So happy to have you here! 😘 The insert is actually the original one that we painted black and the stone is a landscaping flagstone that we found at our local stone yard.

Thanks! Ours was custom made and is painted wood. We will likely upgrade to the precast one for durability in the future, but went with the wood one for time and cost purposes. I’ve used Stone Mountain Castings for prefab mantels on quite a few projects and they have some great options. There’s a paint grade one that may work for what you need, or a finish carpenter may be able to build you one like ours!

The entire room is about 14x22 but of course we are allowing for walkways on 3 sides in the space 😉

Kind of crazy, but Studio McGee actually has followed me on IG for years and their home layout appears to be based off of mine (not the house in this video, but our main home) and if you go look at my basement family room design you will see that she is currently doing something nearly identical in her basement. If you go back and look at her style from 3 yrs ago vs mine 3 yrs ago, you will see that it is actually hers that has changed more. Mine has stayed quite consistent since I built our home 3.5 years ago. I get messages all the time from people saying that her home layout looks so much like mine (mine was done a couple years before hers). I think she’s the better designer, but my style is my own and I love it :)

Ahh boo! Viviana - how long have you followed Mollie? I've followed her since she 2015 - I didn't even hear about (the wonderful!) Studio McGee until about a year ago. Mollies style has been neutrals, euro, and timeless since I've known her. We all evolve our styles, right? But I will say Mollies "European modern home" (finished 3 years ago) is actually the original style. Designers ARE inspired from each other, which is awesome!! Take and give. But in this case, Mollie is the trendsetter! Shay is truly amazing and her style caters to more high end and expensive details. Mollie focuses on the masses being able to attain "design and detail!" I mean, I can't afford anything from the real McGee and Co, Studio for my house - but Mollies swipes ups I sure can! Both are wonderful avenues and directions, but like I stated already, Mollie IS the design trendsetter and SM has been inspired by Mollie at Design Loves Detail! :)

Hi Molly, thanks for taking the time to respond. I’m so sorry to hear that Studio McGee coveted your style. Don’t worry. It’s been evident she does that. I just wasn’t aware that it was from you. Credit must be given where it’s due. She is not at all a better designer if she’s taking from others and saying it was all her. That’s a better copy cat. I know how annoying this could be. I had a neighbor that copied everything I did and at some point I was very uncomfortable around her. I believe it’s time to change then Molly. Evolution is important also. Studio McGee has a feel now that you know what it is as soon as you see it. I think ultimately the credit goes to the old world European architecture.
