Batty Moss (Ribblehead) viaduct is a really iconic landmark surrounded by the three peaks, Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough (which can all be seen in the video) and the weather was perfect today. I have wanted to film a steam special crossing the viaduct for a while and was fortunate to catch the Fellsman pulled by LMS Class 5MT 4-6-0 no 45231 'The Sherwood Forester' today.
The music is rather different to my usual choice, but I have used it because of the lyrics. It is from a 1971 album called "Songs of the broad acres" by Mike Donald - A Skipton folk singer who sadly died young - and is called "Settle to Carlisle railway" and it hints at a fair bit of the history of the line's construction in the 1870s.

Very nice professional looking video. As an Irish 'navvy' myself living in Chapel le Dale, beside the Church in the early 1980s, it was gratifying to see that the local Church Community had erected a memorial plaque to the Ribblehead navvies, mostly Irish immigrants, interred without headstones in the plot of ground opposite the Church. The exact number interred in the graveyard is unknown, but local historian / neighbour Margaret Bargh believed it to be most of the hundred who died from various causes at the Ribblehead site and encampment. I worked at the Ingleton granite quarry, employed as a blast hole driller, dumper truck driver and crusher operator. This is not the large ICI quarry, but a smaller one about half a mile up the road. We crushed railway ballast. Supposedly some of the hardest granite in Britain. It certainly took a few truckloads of ammospex to blow the 90 foot face.

A friend took me there in 2013. You don't really get the feel of the place until you're standing beside it. He took a picture of me by it, and I was just a little dot at the bottom of the arch. I can't even imagine the effort it took to make it back then.

Mike Donald visited our school in Settle for the railway centenary (in the late '70s) and a group of us learned that song. Recognised it instantly.

I didn’t know it was single track over the viaduct. It is an absolute spectacular structure. Seen it many times and been blown away by it each time I’ve visited. There’s a calming atmosphere there. Anyone who hasn’t visited should do. There’s a train station (called Ribblehead just immediately south of the viaduct and on the road between Ingleton and Hawes at the station road end is a pub. So what’s stopping you?

Single track over the viaduct is a relatively recent thing, it's to reduce weight on the structure, which is too expensive to reinforce the foundations or replace.

First class Stuart. REALLY stable platform. (No pun intended) Glad you didn't go for the full 'amateur director's shot' by flying your gizmo through the smoke and steam, that could well have beggarded up your investment! Did you know that when Jan was investigating her family history, she discovered that one of her line (still no pun intended) had had been involved in the building of the Settle Carlisle? She put together quite a lurid history. Next time we meet, she can tell you what she discovered. As for Mike Donald, I hadn't heard the name, but really sounds interesting. I see he recorded a vinyl with Bob Siddall called 'A bug's eye view' which now seems to be almost impossible to find. Best wishes to you all.

***** Did you come across this website Alan with mp3 versions from vinyl of his songs? I love "Land of the old and grey" as well, it says so much. I also think "More like Blackpool each day" is really funny, also quite poignant baring in mind it was written over 40 years ago. www.rafacyprus.co.uk/

It's a song by a Skipton based singer, Mike Donald, from his album "Songs of the Broad Acres" and is just called "The Settle Carlisle railway". Sadly he died very young many years ago. I have the original LP but its badly scratched so I found an mp3 file of it which someone had ripped from their vinyl and uploaded, then edited it in Audacity to clean it up... can't track down where i found it now!'

+Nigel C Ingle Its a Yuneec Q500+ Typhoon. Designed from the outset to be used as a camera platform, rather than a quad with camera attached, so it deliberately has smoother flight carachteristics and slower responses than other quads like the DJI Phantom. It is also slightly bigger at 500mm (as opposed to 350mm) which again helps the stability.

kitestu I’ve got the Typhoon H, but I’ve yet to film anything worth sharing. I just can’t seem to work it. I was hoping to film a tour crossing the viaduct at Arnside, but when I got it in the air it wouldn’t turn towards the viaduct! I then lowered it to the ground and after landing it flipped over! Camera ended up lose, but everything else seems to be OK.

+pofrani these are the Google maps co-ordinates for Ribblehead viaduct www.google.co.uk/maps/@54.2125542,-2.3658958,4471m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en-GB and its easy to get to by car or train. As for locals tolerating quads, its in the middle of a moor so as long as you don't buzz the many walkers who frequent this area you should be fine. The day I filmed this there were hordes of spectators on the banking to the North of the viaduct (well probably 50 or 60) waiting for the steam train so I just kept well away from them so the quads noise wasn't intrusive or i didn't land on them if there was a crisis. Read the CAA guidelines and stick to them and you'll be fine. www.quadcopters.co.uk/ekmps/shops/quadcopters/resources/Other/caa-general-rules-for-drones.pdf
@pofrani
@pofrani 8 жыл бұрын
+kitestu Thanks. I'll definitely give this a go. Already aware of CAA rules (50m distance. I don't think this place can be classed as busy for a 150m distance rule to apply would it?!) Last question - do you know where I can get the timetable for the steam train? What steam train it is? or from which station it originates from?)
