When Buddha said "desire is the root cause of suffering" he meant it for greed. Buddha or any other saint emphasized on channelizing the desires to achieve something not to waste our energies upon variety of things in a world full of impostors. As Ayn Rand says, "Integrity is the ability to live for an idea which presupposes the ability to think."

When do you know your desire is not greed. people can all ways find greedy aspect in all desires.
@Kartikeyamani

Desire always uplifts and develops a man. Fulfilling a desire always makes a man happy permanently. Greed always degrades him and makes him insane. Greed leads to temporary happiness and misery in the long term.

So you are saying, start with Desire and if you fail to achieve your desire, and become unhappy. because you became unhappy it was greed not desire. So all failed desire are greed because you became unhappy.

and why do you think Buddha said "desire is the root cause of suffering" instead of "greed is the root cause of suffering" or "over desire is the root cause of suffering"
@Kartikeyamani
@Kartikeyamani 9 жыл бұрын
A true desire met with a failure fills inspiration and improves us irrespective of success or failure. A greed will make us unhappy and damage us ultimately irrespective of success or failure. I like to replace Buddha's terminology of desire with greed because of the context he was in while using those words. His intention which he meant to.

I am a fan of RGV. His frankness and intelligence are praise worthy. But, I am surprised about blatant ignorance about Buddhism. Buddha never said to be desireless. Infact his goal was to seek highest happiness which is unconditional. He gave 2 paths - One to happy in this world and another path to attain nirvana which is higher state then samsara world. Why would someone like Einstein who is 1 million times more intelligent than RGV praise Buddhism ?. RGV is intelligent guy and probably has not read Buddhism and probably not qualified to talk about this topic. The interviewer is also dumb in this area for not asking intelligent questions. Having said that, RGV we still like you but you better stick to topics of worldly pleasures and self-improvement. You are good at that and definitely worth listening to.

@ P SK .. good to read your comments... Buddha said "desire is the root cause of all evil" which you can google.. RGV did not mention that Buddha said to be desireless. It is RAMUISM and he has his own perspective about a topic which maybe or may not be true .. its just his own perspective. Coming to the next point about EINSTEIN, Einstein may be 1 million times intelligent in particular stream like science, but RGV is definitely smarter than Einstein which doesn't mean RGV is intelligent than Einstein. There are several scientists who oppose EINSTEIN only because EINSTEIN haven't used his commonsense in his famous Theory called theory of relativity.! No offense .. I just want to share my view :)

Rajesh Alamalakala Rajesh - Thanks for responding. Please don't come to conclusions about Buddhism just by google. Desire is root cause of all evil is total misinterpretation of what Buddha said. Buddha said there are skillful desires and unskillful desires. Buddha gave 2 ways to live - One for worldly people (full of desires) and one for monks. Buddha would give Thumbs up for all the scientific advancement in the world. He is scientist of inner world. He said not to become slave of desire in a nutshell (Which is what RGV is about). It takes time to get essence of Buddhism. RGV has every right to talk about Buddhism but just feel he is not researched much about it. Intelligence/Smart this is all play of words...Buddha just saying there is a world called Nirvana which he thinks higher happiness and there is way. Note that Buddha was king also enjoyed lot of girls in palace like RGV haha

The anchor swapna garu doesnt argue in a way a debate generally goes. She rises a question and accepts all that RGV says as answers. She herself plays safe by neither debating hardly nor by accepting Rgv doesnt seem to have enough maturity to comment on Buddhism or GOD. He has enough intelligence but not direction. He has a mix of intelligence and also ignorance on some issues. Any true thinker is always open to new ideas and new possibilities. Rgv is really dead actually not the thoughtless ones. Rgv is struck in his own web of Ayan rand, Neitzsche and Spinzoa. He thinks every thinker from the west is a genius and all Indian thinkers are fools. He basically doesnt even recognise that their might be other possibilities. Buddha taught the following: 1. the middle path which is neither pursuing desires nor shunning them but never to identify oneself with the thought. Buddha asks to observe what all occurs in your mind and that is ''Attention''. With prolonged attention one comes to the stage where you see the world as the play of the 5 elements of nature and the 3 gunas. Until then you will see individuals performing actions and you see yourself as an individual. 2. when the attention is continued at all times one comes to a state where he sees only one consciousness or one infinite being without anyother. He calls that as the NON-SELF or VOID. That is the stage where the mind realises that it is only a collection of thoughts and not a reality. That realisation is the starting point to know the ultimte reality which is called as NIRVANA in Buddhism. 3. Ram gopal varma has a objective vision and he cannot grasp or even understand the subtle truths of spirituality revealed by Buddha or many other sages. He says any philosophy must LEAD TO PROGRESSIVE EVOLUTION and thats exactly his problem. As long as you think that you are the body and the mind and as long as you embrace only those philosophies which perpetuate your individuality rather than revealing the truth about the individuality you are bound to not understand the words of Buddha.

