A tough but incredibly rewarding 7 mile (there and back) Autumn walk up the wonderfully remote, rugged and wild Rhinog Fawr, in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales.
The route, which starts from a carpark down a long single-track road with two cattle gates (nearest postcode LL41 4DE), passes the picturesque Pistyll Gwyn waterfall and pool, perfect for a swim on a warm day. Sadly, we had cloud and wind so we gave it a miss, but we will definitely be back to test those waters.
From here we made our way onto marsh land, which serves as a nature reserve, it was very boggy in places. The other side of the marsh are the roman steps, which we followed for a short time before making our way over to the mountain path and towards the incredible Llyn Du, which we skimmed stones in on the way back down!
After a bit of scrambling along side the LLyn, we made a push up to the peak, again, the path can be wet, slippery and can call for thoughtful foot placement at times, but massively fun. Sadly, the cloud had come in thick for the last 150 meters so visibility wasn't the best, but it was very peaceful and soulful on the top of Rhinog Fawr so we spent some time talking and eating before heading down the path we had taken to get up.
