It's amazing what Joe Louis went through, fought his hardest, did his best in everything. Became a world heavyweight champion, fought for his people, his countrymen, donate so much away. He was done so wrong by the IRS. The man should have retired after his rematch against Walcott, but had to another 10 more fights and left this world without being able to pay for his own funeral. Pains me to hear this about Joe when he was an honorable warrior, never gloat over a fallen opponent, never engaged in fixed fights, living and fighting clean.

If we didn’t have Joe Louis, boxing wouldn’t be nearly as technical. He showed us how to box PROPERLY. Efficient footwork, perfect balance, threw everything with his body, and had the best technique and form in boxing. He really innovated the game.

A couple weeks before the bout Joe Louis was ordered to visit the white house where Franklin D. Roosevelt told him, "Joe, we need your muscles to beat Germany." Louis later admitted, "I knew i had to get Schmeling good. I had my own personal reasons and the whole damned country was depending on me." June 22, 1938 with 71,000 people in Yankee Stadium Joe Louis met Max Schmeling and millions of folks around the world was listening by radio in English, German, Spanish and Portuguese. Here in America factories, businesses, families, everyone huddled around radios, all of America stopped for a moment. Schmeling managed to throw only two punches entire fight. Joe landed blows to his head and body that could knock down a brick wall. Max screamed when Joe literally broke his back. With the world on the precipice of WWII, Louis hammered Hitler's symbol of Aryan supremacy with his 1938 destruction of Germany's Max Schmeling. It is considered among the most important moments in sports history. Joe Louis championship reign lasted 140 consecutive months from 1937 to 1949. He was victorious in 25 consecutive title defenses. Amateur career 50-3 with 43 knockouts, professional career 69-3 with 52 knockouts and his historical contributions towards racial equality was unprecedented. Joe volunteered to enlist in United States Army January 10, 1942 and during a charity bout Louis said, "We'll win cause we're on God's side." The publicity made Louis widely popular stateside, even outside the world of sports. He was released October 1, 1945 as a hero. Joe was buried in Arlington National cemetery with full military honors.

The last part of the video almost made me cry

Joe Louis was the most powerful and fastest punching heavyweight boxer in ring history. His great hand speed, especially in combination, was awesome to behold. He had a powerful jab, threw every punch perfectly and with wasteless accuracy. His right cross, thrown short and straight, was sheer dynamite. The "Brown Bomber" never ducked anyone as his record 25 title defenses attests to. Of those 25 successful defenses, 21 were won by knockout, 17 of those were ten counts! 5 in the first round! He also knocked out six men who held the Heavyweight Championship of the World. From 1934 to 1949, when he first retired as champion, his record was 60-1 with 51 knockouts. He held the Heavyweight Championship for a record of nearly 12 years.

I'm 64 years old, and in the 60's 70's as a kid Joe Lewis was the boxer who I heard my parents rave about..

I live with Joe Louis son . not the not the son he had with his first wife . but the son he and his 3rd wife Martha and Joe Louis raised, who I officially consider my forever family .I currently live with son of Joe Louis junior owner of Joe Louis southern kitchen restaurant located in Detroit Michigan. Didnt know how much his father held such an amazing title and had such a big impact on society(when i first met him ) till he told me , to look up some documentarys on KZfaq about his father and to really do some research about it . and boy I could definitely assure you how impressed and feel inspired and touched by his fathers story. You dont come across a famous boxer son that held the champion title for almost 20 years, advocated for the army as far as investing inn supplies and equipment to best serve our lovely country during hardship war that was going on . he was the first African American that was basically allowed to participate in golf and made it accessible for other African Americans to compete in golf tornamets which is also very inspiring . also to mention he first came out in the 30s -50s , I was born in 1999 and let me tell you, alot of my generation lacks the history within sports , life events, not understanding the hardship hurt and pain and lacking the knowledge of what was goimg on during that time in America . Society was so different back then you could tell by the authenticity of one who was raised during this error rather verses someone raised during this time error ) this generation lacks authenticity, growth in knowledge. And I could go down the list forever and hell u could even include the music on top of everything my generation lacks. My roommate, Joe Louis BarrowJr. Has mentioned to me one day to watch this documentary and wow I am impressed with how his father was such a role model and inspiration during the time he boxed and held that title and made other opportunities possible for him , "in a white mans world". . Joe Louis story shoould be taught in school as far as being bought up durim black history month and much to be mentioned and told about his story to this generation of children . I know he has a street named after him in Manhattan . but there should be a holidat for Joe Louis to honor his legendary legacy. maybe then kids now a days ; they could Learn somethin. But anyways shout out to my roommate Joe Louis Jr . and I advise everyone to go check out his restaurant in Detroit. They serve delicious food and its almost impossible to get in always have to make a prior reservation. Lucky for me, I know the owner of Joe Louis southern kitchen located in Detroit and is in charge of his father Joe Louis estate. Not much is mentioned about his son ( my roommate ) but he sure is making his come up and making his way up to success, a lot of opportunities is opening up in his life for success currently. He has a great amount of perseverance and drive to his goals in life Joe Louis Barrow Jr. ( Joe Louis son) my roommate , Is such an outgoing individual always business oriented, always ten steps away from his original plan and overall a great father and friend of mine and I will always appreciate the fact of meeting Joe Louis Jr. And learn about his father's legacy and trials and tribulations he had to face during his time living . I can't say it enough , like I've mentioned earlier ,Joe Lois story should be told, preached, taught , or celebrated, his story is very inspirational .

