Abandoned Mine Exploring with Tom and Julie

Abandoned Mine Exploring with Tom and Julie

Күн бұрын

While out driving the Jeep near Rhyolite, we spotted a waste rock pile high up in the mountains. There is no road to this gold mine, so we made the hike up to the area where there are a few mine workings. This area is very rugged and steep. Once there, we entered the mine and found some cool drifts and ladders going down to a lower level. We climbed the ladders and explored the levels, then made the hike back down the mountain. It was another fun day of mine exploring for us, and we hope you enjoy the video!
Here is a link to a video of some nearby mines that we think you will enjoy:

Considering the rain of last winter, you must be seeing much more vegetation growth, flowers than normal for desert areas. Maybe once in a lifetime rain and desert bloom. I'm in coastal Oregon, so you videos show an area I've only passed thru. I use to hike 20-30 miles a week before the knees went. I don't like downhill either. It's the toughest on knees.

Another exciting exploration and happy ending! Safety first. Yes, it was a Klondike Tradition set by Clarence Berry, the Klondike King of Dawson. When he was downhole in his drift mine he always had a coffee can full of nuggets next to his cabin door and a sign that said he was busy but please take a slug to show others the wonderful bounty for all to share. In the Arctic District, there is nothing more welcome than a visitor and even a low flying airplane was cause to run out in your shorts and wave! That someone will shoot you for trespassing is so far from the truth. Whenever I left the mine I would tape a paper plate to door that said “ You are at Davis Creek Mine. This cabin is yours and there is firewood and food and a half drum with gold concentrates for your panning enjoyment. Please leave this shelter as you found it and always leave a gift of whiskey or tobacco if you can. There is first aid kit and if you are in dire need you can light the storage shed on fire and Alyeska Pipeline Pump Station 6 and there is a fully charged VHF radio On wall with instructions to notify Alyeska Pipeline Security at Pump Station 5. They will send a helicopter in 16 minutes!

I also find the downhill harder like Julie. If you let it give you just a bit to much speed, you can find yourself running and hope you can find a spot to slow or might need to do a controlled crash to keep from going over an edge. Going down is a like a (hopefully) controlled fall. You both keep it slow and make sure each step is solid. Wonderfull veiw. If it was a mountain lion cub, the paws would also be large for its size. That makes me also think, hope your packing! God bless.

Once again another great video. Your video says Rhyolite, is this part of the Bullfrog mining district? I was there a few months and the road in looked familiar. 10:11

Yes, this is just behind Bonanza Mountain and very near the Montgomery-Shoshone mine. I believe it's all part of the Bullfrog District, although the Bullfrog Mine is a mile or two to the west from here. Thanks for commenting, Joe!👍😎

I always feel nervous when seeing someone use skip ladders. Always feels to me the rungs will push out backwards.

Hi Mark. The old mine ladders, whether skip or manway, always need to be assessed carefully before using them. In this mine, some of the manway ladders had fallen off, so the skip was the only option. I know what you're saying about the skip rungs pushing off the back.I've never had any big problems with ladders. Once in a while a rung will break, or a whole section gets a bit loose. You just have to hang on tightly. Thanks for the comment!👍😎

I think of the people who did all this work, cutting and moving all that rock. What became of them? Was it worth it? How long did the average mine operate for?
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Ай бұрын
Hi James. This particular area was mined starting in the very early 1900s. Many mines were worked on and off for decades depending on the price of the mineral or metal being mined, the current owner and their strategies, the changing and newer technologies, and other factors. Most of the times the miners were just paid workers making a daily wage. So, it's not a simple question of whether it was worth it or not. Some of these mines operated all the way up to the 1970s when open strip mining became the most efficient way to extract minerals and metals from the ground. That is how almost all big mines operate today. Thanks for the comment!😁

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Over here in Ireland many must have travelled to the USA to search for gold. Common conversation often involves 'striking it lucky/ rich' or 'staking a claim' to something or other. Indeed, in 1968 the famous band The Dubliners had a hit with Muirsheen Durkin, a song about a young lad heading over to the California gold rush. (It is on KZfaq). Please be Very Careful in your explorations.

You're welcome, James. Yes, there are many stories about striking it rich. More realistic is that it's a lot of work for not a lot of pay. One of my friends from Minneapolis just took his band to Ireland for some shows. They are called the Belfast Cowboys. I will look for the Dubliners song. Thanks for the information!👍🎸

It's not really high by mountain standards except that the lowest point in the country is only about eight miles from here.
