Actually music creates new neuronal pathways & enhanced dopamine, serotonin, GABA & norepinephrine. Keep on jamming. The music & frequency will make u more creative. Depression is just the mind going through the same ole negative thoughts and playing the drama like a movie in your head. Your mind actually wants to play. This is when your mind is in it's most creative state. Look at Mozart, Beethoven l, and famous artists and musicians. They tapped into something special because of their depression. Take advantage of this mental phase. I promise you will discover lots of new licks and knowledge. Praying for u...

Tried guitar in my 40s in the ‘90s but gave up and put my guitar in a case for 18 years. When I retired at 65, my bucket list included learning to play well enough to start a band and play in public. My first gig was in January 2019 when I was 67. I’m 71 now and still gigging and one of my bandmates and I have written a dozen original songs.

I'm 33, and my journey was so standard. At 13, I started playing guitar because I saw Van Halen Live Without a Net on vhs. The summer after 7th grade, I played guitar non-stop and joined a band in 8th grade. Joined another in 9th. Joined another in 10th. I moved a lot in those seminal years, but guitar kept me going in a strong direction, eventually leading to acceptance into Berklee College of Music just in time for the recession in 2008. In lieu of attending Berklee, I joined a solid band (that I believed in) that lasted for nearly 10 years. We didn't make it, but I still play, and I have a good day job. Haven't gigged in years, but that was my favorite part. Playing live is the greatest feeling a musician can enjoy. Sorry if this is too long.

The version of "There's Only One Way to Rock" on that tape you mentioned is still one of my favorite concert openers ever. I'm still salty that we don't have a professionally filmed concert video with Dave but overall that is a great live document of Van Halen and way better than their next live album and DVD.

I just want you to know how profound this video is. 20 years ago I left "the artist" in the trench somewhere. I went to college, and learned how to write software, but I never really made the grade. Now I'm almost 60, and I'm more-or-less re-inventing myself. I purchased an electric guitar, something I'd been planning to do for years. But more importantly, I am returning to fine art and illustration. This is something I was passionate about. I listened to the wrong advice, and left it behind. But never again. Now I'm going to focus on bringing the artist back to life . . . Thanks for your inspiration.

I can relate- there's a part of society that, for whatever reason makes one feel odd about sharing a talent such as art or music as a hobby. You know, read a poem or sing a song you wrote to someone. lol They love to go see "professionals." But you? That's just weird... I always wanted to write a fiction story (crime drama) and just decided to get down to business and do it. Finished it. Now I have 300 copies from a publisher to go out and promote sales etc. I never cared about that part of it, the accomplishment is done for me. Didn't change my life, but it'd have bothered me left undone, I guess. Anyway, do what you love even if others don't care. God made us all creative in some way....society stuffed that down and turned us in to robotic tax payers. Best of luck to you Dan! God bless.

When I was 22 I was in a band that signed a regional deal and had the pleasure of touring the states and playing festivals with bands I could have only dreamed of seeing live, much less sharing a stage with. I remember thinking at the time that this is it, we had made it. We made a few music videos, had our songs on the radio, it was rad. Fast forward 10 years,3 drummers, 2 singers and a drug addiction later and the dream had fully eroded. Now I play in a worship band at my church and while it scratches the playing live itch, I’ll never forget playing in front of 25000 people at my local coliseum or hearing my songs on the radio. Dreams are what you make of them.

I was passionate about guitar and music, but then when I was 16, skateboarding unlocked a level of passion and commitment inside of me that I never knew I was capable of. I have been skating my whole life, it was just at 16 when I realized I loved it so much that I had to get good at it no matter what. It wasn't even a choice. It was just what my soul demanded of me. I had felt that before, when I began playing guitar, but I wasn't able to take a leap of faith like I did with skateboarding. That is, until now. That passion for guitar and music was still there, it was just overshadowed for a while. It took some time for me to find my way back to it. The part that took the longest to regain was the commitment. Life has a way talking you out of following your dreams under the disguise of being an adult. It tells you that you're a grownup now and it's the responsible, mature, adult thing to do. Get a job. I have never in my life had a job that I cared about. It is so hard for me to hold down a "job". I've been fired so many times, but when it comes to music I can concentrate and work for 24 hours straight without a second thought. I believe that's because it's what I'm meant to be doing with my life. I have finally found the courage to admit that music, being an artist, is the only thing I have ever really cared about. That, plus it's the only thing I've ever really been good at, and that includes skateboarding. I loved it, but it never came naturally to me the way making music does, I had to earn it the hard way. It's the same way with guitar. Guitar skills are not the same thing as writing/making music, but I know that if I keep working, keep learning no matter what, I will progress, and I will get better. ✌

