If I understand well, you have: - a 3dm file that contains material data and cannot be directly used as a proxy - a proxy file that contains the material data - a 3dm file that only saves the geometry Is it possible to import a 3dm file of a tree that also carries material information. And once I realise I have to multiply it, use a proxy that also contains material data? Because 3 files does not make sense

Hi Tablo, If I am understanding you correctly, then the answer is yes. You can open or import a .3dm file of the tree that has V-Ray materials applied to it and then save the geometry as a V-Ray proxy. Within that file you can then insert more examples of the proxy tree object (or copy the existing proxy) and the material definitions are remembered as they are held in the .3dm file.

Is it always necessary to insert Rhino Block Instances from separate files? What would happen if you just create the block instance inside the final file (in this case would be the one that has both the tray and the deodorant).

Hey, when I import a proxy vrmesh into rhino all the textures disappear as shown in your video. However when I try to apply a bitmap texture to the proxy using the same method you showed, the texture does not appear and simply displays an average colour. Any advice?

this method looks like the perfect workaround, however when I insert the rhino proxy file as a block, it shows up in 3D space, but when I go to interactive V-Ray render, it doesn't show up. I can't seem to figure out what is going wrong. when the v-ray coding prompt starts churning during the render, it looks like it is showing up with an error message because it can't find the proxy file. does this method work with v-ray 3.4?

Hi Martin, I just checked this with V-Ray 3.40.02 and Rhino 5 SR14 and all works as per this video. The dialogs in V-Ray 3.4 are slightly different to as shown in the video. First you need to create the Proxy object by using the Rhino command ‘visWriteVRMesh’, this will then prompt you to save a location for the proxy file. Choose the ‘Replace objects with new proxy’ option and your Rhino geometry will be replaced by the Proxy mesh. Save the Rhino file. Open a new Rhino file and use ‘Insert’ to bring in the previous Rhino file as a Block Instance. Thanks, Phil.

I have an issue with Your method of using vray proxy saved as .3dm and inserted to the new file. When I try to render it, Rhino crash immediatelly every time. After importing vray proxy file it renders without problems, but as You said in this video, with different textures.

Hi Czarny, sorry to hear you are having problems with the process. Simply, the idea is to save a Rhino file with just the V-Ray proxy object in it - the materials are then stored in this Rhino file and the geometry in the V-Ray proxy file. With regards to the crashing - are your Rhino and V-Ray up to date? If the proxy file is too large this can sometimes cause problems so large collections of geometry can be split into a number of V-Ray proxies all of which can be held in one Rhino file. As far as I tried it doesnt matter how big or small proxy object saved as .3dm and inserted to new file cause crashing. It just do it every time. So I have to do it only with proxys and overwrite materials. When I will have more time, I'll do updates and maybe reinstall. Till now, thank You very much for help!

I'm also having this issue, crash every time on rendering. It's a shame, as it is a really nice method.

I am actually seeing updates ready to install, but I am not admin :( So I imagine it is this...? I will need to speak to the system admin.