Joe Louis, the perfect fighting machine, contained the best attributes of many of the Heavyweight Greats. He was the best in combination of speed, power, and punching accuracy. He executed every punch perfectly. He had the perfect jab. The "Brown Bomber" was a master place puncher. He kept constant pressure on his opponents. He had great come from behind ability and heart. A master strategist when prepared properly. Louis had the longest title reign and most defenses of any champion in any weight class. Joe Louis was the Best Heavyweight Ever!

An excellent video on perhaps the greatest heavyweight ever. My late father saw Louis fight when he first came up to the pros...he was very young at the time, but he never forgot how fast Louis was, and how much of a murderous hitter he was. It's a terrible shame that the country he fought for treated him so poorly. He may have died a pauper, but he'll be remembered as a king.

Joe Louis said how he would fight Ali Feb.1967 Ring mag, "The kid has speed and there’s no one around to outbox him, and the opponent who tries is in his grave, especially in the middle of the ring. I’d see to it that Clay didn’t stay in ring center. No. He’d be hit into those ropes as near a corner as I could get him. If he stayed on the ropes he would get hurt. Sooner or later he’d try to bounce off, when he did he would get hurt more. I’d press him, cut down his speed, and bang him around the ribs. I’d punish the body. “Kill the body and the head will die”, Chappie use to tell me. It figures. Sooner or later he’d forget about that face of his and he would start dropping that left hand like he did against Mildenberger and Chuvalo. Those fellows got their openings by accident, and fouled it up. I would work for it and wouldn’t reckon to miss when it arrived. Cassius Clay is a nice boy and a smart fighter. But I am sure i would have licked him."

This is a fine tribute for one of the very top list of greatest fighters ever, JOE LOUIS! A true great American, a fighter with a lot of power in his hands & even greater power in his heart. A champion that bled for his country & in the end, he was looked after by those who truly were his friends. The most beautiful thing about this story, was his friendship with Max Schmeling. To the USA at that time n to Joe, Max was an enemy that needed to be destroyed. Max was a gentleman like Joe & a good fighter himself. After Joe beat him in the second fight and hurt him bad, Max & Joe became great friends. When the end came for Joe, none other than his great friend Max flew in from far to bid goodbye to his dear friend Joe Louis. Two names that should never be forgotten in the history of boxing. They reunited in heaven & I bet their friendship is stronger than ever. Two brothers, as we all are to each other in God's truth! 🙏🏼👍

I am a middle aged black man who loves the sport of boxing; Most importantly the classics. Ali- Spinks 1 is my earliest memory. After that fight I've seen all of late 70s and 80s classics. I remember that savage beating Ali took from Holmes as a kid. I remember how he never went down but how sad I was for him. I met Ali years later at a signing and saw with my own eyes the result of the wars he had been in; It was humbling. Due to a brief freindly relationship with James Lights Out Toney who dated my next door neighbor when I was a youngster. He was a local up and commer so I got to go to some local matches. So boxing has found me even when I didn't seek it out. It is a part of my fabric of hard work and perseverance. It is what gets me up every morning to go out and make a living for my family. As I grow older with probably more years behind me that the ones left in front. I romance over the history of those fights and the ones that came before even those. Being from the Detroit area Joe Louis has always been a symbol of pride and toughness. Your narration of this video and others on your channel brings that pride to tears of reverence for these men who came before me. I represent their spirit everyday in life because life itself is a fight and there is no running from it. Excellent work as always. 👊🏾

I’m 32 now but I’m glad that I at least know that I had a relative who helped fought for the country and a heavyweight champion. Our hometown courthouse built a statue of him years ago to honor his legacy and hometown. After watching this, I drove to the house where he was born & raised. His great great family members still live there today in LaFayette, Al off of hwy 50 on a long dirt road. My mom’s side always talked about him growing up but I didn’t understand who he was to us until I was about 25.