Theres a new super viral youtube or social media bleat every day thats a toxic takedown, and those channels either flop because its soul draining to continue or they become a great big hive of scum and villany like Mos Isley, or Florida, and that can make your existence pretty dark. Being cool, thoughtful, and nice actually snowballs up when you put yourself into the atmosphere. Life in general is better for everyone when youre cool, and nice.

I leave my comment the same day this video was uploaded to KZfaq. I’m 43 years old, been playing music for 29 years and guitar for 28 of those years. I still haven’t thrown off my adolescent dream of getting somewhere as a professional musician, even though circumstances keep interfering. My reasons are that I have no other vocation in life and also that I feel as though I’ve got a purpose with the abilities I have found in myself as a musician. It didn’t come from nowhere, and I don’t want it just to go nowhere. As I learned how to play in the 90s, I discovered my aspiration was to try to help reinstate the standards of classic rock in the mainstream, since the time I started learning was at the height of Grunge, right when we lost Kurt Cobain. I was so disappointed going through my teenage years to discover that the standards of musicians predating Nirvana did not return and still haven’t. My hope is that they will and that I will have something to do with it. Classic rock is considered “old hat”, but I believe all the mediums that have taken its place over the last 30 years and counting have already gotten old themselves. I want to be able to turn on the radio (or hear it when I go out) and catch wailing guitar solos like you play again.

The dream is always changing. In 1976, I received my first LP, Fly Like an Eagle by Steve Miller. That was when I decided that I wanted to be a guitar player. I took lessons and played and played. I joined the Army for college money and had everything planned out. I was going to go to school and become a recording engineer. Then came marriage and kids. I realized that I would never make it as a rock star and that the music industry is run by some of the planet's most vile individuals. And besides that, I sucked. In 1996, I was struck by lightning, and that changed everything. I can now play things that I never thought possible. Nowadays I work 50-60 hours a week and spend at least one day a week playing a band. My dream is to have a piece of land and build a cabin. I play for peace of mind and could care less about the music industry. Fortunately, your videos are full of ideas that help me try new things. You are an inspiration to many. Thanks.

My dreams died a gradual death as time went on and age started kicking me square in the ass. I spent my youth listening to the wrong people and getting easily intimidated by people who discouraged me, and I wound up paying a huge price for it. Now, music is just a hobby, and I often times won't play guitar for weeks at a time. I can't go back knowing what I know now, and it's painful to come to that realization. I can only wonder what could've been, and that regret is even more painful. I am basically a cautionary tale for what not to do when facing adversity on the road of life.

(I actually played for 6 months, at age 7 but gave up) My original dream was to be a Concert Classical Guitars, and that's what I studied, even went to music college. But I live in the wrong era for that to be possible, so that ended, and I spent years as a teacher. Over the last decade that too has ended, and now I'm just some old guy who plays guitar for his own enjoyment, and just dreams of being a better Electric guitarist. I'd love to be able to play like Yngwie, but I'm a realist, and know that's never gonna happen. I guess I don't really have "a dream" anymore.

Everyone’s definition of “Dream” is different. And it almost certainly changes with time. I’m going to be 50 soon. In my early years I had “the dream.” Made some headway but never got what my, then, image of “the dream” meant. Like most young musicians, the dream was a record deal and all that came with it. At this point in my life the dream is writing, creating and playing for myself. Recorded a lot of material in the studio with some great musicians, continue to write and explore and just put a modest studio in my home. I play out twice a month with a couple of bands and having fun. Find your own version of what the dream is and never lose sight of the beauty of music.

Deal was done, and both stayed true. A family move, and we had to give up our instructor. Forward, we have YOU! Subscribed to your channel and all of your courses. You are our new “instructor” and go to guitar guru! THANK YOU ROBERT!⭐️🙏⭐️🙏⭐️🙏⭐️🙏⭐️🙏.

I wish I had KZfaq when I was a kid. Because right now I would be coming out of detox for the 18th time, trying to get my wife to come back to me. With 20 gold records on the wall. I would have dove head first into that whole rock and roll lifestyle for sure. All in was how I dove into things. Great advice Robert! Instead I fell in love and raised a family, only to be able to get into guitar lessons and dubbing around later in my life.

