idea that some day I'll read it cover to cover and take advantage of those observations. When I use the Allan 53, it's usually for in-depth study, in combination with a more modern translation like the ASV shown in the video. The KJV-RV interlinear serves the same purpose, but with the advantage that I have one less book open on my desktop, and the disadvantage of the small interlinear font. Sometimes I pair up a KJV with an NASB or an ESV, and if I'm in the New Testament, my UBS5 is open nearby.

@@RGrantJones Thanks for taking the time to break it down in such detail. Very meticulous. Glad you have room for an Oxford in your mix. Tim Wildsmith also likes the Allan 53 goatskin. I have been eyeing the 63 that is available on bible direct. It is discounted 20 pounds due to imperfect gilding. Cat Woods is writing out the Bible twice to pass down to her sons. You may be interested in her video, "Updated Flip Through of My Interleaved Journaling Bible." It takes her 2.5 hours to transcribe 1 page. She uses the ESV but I'm wondering if the NKJV Interleaved may be easier on the eyes as it has a larger font. "Walking in the Light Reviews" also has some great Bible reviews in case you were interested.

You would think a premium company would pick up the ASV or RV considering they would corner the market. Those 2 translations are very nice and it would be awesome to have them in high quality. I wish Cambridge, Schuyler or even Humble Lamb would jump on it. Until then I have to settle for the interlinear which is nice, but like you, I am not keen on the print size. I also don't like paragraph form so there's that. I was talking to Star Bible a year ago and they said they had a new ASV in the works. I think I will check in with them and see how it's progressing.

In your opinion as both a student of translations and as an Anglican, which Bible translations do you think would be most appropriate for use in traditional Anglican liturgy/worship? (I'm thinking other than the KJV)

Interesting question! Among modern translations, I'd say that the RSV and the ESV are good candidates, since both are in formal English and both are available with the Apocrypha. I wish I could have listed the NKJV also, but its translators decided to exclude the Apocrypha.

Until it was recently discontinued, I placed the NASB 1995 inexpensive (£15/&20) hardback with many serious students both Christian and other : it is the Bible that I have witnessed as being most avidly and regularly studied, sometimes with the NASB 1995 Topical Bible, also now discontinued. When I was a boy of 11 in 1959 in Scotland and associated with Baptists and Brethren as well as Presbyterians, I learned early of the AV/RV Interlinear. Though the AV was read and preached from, as being the public Bible -"our common version"- the RV text or margin was often recommended for consideration. The larger edition of the Interlinear was a little on the pricey side, though many working-class preachers and teachers saved for and bought it. But, both Cambridge

Finally, in response to demand, Cambridge issued a Bourgeois 8vo edition without references - a beautifully clear read , and very portable (7" x 4.5" x 2") : this was the first (secondhand!) Interlinear edition that I had.

Oxford issued its Interlinear in 1906, but Cambridge had issued its Brevier 8mo Two-Version Edition of the Holy Bible, with centre full references, in 1899. The text was that of the AV, with the RV notes placed in the left and right margins. This was, and is, I think, less-used than the Cambridge Interlinear; but I think that I probably prefer it! As far as. I know, it was issued in only one edition - 8.5" x 5.5" x 2", in hardback.

Good picks. I have the 400th anniversary Allan Longprimer (KJV) in navy blue goatskin with red ribbons. Looks like you are a KJV fan. I am too, but I use the ESV as my primary translation. I grew up on the KJV. I went to a private Christian school that taught us to read using the KJV . . . and it was a staunch KJV-only school. I was in my 20s before I fully accepted that other English translations were okay. But the KJV is the language of the Bible in my head. I wanted a modern version based on the critical texts that still maintained as much of the style of the KJV as possible. I used the NASB for a long time. When the ESV came out, I did a fairly detailed comparison and discovered that the ESV is actually a bit closer to the KJV than the NASB. It uses KJV phrasing more often than the NASB. They are both great, but the ESV became my primary Bible. I still love reading the KJV. It's just not my primary translation.

Thanks for commenting, Arandor! I do like the KJV, and I use it often, but usually alongside a more modern translation. I've never been KJV Only myself. When I was a boy, the Christians I associated with were open to other translations. I remember when my grandparents bought my mother a New English Bible as a present. I haven't studied the question in detail, but I think you're right when you say that the ESV is closer to the KJV than the NASB is. I have a mostly favorable impression of the ESV, but I don't own an ESV that I like as well as any of these 10 Bibles. That said, I'll be surprised if at least one ESV isn't included on my 'Ten Favorite Study Bibles' video.

Thanks for the question, John D. I can say that the KJV Bibles printed recently by Thomas Nelson do not include the "St." before the evangelist's name, but Cambridge still includes it. The 1885 Revised Version continued to use "St." in the gospel titles, but the 1901 American Standard Version dropped it. As far as I know, the RSV never used it. Other than that the red letters bother me, both it and the capitalization I find to be interpretive at times. It could easily change to the ESV Reference Bible which also has red letters (I understand that the RL Allen NCR is larger both in footprint and font size and is all black letters) but since I've not gotten it in my hands I can't say yet. I'll update this comment in a about 2 months time. I also really like the NKJV Large Print Centre Column Reference Bible. Great Review. Those Bibles look fantastic! I personally like the NRSV best for a modern translation. It has modern wording but doesn't entirely eliminate words that other translations feel are completely obsolete, for instance "fornication" and "fornicator" are still used throughout NRSV translations where as other modern translations entirely remove the word from their entire Bible. For instance NIV, NLT, TEV, CSB, ESV (distributed by the Gideon's now) ... and many others now figure the "fornication" word is obsolete too. For a good litmus test of a translation in question, check out 1 CORINTHIANS chapter 6. The chapter is full of fornication references in KJV, ASV, DRA and pretty much all the older translations prior to World War 2 (when the memo went out to not use the word anymore, due to the government's human husbandry campaigns around the world to grow the populations quickly)
