Boy, do we have some amazing things to show you this week on our historic home restoration! Let's get the big news right out of the way: WE ARE BUILDING A ROOF! Yes, a whole new roof structure is going up, and after months of planning and plotting it's going up REALLY fast! SO, come along as Kevin shows you some of the secrets of raising a roof that is going to last another 200 years!
Then, at your request, we are sharing updates with you on the restoration of the cottage. Oh, what cottage you ask? The cottage the hoarder was living in that we could smell before we could see on our first visit to the property. It's cleaned out, cleaned up, and pretty much rebuilt and we'll be moving in soon...we hope.
Lastly, let us take you along with us on some really fun field trips. Cinderella gets to go the ball, we treasure hunt in HIDDEN ROOMS, and have some incredibly special visitors come by to check on the progress at Hope.
Really, REALLY big things are happening, and this is still just the beginning!

Digging around in that surprise space would be the most exciting thing for me. So many treasures to be found. I think that the "Iron" is called a "Mangle"... A mangle (British) or wringer (American)[1] is a mechanical laundry aid consisting of two rollers in a sturdy frame, connected by cogs and (in its home version) powered by a hand crank or by electricity. While the appliance was originally used to squeeze water from wet laundry, today mangles are used to press or flatten sheets, tablecloths, kitchen towels, or clothing and other laundry.

Laine, you are a stunner in red velvet! I love seeing how well you two have fit in with the Natchez history folk. I save bits of tile, old dish fragments, etc. from my yard, though I doubt most are older than the 1930s. Your haul was really beautiful. Once I was convinced to climb up on my boyfriend's roof to watch the fireworks. It took me an hour to get down again. As long as I have something to hold (with a death grip) onto, I can handle it, but my vertigo kicks in otherwise. I'm the one who stays 20 feet back from the edge when visiting the Grand Canyon..."I can see it fine from here, thanks!" LOL! Congrats on your progress with the roof. I have a 1931 custom built Spanish style house, and I've had roofers out 5 times over the last 6 years trying to fix a weird slow leak where the tile roof meets the parapet walls. I did a little dance when the fellow from the current company said they'd pull up all the tiles, break away the (3 layers of old) stucco, put in metal Z-strips, layer in new material and put the tile back, "because that's they way these old houses were built". It can be so frustrating getting your wonky old house fixed properly, whether it's just from age, settling, different phases of building with different standards (or no standards), or from as you call it, "re-muddling". It's great to come here, among people who get it. Hope your neck is better soon!

In the 1980's, I bought and restored (wrote a lot of checks) a 1868 carpenter gothic home in Morgantown, WV. It was sold after 24 years and I now own and live where I grew up on 5 acres of an old farm w/ house and barn. I wanted so much to come to your March event and had that time free. However, when I heard you say that the dress code would be leggings and sweat shirts, my heart sank. I don't own leggings. When I dress near to that way, I am either mowing, tilling of cutting brush. I have always wanted to come to Natchez, but apparently that is out of the question. Are the little bowls in the basement for shrimp cocktail....you can put ice in them and the shrimp around the edges w/ sauce in the center?
@OurRestorationNation
@OurRestorationNation 3 ай бұрын
Well that’s silly. The dress code is “you be you”. Wear what you’re comfortable in. We do a lot of running and seeing and doing during our weekends and most people dress for comfort, whatever that looks for them. If “comfort”‘for you means full in evening wear then that’s comfort for you: we just want you to be happy and enjoy your time, and not have “oh no, I have to buy a lot of anything to wear” to be a concern.
@sacredlovetarot1971
@sacredlovetarot1971 3 ай бұрын
I encourage you to watch the wonderful video from last year's event, Laine wouldn't be so inconsiderate to the comfortability of others by demanding leggings and sweat shirts be the rule of the day. I think the both of you along with your many helpers are doing a fine job at restoring Hope Farm. Have to agree about the roof. You just can’t throw one up n it expect it to look like the original one. It takes time n many mines to figure all the needs that need to be done right. What fun it must of been to finding that other part of the basement. I bet there’s lots of goodies to be found. Can’t wait to see the cottage when you get that kitchen done n picking that beautiful green for appliances n of course the sink. Saw Lane’s presentation the other day n thought she’s a wonderful speaker. Keep at it guys you’re doing great. Thanks for sharing more info on your big project. ♥️♥️😊👍👍👍🌟

I love that you are taking your time and getting this right! I had owned an 1878 Queen Ann. It had been sectioned off as 2 apartments in the 1960s. I hired a gentleman with great references to help bring back as much of the original interior as possible. Halfway through the process, I fired him! He kept nothing! Plaster and lathe torn out and much worse. I did end up finding someone to undo all the damage and bring back this glorious home! Thank God the dumpster was still there to rescue windows, pillars, and molding. But it takes time and patience!