Hey Robert, Very cool. I appreciate the honesty. I’m 66 and picked up guitar about 5 years ago. I had tried 3 times previously starting at 18. I’m going to in-person lessons now. It’s pretty cool. I’m working on Rory Gallagher’s version of Messin’ With The Kid. It’s hard. I love it!

I’ve been playing and learning for 40 years. What’s made me happy is creating my own stuff, buying and selling/trading gear until I get what I want and finding the perfect situation to allow that. I work by myself overnight which allows me all the time in the world to create and play and I pick up occasional odd jobs that afford me to go after new gear. It’s been perfect so far. Got 3 lps, 2 explorers, a strat, 2 teles, a Parker Fly, an Ovation Breadwinner, 2 Peavey Odysseys and a Steinberger. All that within last 5 months or working my tail off. Not to mention the amps, pedals and recording equipment. I’m making progress and am so comfortable where I’m at. It really is THE thing for me.

Great video Robert. I’m 60 next month and have been in out different angles of the guitar world. In the 80’s I was in a signed UK thrash metal band and did the whole “thing” only to reach burn out and give up. After a few years I picked it back up and starting to teach for a bit but I was missing something. It’s trying to narrow down that pyramid climb to find what you’re good at and what your strengths are. I found out by accident I’m reasonably good at mentoring and seeing hidden talents so I use that in my music endeavours. We all have a path and it’s not always the one we originally walked.

Cool topic, thx for sharing. Well i knew from an early age i wanted to be a rock star by watching my dads VHS’s on KISS live shows. Since i was a kid iv’e kept playing mainly drums until i was about 20. Started to reach out to other musicians and eventually found a band as a guitar player. That band didn’t have any noticable success but we played alot of gigs and we had a good time. I quit that band and didn’t play with another until some years later when i stumbled upon an add from a semi established that needed a guitar player. I got the gig and this was a huge transition for me. Those guys where pretty hard on me and had me work on my stage precence and things that makes a good show. I got to tour with that band flying across the globe, staying on sometimes fancy hotels but mostly cheap motels. I got to play for big audiences and open up for more well known acts. This was truly the time of my life living the dream i had since i was a kid. Unfortunately the budget our label gave us for the tours ran out mid tour so it got very expensive, not to mention taking time of from my every day job to tour. I had to give up the dream when me and my wife had our first kid. For me family comes first and the label money did not pay my bills so i had to quit. Looking back at this time i realise how much effort and time it takes to get anywhere in music, especially in rock and metal. These guys had been playing for 10+ years before i joined, their still around but they all have every day jobs. I guess you need a tremendous amount of luck to get successful in this buissines. Im happy to have at least lived my dream if only for a moment. Cheers

It's ok to not know what you want to do out of high school or in your 20s or 30s or 40s etc. And it's ok to change what you thought you wanted to do as you experience new things. I've dont a lot of jobs in my life, but it wasn't until I was in my 30s that I landed in software dev and everything clicked. Especially as I moved up and shifted more from doing to teaching. Your dream may not be your career but something you do as a hobby. Best piece of advice I've received. You have work, hobbies and family. At most you can be good at 2 of them.

I have a similar story. I started playing guitar at 16. (I'm 23 right now) and got into it because I was trying to impress a girl haha. Didn't get the girl :( but I got something way better! Thanks to my English teacher who also played guitar and was able to teach a few things. We really bonded over that. Learning guitar introduced me to so many genres of music and quickly fell in love with 60-70-80-90 rock music even tried to grow my hair out. (didn't work out) guitar got me through my worst years as a teen and forever thankful that I stuck with it. The guitar really changed my life. For a while I kinda left it and forgot about how beautiful it was. Got stuck in the daily routine of my 9-5 office job and figuring out my life as a 22/23 yr old. At the moment I'm Going through a breakup and the guitar has once again helped me get through tough times. Stick to guitar don't give up. Cheers!

