Fun fact: This band was a start-up formed by the bassist for the talking heads. The Talking Heads were huge at the time, but she wanted to get out and sample and do different music. Amazing that this song has so much relevance today. It's an excellent, zany piece of work

This was, to my knowledge, my mother's favorite song. No matter what she was doing, if it played, she was dancing- My mom was a bit more like an older sibling than my mother (she was 18 when she had me), and I distinctly remember as a kid she'd play this constantly. Whole nine yards: hand movement dancing. Singing every word like it was her song. My mom passed 2 years ago, but every time I hear this song, it takes me back to the summer of 2001, which was probably the best time of my life (even though I was only 6). RIP, Momma- I'm still playing this song daily for you 😊

The song is one of the most sampled rhythm tracks of the 1980s, particularly within the hip hop and R&B genre. Notable versions include Dr. Jeckyl & Mr. Hyde's "Genius Rap" in 1981; Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five's "It's Nasty" in 1982; Mariah Carey's "Fantasy" in 1995, and The X-Ecutioners' "Genius of Love 2002" in 2002. Other artists have incorporated "Genius of Love" into their works, including Public Enemy's "Leave This Off Your Fuckin' Charts", Redman's "Brick City Mashin'", Cam'ron's "Me, My Moms & Jimmy", 2nd II None's "Niggaz Trippin'", Fresh Kid Ice's "Roll Call", 2Pac's "High Speed", Seagram's "I Don't Give a Fuck", Busta Rhymes' "One", Ant Banks' "Roll 'Em Phat", P.M. Dawn's "Gotta Be... Movin' On Up", Menajahtwa's "I Ain't Nasti", 50 Cent's "When I Get Out", Erick Sermon's "Genius E Dub", Mac Dre's "Chop that Ho", Dream Warriors' "And Now the Legacy Begins", T.I.'s "Down Like That", R.A. the Rugged Man's "Tom Thum", Mark Morrison's "Return of the Mack", Ice Cube's "Bop Gun (One Nation)", Warren G's "What's Love Got to Do with It", the D-Influence Real Live Mix of Billie's "Girlfriend", Latto's "Big Energy", and Paramore's "Rose-Colored Boy", during their shows at the After Laughter Tour.

We still hear this today. Mariah Carey used it in her song “Fantasy” that topped the billboard hot 100 for 8 weeks and just last year Latto sampled it in her song “Big Energy”. The funny thing is, when they talk about the song “big energy”, they say Lotto sampled it from Mariah Carey without even realizing where it actually came from and how old it really is. And in another 30-40 years when everyone forgets it again, someone else will sample it to make it a hit again.

In Latto's case, I think she really did sample it because of Mariah. Her song "Big Energy" has the line "I can be your fantasy" in it and she also said she idolized Mariah growing up. Strangely enough, she initially denied the Mariah reference at first saying that she had never heard of "Fantasy" before, but now Mariah is on the remix edition so Idk what was going on there.

@@WilliamHBaird-eq2hp You just moved the goalpost from “she created the hip hop sound” to “her white privilege helped introduce it to the masses”. So which one is it? That’s why we should have gatekept hip hop from non-black outsiders. You made an entire career from appropriating our culture and now you’re attributing another outsider to its creation? You’re a joke and you lack self-awareness. “William H Baird”, what’s wrong, daddy stopped paying your college tuition when he realized you suck at math so you had to take away what little space they let black people have to eat and feed their families? Literally the worst kind of person.

When l am walking from elementary school or watching karate movies this song was always in my head and open gym too this song would be playing. Now listening it takes me back to my childhood. What a wonderful time to be alive during a time of great music. Life was simple and easy back then. Great music was every where black and white. The great 80's. There Will never and ever be a time like that 1980-1983. Those years were the greatest for me when l listening to music. Thanks for posting.

@Bradley Daniels Assigning any special significance to any one particular member of Talking Heads completely ignores and spits on how every member of that band was completely integral to the sound, and they would not have worked as a band without each other. David Byrne’s voice and a lot of his own ideas on how to communicate what the band was verbally _saying,_ as well as his ideas about stage performance in general, was *just* as important as Tina’s writing and impeccable bass. There can be no whole without all the parts.