Social, political, economical, environmental, ecological, scientific and technological paradigms of today are so different from when buddha lived. Why do you think buddha's philosophy is relevant in the modern world? And, you think that RGV is making a mistake by sticking to the likes of Ayan Rand and Neitzsche and while you yourself stick to the much older philosophy of buddha where most of the terms and states of mind are so ambiguous. What exactly is Nirvana? Is it nothingness? What is nothingness to a thinking mind? This is what RGV was talking in this episode, that NIRVANA is just so mumbo-jumbo invented by losers. What is the point of attaining the so-called nothingness even after having a brain whose sole purpose is to think and which is the result of millions of years of evolution. It is so stupid to wanting to attain nirvana after being born with a thinking BRAIN. And how can we know for sure Nirvana or non-self is a true state of mind? In reality, the odds are so much in favour of buddha having had some psychological problems due to disfunctioning of his temporal lobe than his philosophy of nirvana being true. Even today, after making so much progress in psychology and neruoscience, many in India blindly follow the babas blindly and majority in the world assume halluciations are true, for ex., seeing ghosts or near-death experiences. And, imagine the understanding of the people 2000 years ago about the problems related to psychology and brain.

Chenna K Hello Brother. The state of no mind or the no individuality is the ultimate state. If you are not able to understand it or see it then its your problem not mine. There are dimensions much bigger than the mind. Buddha never said to avoid using the mind. 1. The mind is a gateway between the infinite being and the limited being. As long as you want to perpetuate and think you are an individual you are bound to remain there. There are dimensions bigger than mind. Time and space are in the mind only. There are realms beyond the mind where even the mind could be a part. Everything is here and now all times spaces and events. 2. Buddha never said to not use the mind. He said transcend the mind. That is giving due importance to the mind but at the same time not identifying with the mind. Thats not only what Buddha said but every true spiritual practise will end there 3. I reply to you just to let you know that people like you might argue whatever u want but u remain in the state of argument. The body was not created by you. Your mind was not created by you.Your body-mind are bound to perish. Can you stop them???. What truth is there in that which is continuously changing??.Thats what Buddha says. Everything comes and goes but the real you remains as it is. This is what Buddha calls Nirvana. 4. Buddha is not a person and its a state. Every being has Buddhahood in it. Your understanding of Buddha is so minimal and i think u dont have the maturity or prowess to make a valid argument. You seem to comment just for the sake of commenting and iam replying you to say that people like you never bother me and doesnt mean anything to me. You are like a frog in an well thinking that the well is the universe. I hereby say that you are not even worthy of a comment by me defending anyone but still i decided to comment to let you know no body cares.

Here I want to clarify what Buddha and other saints are thought " THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF LIFE IS KNOWING WHO I AM". The one who knows whom he his, then he knows the ultimate truth and ends rebirth.This is know as NIRVANA or SAMMADI. Yes, Buddha had a DESIRE to know the ultimate truth, He struggled for years following varies ways to find the cause of Birth and death. At the end he found away and reached that state and found the truth. I Totally disagree with RVG on Buddhism, because having a desire is not bad. But what level of degree of desire we have makes a person wise. Having a desire to have sex with a girl (or) conquer a country (or) to buy a duplex house. I think the Ultimate desire is to find the truth of life. Saints and monks are not sand or ameba. They are beyond your intellectual level in finding the truth. RGV have desire to be top director, so he direct movies. He his on his mission. The same way the saints and monks are sitting in cage and meditating to find the truth, that his their mission. I thought RGV was a very intellectual person, but by his view on Buddhism. I think he his way behind the intellectual person and proved to be unaware of ultimate intellectual degree.

His Thoughts are completely Wrong.. he is an intelligent.. but he is controlled & surrendered to certain perception.. and he is thinking those are the right once. As he always says that, every one need to keep thinking beyond what why perceives. he should also do that.... he needs to read the books of Ramakrishna paramahamsa or at least Baghavdhageetha with open mind. then he will get the right realization. Hope he will get right right guru in the life who will makes him realized what is Aathama.. and why we need to control our desires etc...