Hey Robert, Great video! I am a very old musician, singing my whole life, playing guitar since 1976(Whoa! From the Stone Age here!!) I have basically done everything I wanted to do as a musician, I played on my Praise and Worship Team at Church, toured all over the Southeast U.S. for years playing Blues(way back in the 1990's) Recorded in the studio and live, I have played the smallest hole in the wall bar to sports arenas. The only venue I never played was a stadium, but, yeah, life on the road is no way to live your life, I got to the point where I hated it so much, I quit playing at all for 2 years!! My dream certainly changed many times over the last 47 years, now I live a normal life and play for my own(and of course, my neighbor's) enjoyment. Keep doing your thing brother, I sure get a lot out of watching this channel, as I'm sure many others do, Rock On!!

Born in 1957... Started playing drums in 1969 and was gigging as a teenager but was always fascinated with guitar... Rode the train from Montgomery, AL to Nashville in 1975 at age 18 to get a real job... a 15- year career selling audio gear had begun... Retail burnout eventually pushed me into insurance adjusting... Got first acoustic guitar (Yamaha FG-110) sometime in the late 80s to start learning on my own while on the road every Spring & Summer in the Catrostphy biz... Got second acoustic in the mid-90s (1980 Sigma-Martin D-18 which I still have) Bought first electric guitar & amp in 2001 but it didn't stick because I didn't try very hard and it didn't travel very well, so I sold it all... The China-Virus lockdown re-energized my desire to learn or to at least get better at guitar and learn some theory which morphed into building and working on guitars and amps... Today I have the same Sigma, 8 electric's, 2 tube amps, and a 14-piece pedalboard with a nice Studio One set-up in my music room. Seems like I enjoy the gear and finding "That Tone" as much as playing and learning licks. The funny thing is... it's all been for my own enjoyment to create anything that sounds good as I have zero desire to gig live. I run sound for a local dance band with 4 members each having over 50 years of live gigging experience, so that kinda covers any hidden live desires. Music and learning music is the most rewarding thing a human can do to bring joy and a sense of accomplishment to one's life. 😇

Gidday Robert (yes, I'm Australian)... I've been playing for 47 years but in recent years my ability to play has become severely impaired by arthritis and tendon problems in my hands. I had a left thumb arthroplasy seven years ago which fixed the arthritis in my thumb but reduced its length by about 6mm which has shortened my hand's reach around the guitar neck by the same amount. Combined with arthritis in my left little pinky this means that I've lost about 80% of my chord repertoire, particularly jazz extensions. Now I've got more hand problems; too many to mention. I've had to deal mentally with the fact that my (amateur) guitar-playing career is coming to an end... not easy but I have to face reality. Thanks for a great video mate, cheers.

I remember the early days of KZfaq becoming a real job thing, I had a few videos that hit hundreds of thousands of views. I messed up and turned down the partnership. I went with Dustin Jack and Phil X to SXSW where they spoke about KZfaq and building their following. At the time they had built Fretted Americana to 40 million viewers!! I learned a lot from them and I also learned a lot from other KZfaqrs. I had decided to take the path of KZfaq greatness & then I was on the bad side of an accident. I actually have a crazy story that’s Forrest Gump on steroids! Maybe I’ll tell about it on my channel. It’s just nuts! I do dig this story, sit down and talk stuff. Dude.... I honestly gave up on that dream of being a successful touring musician in my 30's. Primarily because I learned what a cut-throat industry the music business is. Plus I also realized there were a million others like me, who were better than me, all trying to do the same thing. I did the band thing and for 20 years I was a guitar player/lead vocalist in a tribute band. We did okay, we made money but most of the time I struggled to get the next gig and I had 3 agents "not-working" for me..... all while having a full-time job. Music is an expensive hobby. Having a band becomes more expensive and when you don't have the funds to invest or have people unwilling to invest what they earn it becomes a losing proposition. So now, I sit in my studio, write music and try to record stuff that I'm happy with. I'll listen to guys like Greg Koch, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Billy Gibbons, Jeff Beck and still wonder how they do some of the things they do. Thanks for keeping it goofy and fun.... the way it should be.

Its always fascinating to me how players like you get so good in 2-3 years. I play for 10 years now but I can never be consistent with my practice so I havent reached the level that I could have. Its frustrating because I absoloutely love every aspect of music (listening, playing, writing, recording, producing, mixing, etc) and I finally got in a band, five years after I started searching but I still lack motivation and I cant figure out how to break out of this funk.

My philosophy is that the most important thing in life is to be happy. If playing music makes you happy then do it, if it doesn’t then maybe don’t do it or find a way to fit it into your life in a positive way. Of course it’s not always as simple as that but happiness and low amounts of stress is key 😊
im just tired.
