Watch the official music video for "Breaking The Chains" by Dokken.
The song appears on the band's debut album of the same name and was released as a single in 1983 through Elektra Records, being the band's first American single. The song peaked at #32 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, and stayed on the chart for 13 weeks.
The video begins cutting between the band performing the song in a house and performing on a black stage. The band is later chained up in a dungeon before George Lynch breaks free and performs the song's solo. As Lynch performs the solo the other band members break free one by one. After the solo, Don Dokken wakes up chained to a bed, alone, before breaking free. The video ends with shots of the band performing in the house, in the dungeon, and against a backdrop of chains that explode as the video ends.

True story: I'm 26 years old- I wear a black bomber jacket to work. My boss is around 60. So, I play old music on a speaker. No joke: *Breaking the Chains blares as I'm closing* "That Dokken? Damn, I haven't heard them in years- _years!_ How old are you? Goddamn, since before you were born!" Happy to make an old metal fan happy for at least a moment.

To those calling this cheesy and hair...blah blah. This is 1983/1984 Metal's golden age. There was no such thing as hair band. Those came afterwards in the late 80's with their weepy, sappy songs. During this time, bands like WASP, Motley Crue, RATT, and Dokken played melodic hooks over hard rockin' rythyms. Videos may seem over the top, but thats how we looked at these bands. The only exposure to them was through music videos and magazines. There was no internet to see them in their pajamies or street clothes. There was a mystery to these bands and these videos kept that mystique going. \m/ Long live Metal!

...until groups like Dokken, KISS, Motley Crue, Warrant, and even Stryper, started doing those stupid, insipid, sugary "Ballads"... which, of course, is what killed the Pop-Metal movement in the Early 1990s. It just got sappy out there, especially when the group Extreme did that acoustic Ballad, called "More than words". In less than a year after that, a lot of the Pop-Metal groups were nothing more than an afterthought. Then, it was onto Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Ministry, Rage Against The Machine, and other groups that were "Alternative".

I remember they got booed off stage because they had to follow Metallica. They headlined over Metallica and the crowd couldn’t go this light after Metallica shredded the stage just before them. They were an incredibly a weak act to follow a monster like Metallica. Back in the day this type of music was not in the category of hardcore metal. I came back to the video to see how the music has aged and I have to say that it is still a little cheesy. We all have our taste in music. Respect for the artists and the fans, it’s just not for me.

Sit there thinkin' In your room You feel the pressure You're goin' crazy too The walls around you Closin' in You need a change Claustophobic Feelin' scared You need somebody But no one seems to care A one way ticket A change of pace You've had enough Can't take no more Breaking the chains around you Nobody else can bind you Take a good look around you Now you're breaking the chains Got this letter Came today From my baby Who left me yesterday Said she loves me She'll come back She wants to try I won't let her She'll be upset I know it's better Than somethin' I'll regret She's been dishonest And insincere I lost my mind Twenty times a year Breaking the chains around me Nobody else can bind me Take a good look around me Now I'm breaking the chains Woke up today I'm alone I look around But baby you were gone But I don't mind And I don't worry I will survive I'm alone Now that you're gone Don't need nobody To hold or tie me down I broke the chains So let me be I've gotta be free

I love that octave riff George is doing @ 0:10 and 1:05 How did George get so good on guitar in his youth to be such a beast by the time Dokken was making albums? It wasn't like there were YT guitar instructional videos or Hal Leonard books everywhere back then. He's such a great player-if he was that good of a player when this came out I can only imagine what his private combo amp jam sessions sound like today-Ph.D clinic in shredding.
