In 1972 I dropped out of college, parked my Mach 1 Mustang and hitchhiked across the US. I was hoping to get to Oregon, but it was February - March and the weather stopped me. Spent a couple of week camped in the desert outside Tucson. When I got my first ride back to Miami, the tune on the radio was - A Horse With No Name

I'm preparing to perform this song for a dying friend. It was one of the very first songs I learned to sing and play guitar with. He introduced the song to me a little over fifty years ago, and I could never get it out of my head after that. I'm giving it back to him for the trip home. May this simple gift carry you there. Travel well, my dear friend, George Martinez.

Lyrics On the first part of the journey I was looking at all the life There were plants and birds and rocks and things There was sand and hills and rings The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz And the sky with no clouds The heat was hot, and the ground was dry But the air was full of sound I've been through the desert On a horse with no name It felt good to be out of the rain In the desert, you can remember your name 'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain La, la, la, la, la, la La, la, la, la, la, la La, la, la, la, la, la La, la, la, la, la, la After two days in the desert sun My skin began to turn red After three days in the desert fun I was looking at a river bed And the story it told of a river that flowed Made me sad to think it was dead You see I've been through the desert On a horse with no name It felt good to be out of the rain In the desert, you can remember your name 'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain La, la, la, la, la, la La, la, la, la, la, la La, la, la, la, la, la La, la, la, la, la, la After nine days, I let the horse run free 'Cause the desert had turned to sea There were plants and birds and rocks and things There was sand and hills and rings The ocean is a desert with it's life underground And a perfect disguise above Under the cities lies a heart made of ground But the humans will give no love You see I've been through the desert On a horse with no name It felt good to be out of the rain In the desert, you can remember your name 'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain La, la, la, la, la, la La, la, la, la, la, la

Your story brings 😢 to me, a lovely song for your mom. I lost my mom 2.5 yrs ago to ♋️. She was a strong woman, never showed or let her pain stop her no matter what. She took care of my older brother now 49 since 1994 (car accident ). Now I take care of him FT, bathing washroom, feeding "everything " no communication, and my father also FT. I dread the day he goes as it will be a shit show. Stay 💪 my friend.

My dad used to play this song all the time when I was young. I’m 22 now and I still remember the lyrics as if it was the first time. I’m grateful my dad had such a good taste in music. Edit: I’m 24 now! When I first wrote this comment I was homeless, now I’m mot. I hadn’t spoken to my dad in 3 years as of the original comment… yet I’ve connected with him again recently. He might be drunk most of the time but he’s still my dad and I love him. I’ve always had a rough relationship with him and my mom but I still remember the good times. Sitting by the campfire listening to this song as he gave me my first beer. He’s not doing well nowadays. Who knows how long he’s got.

This is one of those songs that bring my childhood back to life. A great song ! Singing this in the countryside of San Andreas.
