This was great! It is a little misleading but that's just so you know its references. The fact it's not some transcription but like a love letter towards the original is awesome. That's how I hear it anyway. (Also the fact they made it almost all winds and took out the importance of piano is a pretty cool)

Excellent performance and arrangement. However, does the video director have access to THE SCORE? Using a wide shot to cover a lack of 'iso-cams' doesn't leave much room for, say, the clarinet solo by Victor Goines @ 4: 12 mark . . . . oh, there he is on yet another wide shot. Where's the close-up? It's not good video practice to miss the beginnings of various solos, such as the bari solo @ 4:34 mark . . . Where's your SCORE? But, I DO love the expanded orchestra . . . though, none of the extra players seem to have their instruments with them. Lush audio !! Lighting is great !

Too be honest, to say this is a classical piece or jazz piece is quite tricky. It was written for a classical ensemble, format and form with obvious jazz influences however but the composer, George Gershwin, is mostly known for writing popular american songbook and jazz standard tunes. Either way, this was originally arranged by duke Ellington and performed with his band. Hes done a plentiful amount of other classical arrangements such as the Peer Gynt suite

I’m sorry. I thought that this is the most lugubrious rendition of Rhapsody in Blue that I have ever heard. I agree that there are other ways to interpret this piece than Leonard Bernstein’s. Eumir Deodato had a really good, non traditional rendition in 1973. But this one must have George Gershwin spinning in his grave.
@howardherrnstadt73673 жыл бұрын
You haven't heard it done by a German symphony. {:-) To me it's like a "sweet" dance band version, and a very, very good one.
@jstasiak22623 жыл бұрын
@@howardherrnstadt7367 The original version of Rhapsody in Blue was a sweet “Jazz Band Version” orchestrated by Ferde Grofé and played by George Gershwin with the Paul Whiteman orchestra. That was an excellent rendition but the recording from the late 1920s is primitive. Another rendition of the original Grofé orchestration by James Levine and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (with saxophones) is also outstanding. But this rendition by the JALCO is totally sour grapes.Gershwin is puckering in his grave.

Disagree strongly. But that is why it is called art. This version puts the Blue firmly back in to Rhapsody in Blue. Wonderful Afro American interpretation!
@fantasyoverture3 жыл бұрын
This is the Ellington/Strayhorn 1962 arrangement for the album "Will the Big Bands Ever Come Back?", which itself seems to be based on Glenn Miller's version. It probably won't change your opinion, but I'd say listen to Duke's original recording for a little more context to this performance; it's a pretty cool arrangement in my mind!

Just the fact that you chose the word “lugubrious” puts your comment in it’s own self-referential perspective.

I’m sorry. This is the most lugubrious rendition of this piece that I have ever heard. I agree that it can have a different interpretation than the original Ferde Groffe / Paul Whiteman / Leonard Bernstein one. Eumir Deodato had a real good one from 1973. But this dirge makes George Gershwin spin in his grave.
