Guys, THIS was the THE SONG that launched Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks in to the aural stratosphere. This song was where her Welsh Witch persona derived: Unbeknownst to Stevie, at the time, when she wrote the song in late 1974, the song perfectly depicted the Goddess of Birds and Horses, Rhiannon (from Welsh Mythology). It was kind of a poetic premonition by Stevie, and she's never been the same since. Since 1978, she's had an entire album/soundtrack of songs written for an animated film called, The Song of Rhiannon, that's still in the works. I believe this single went to #14 on the charts, and stayed there for like 6 or 7 weeks, much to Mick Fleetwood's delight...it became one of the biggest reasons new and old fans of the band came to see them live in 1976 and onward. You guys should watch Fleetwood Mac's 1997 (The Dance) live performance next, to get the visual effect.

Rodzilla Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks would go on to make more albums and go on tour, many of their songs to be played on the radio. In a lucid dream by Stevie she saw that if they sold albums prior to going on tour fans would know the songs when they were performed. Stevie sang some songs, others she didn’t. After having an erotic dream one night Stevie was inspired to write “Tusk”. All the songs on the Fleetwood Mac albums are performed by Fleetwood Mac.

Please listen to the live version in 76 . Stevie introduces "this is a song about an old welsh witch". She wrote this song after reading an old tale. The entire band goes crazy during the live performance with Lindsey doing a fantastic solo and then Stevie gets almost possessed and what you hear in this studio version as the end...well, she is just getting started in the live version. And also, if you enjoy "The Chain", check out the original demo of it that Stevie showed to the band before they reworked it. It's on the rumors extended version and listed here as "The Chain Demo". But it's just Stevie and a guitar and it is SO GOOD. She took bits and pieces that the studio version didn't end up using and you can hear them in some of her other songs. Just a fantastic songwriter.

I'd like to recommend Linda Ronstadt. One of the great vocalists of the 70's. At one time Linda was the best selling female artist and had many huge hits in the 70's. Her original backing band was The Eagles, yes my dudes, those Eagles. Her 1974 album Heart Like a Wheel is a stone cold classic. I recommend starting with her amazing cover of the Little Feat song Willin', or Dark End of the Street both from Heart Like a Wheel. Interesting comments about not understanding what it was about and then Alex saying it sounded 'witchy'. Stevie wrote the song about the legend of a Welsh witch named Rhiannon. Fleetwook Mac started out with Peter Green and was a major blues band but after Green left, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie added Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks and a new incarnation was born, starting with the album this was on. They really came to appreciate Lindsey's sterling guitar work and Stevie's amazing writing.

I realize you don't want to do a reaction to the same song twice but I would love to see how you two react to their live Midnight Special performance of this song from 1976. They were really starting to hit the peak of their performance era at that time and she really digs into that performance. Seeing you watch them play would be great: Mick's drumming, Christie on keyboards, John McVie on bass, and Lindsey Buckingham's ripping guitar solo, to say nothing about Stevie's vocals. S-tier all the way. If you want to do a second song compare that performance to the acoustic Landslide from The Dance in 1997. Older and more mature but just as good.

That’s utter crap. Although Buckingham and Nicks group (Fritz) opened for Hendrix and Janis Joplin, she was never a back up singer for either.
