Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, save states, or RNG manipulation
4. No evasion moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- *In gen1, evasion boosting is allowed if the Pokemon does it through means other than learning the move by level up or TM. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed. (This exception is to keep ranking consistent with my legacy videos.)
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons all my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- All in-battle glitches are allowed in generation 1
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1, banned in gen2, and allowed for bypassing terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
-- The ability Pickup can only be used if the starter has it

For Misty's Starmie, Rock Blast would've yielded better odds of victory rather than relying on Secret Power. Rock Blast hitting at least three times, stacked with its 80% accuracy gives that a 50% chance of happening, while Secret Power is just a 30% paralysis chance.

Why rely on a 50% chance of winning if you have a 100% win chance except for when you get crit or your first move missed. Yes that option was there all along.

SCOTT. All you needed to do was to use Rock Blast against Misty. Even a three-hit would've gotten the ohko! Secret Power against targets neutral to your STAB is not usually the move 😂 (btw I'm loving this series because we get to see you making mistakes again! It's always easy to see the correct moves when I'm here at home and YOU'RE out there playing. But this is the content I fell in love with; Scott getting stubborn and trying the same bad strategy over and over again when there's a clear viable option RIGHT THERE. I love your new stuff, but man, it's so nice to get a throwback moment like this!)

Ironically, the move you discounted at the start of the game would have been an answer to Exeggutor; Megahorn. You would have to learn it in place of Ice bean after Giovani, but you can buy another Ice Beam TM since you had enough money to buy Thunderbolt which in the end did not get used. You might have to teach the second Ice Beam before Lance for the Dragonite in the place of Earthquake, and then use the TM for Earthquake to swap back for the Champion, but that might not even be needed as you still got though with Rock Slide and just tanking an Outrage so might even be better to invest in some Carbos for the speed range on Pigeot. Megahorn still has bad accuracy, so you may still get some resets, but overall it has a better chance of getting through the Exeggutor than waiting for Hydro Pump to miss or a flinch from Rock Slide.

I wonder if Rock Blast would be more consistent against Misty. Secret Power has a base power of 70 whereas 3 hits from Rock Blast would equate to 111 base power with STAB. Considering the damage Secret Power did I wouldn't be surprised if 3 hits from Rock Blast would finish it off. That said I have no idea what the odds are for Rock Blast hitting more then 2 times and of course there is the accuracy to factor in so it might just end up being as inconsistent as fishing for the paralysis.

i wanna give you a few advice that might be useful for a second playthrough of rhydon: for Misty it's more reliable rock blast due to the fact that it hits always harder than secret power; in the vermilion city Pokémon center there's the vs seeker to refight trainers in case you need to grind; last advice instead of keeping ice beam or thunderbolt since two very problematic Pokémon were slowbro and exeggutor, both weak to megahorn i suggest using that move that surely destroys exeggutor due to the quad weakness, and probably kills also slowbro. Anyway love your content, i follow you since you started and seeing that you made so far it's fantastic. Keep it up man❤

Grab the Vs seeker in vermillion poke center from the girl next to Nurse Joy. Then I recommend the bug catch in the route above that has a level 20 butterfree as it gives over 800 XP and not much in the way of attacking moves. Gives good exp yields

Scott, when you finally start using the Vs. Seeker for Pokemon that require extensive training like this, be sure to consider EVs with exp. If you have a choice between peak EXP with bad EVs and decent enough EXP with needed EVs, always go for the EV trainers. Will help with outspeeding Pidgeot later on, or improving a damage roll as needed. Definitely should be included in your optimization stage once your software is up and running for this

Scott, first of all I agree with many others saying that rock blast for misty is much better than secret power, you could have won earlier. Secondly, i think that bulbasaur would have been a better starter for the rival. Thinking about his alternatives, if he takes squirtle, the grass type will be exeggutor which has a terribile movepool and is not a threat for rhydon. If he take bulbasaur, the water type will be gyarados so 2 threats for rhydon Edit: i forgot that in 3rd gen exeggutor has a better movepool, i was thinking about red and blue, so nevermind blastoise is fine

After you beat the rival on the SS Anne you said you needed to battle against wild Pokemon? So you get an item from the NPC in the Vermillion City Pokemon Center called the VS Seeker. You use it and nearby trainers have a chance to respond, get an exclaimation point above them, and you can rebattle them! I challenged the two trainers above the city which both give Speed EVs, which I feel like could've helped especially in the early game. It's also a good way to get more money too!

