One of my favorite pieces of Black Film ephemera ever. In the early 1980s we saw the transition from film to video, which meant an increase in the amount of information captured, but a (relative) decrease in quality. I am a big fan of photographer Jamel Shabazz (i reference A Time Before Crack the way some people look at the Bible), so this to me was a great discovery. It captures a group of young people, reflecting their attitudes and fashion and evokes many personal memories.

Mr. Washington's moustache should have had its own public access interview show. More seriously, this channel is a brilliant resource for Black film and video ephemera. Great music, too. Really impressive, encouraging, touching. Thanks.

This is crazy.. I didn't remember being recorded.. We were Totally Nu Wave.. Duckie Boy, Van, Monica, Candace, Tony, Ernest, Rodney, Rossi & Clay.. We had a few more members but that was us.. Every week the local dance crews from around the city would meet at Rhythm Skate and perform routines. We were 16 back then and most of still are in contact as of December 2019.. Great memories there.. Rappers came to Rhythm Skate before they were famous.. LL Cool J did "I Need a Beat" T L.A. Rock "Its Yours" Luv Bug Starski "You Gotta Believe" Dougy Fresh ( before Dougie Fresh as we know today) did a song called "Human Beat Box" the list is crazy.. I remember Janet Jackson was there too.. Lots of great memories. Thank you for sharing a part of my life with the world Clay.....

The Baltimore I grew up loving! Rhythm Skate opened my 8th grade year just blocks from my Middle School. When young Black kids wanted to emulate Fraternities and Sororities instead of thugs and hoes!

SHAKE N BAKE Family Fun Center in B'more had a bowling alley AND skating rink. I drove from DC to Baltimore at least twice week while also skating at three other skating rinks the rest of the week. I'll admit if a guy asked me if wanted to skate couples, I immediately had to see what kind of skates he had on. If his boots were tan, had orange wheels and a number on the back of the boot, I knew he couldn't skate so I just politely tell him no thank you. HA!