Also, I'm sure you would really like Pinsir...while yes, probably not good because early game Brock. It has the Hyper Cutter ability to block Feather Dance and Intimidate, it has good coverage (Rock Slide, Earthquake, Brick Break), and it knows Bulk Up and Swords Dance. I'm sure it would also be pretty decent overall and it's one of the more underrated Pokemon in Fire Red IMO.

a fair number of things went wrong in this run. rock blast the starmie has been mentioned a hundred times, megahorn to take out exeggutor wouldve been huge, what about just not evolving at 42, get earthquake and evolve at 52? a little bit more training around koga and sabrina to get the levels and youll end up at 54 or 55 in giovannis gym with earthquake to obliterate him, forget the poison point entirely. couldve shaved off a good 20 minutes or so maybe

Frustratingly slow despite it's incredible Attack. It felt like it was just a few points too slow for almost every key battle! Overall, it feels like FRLG significantly higher level to beat due to deeper opponent movepools and less exploitable AI. Also noticed the Rock Blast for Misty strategy a lot of others have mentioned, that would make her a lot more consistent in a future optimized playthrough. Another thing you should consider is the Sevii Islands for runs that need additional training. The dialogue does take a bit of time, but it gives access to more relatively high leveled trainer Pokemon, an extra Rare Candy, and the Move Reminder.

For misty you did get rather unlucky but statistically viable. The way to figure it out is more looking at the odds of it not happening so in this case there is a 7/10 chance not to paralyze. You had 10 fails when you went back to misty and won on your 11th attempt 1-((7/10)^1) means that there is a 98% chance you would have had a paralysis by then. In comparison after just 3 tries you would have had almost a 66% chance or better than a coin flip. Oh the joy of statistical probability

From a design perspective, Brock is suppose to teach you the importance of the difference between physical and special moves. With the three starters, you should have Ember, Bubble or Vine Whip for Brock. Even Ember which isn't super effective is going to be doing a lot more damage than most normal moves. It's also a place to learn the importance of the type chart if you didn't get to learn that earlier. However, I agree that is quite possible to learn the wrong lessons from Brock. If a player isn't willing to experiment with either new moves or new pokemon, they face quite like a grind, although usually not as bad as what happened to Rhydon at Misty. Alas the solo play style duplicates this behaviour.

Am I going nuts or did Scott not go over why he went for Squirtle over Bulbasaur? I expect Bulbasaur would be the harder battle since you end up getting double intimidated by Gyarados and Arcanine.

Considering the main weaknesses that cause you grief are special and the critical outspeeds were narrow, I think a Careful or Jolly nature would have helped a fair bit in this case.

So I think the cloyster range where it did not get the one shot was because you saved 2 more rare candies, putting rhydon only at level 68 instead of 70. This did give you two more candies at Agatha so idk, take that how you will lol

For the Misty fight, is it possible the reason it took so long to get a Paralysis that your muscle memory was so good that you were consistently hitting the exact same frames on each reset?

Maybe a tip for a future Rhydon playthrough, a special defense or speed boosting nature could probably really work in it's favor. Either moving first more, or living a hit better. Maybe something to consider.

Nature is a 10% modifier 30 base something only goes up to 33 It's best used to make the pokemon better at what he's good at But it's true that rhydon just needed a few speed point multiple time so.. maybe

@@ryomaanime4563 Remember that natures have a bigger impact than you think. While of course 10% of a low stat is not great, it's still something. Maybe just enough to outspeed some things or to live mainly Starmie's water pulse more consistently.

@Siskquatch
@Siskquatch 8 ай бұрын
Fair. I was primarily thinking about the Nidorina there. The main issue is the amount of time poison has to chip away at your health. Though considering the rest of the play through, the extra grinding may have been worth it anyway.
