I know its a pain to set up these mic test videos, but the in my opinion the Royer 121 is in the sweet spot compared to the VR2 right in front of the sound hole, which created a bit of boominess.

A very worthy bit of playing to show mic response
@willpopemusic3 жыл бұрын
Really liking the ribbon warmth but with that extra rounded top end clarity in the V2!!

When you have passive microphones included in the comparison you need to mention the Pre-amp being used as that will affect the sound of the passive microphones much more than the actives...
@thepalalias4 жыл бұрын
The Royer is so much darker/rounder than the others. If someone wants a brighter sound with that polar pattern, why not a figure 8 condenser instead? Out of those 3 ribbons, I’d reach for the Royer every time I wanted a ribbon sound - the others sound to much like condensers.

I don't understand why people put two mics 3" closer or farther from a sound hole and call it a "mic comparison." If you're comparing mics, the mics must be the only variable.
@jcnash023 жыл бұрын
So there’s only one performance, hence making the microphone the only variable.

@@jcnash02 A few inches can change the sound drastically though.

I had hoped as I watched that theyd reposition the guitar to be dead-on-same for each mic... but no. all 3 are clearly good mics, but this is a comparison of POSITION more than mic character... sigh
@lukeGGlee5 ай бұрын
@@soundscenesdcmusicmedia2709 yea it would have been better if the mics were placed on an amp itself

The VR2 sounds most detailed and neutral, has a clean but deep low end, and has the most extended and detailed high end. It's the most hifi sounding among the three microphones. To be honest it sounds a bit too neutral and hifi by ribbon microphone standards. The R121 sounds detailed too, but not as detailed as the VR2. It has a honky mid-range that makes it sound boxy. It also exhibits a choppy low end response, and a mild smear in the high end. I know it's a iconic microphone in the music industry, but in this comparison it sounds rather lackluster when compared to the cheaper VR2. The X1R has some of the neutrality of the VR2 but it exhibits severe distortion and buzz in the high frequencies, and has poor low end response. Due to that it sounds the worst among the three.

I know the sound may very according to the mic position... true... but... considering the price difference between the Royer r121 thats costs around $1500 and the Voodoo Vr2 costs around $500. I truly believe the voodoo out run the Royer not only in cost but in performance as well... it sounded more colerfull and vivid the the Royer... so clearly the winner here is the Voodoo vr2 without a doubt! Me at least will save this extra $1000 for something else insted!!! thanks for the video!
@RyanRenteria3 жыл бұрын
i thought the 121 sounded better, but id go with the voodoo because of the price. it really sounds pretty comparable to the royer, which is more than twice the price of the voodoo
@orryfishburne53263 жыл бұрын
I actually liked the voodoo better too. I liked all of them, but the real competition is between the voodoo and the r121. I would like to see a comparison with all three with the exact placement to rule out more variables, but i thought it still was a good comparison and i really enjoyed the tone of the Voodoo. Solid mic for a fraction of the cost of the R121. Price combined with performance, The Voodoo is a clear winner for me too.

Another fan of the Voodoo here. It just sounded a bit more magical to my ears!
@AyoToine9 жыл бұрын
i loved the voodoo ...i would roll off a little of the bass because of its full range pick up and I love the X1R...the royer i feel isn't worth 1,000+ dollars more $700
@bestevaer19777 жыл бұрын
Tha's the first thing in noticed, before single note was played. It made the comparisso harder, but if you're aware of this, it's still useful!

why would you use a Plastic Ovation... ?

So true. All you can hear is that these microphones would probably sound great on a less shitty guitar.

it is pretty strange to test great mics on just this thing.

Nice comparison. Thanks. They all sound a little tubby and might be better pulled back a bit. With EQ I think they all could work well.

I thought the Royer was by far better in all cases than the other mics.

the better comparison would have been an electric guitar comparison to really compare that high end control
@lolaa22007 жыл бұрын
the low E string is not in tune !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The royer is overall flatter more natural response and would work well on classical music and some jazz trio stuff. But its also boring on steel string guitar. The royer has that magic special something where the mid range has space and note definition. The se voodoo has a sstrong bass spike and its a less clear sound with a jumbled confused almost sounding mid range. The se con. Had clear treble with a hi-definition sound like a 90s cd player. It had a good balanced response though and was clearer then the v. The royer clearly wins but its also dead boring to listen to guitar through. Guitar sounds better with some hype and no annoying frequencies. Have you tried the AT4081 active ribbon, I think its better than these.
@WOB10109 жыл бұрын
+Brian Cullen "The royer clearly wins but its also dead boring to listen to guitar through." ??? No. It's lacking in comparison. The VooDoo is the winner.
@soundknight9 жыл бұрын
+William Gabbert sorry if my apparent contradiction thru you, the royer has the most balanced and life like sound but it is boring where as the se has a jumbled sounding mid response (cheaper components).
@matineemartyr388 жыл бұрын
+Brian Cullen It's all about your preferred taste and positioning the microphone accordingly. The SE VR1 is better placed slightly further away from source than is the Royer. For me the SE has a singing, liquid tone whereas the Royer is drier - less interesting. It would be interesting to know the impedance of the amp input for the passive Royer - all of these things play a part in the use of ribbon microphones, and the fact that the VR1 is directly opposite the sound hole which accounts for it showing more bass, the Royer is not.
@soundknight8 жыл бұрын
+Matinee Martyr yeah thats a good point especially impeadance on passive royer.
@WOB10108 жыл бұрын
There isn't a hill of beans difference between a Royer and any of the cheap ribbon mic's (that have had a transformer upgrade).... No Top end. The VooDoo is in a class of its own.
@jasonsgroovemachine8 ай бұрын
None of them hid the fact that those guitars really sound artificial. The Royer brought out how crap those guitars sound. The VR2 hid it a little bit, but not much. The X1R really got across how out of tune you were.

Voodoo all the way in this case.
@MrJmojomАй бұрын
The X1R is best bang for Buck Ribbon. You're comparing a $220 mic to a $1500 mic and it's holding its own. I touch of EQ and who's gonna know in a mix. X1R wins.....

Could have been 3 of the same mics in that set up and there'd likely be an audible difference.

3 different microphones in 3 different positions. Can't be a true comparison but nice looking video though.

Absolutely accurate!! 100% agreed. One inch to the side and you get another sound.

....it wouldn't be a true comparison either if you put them in the exact same position, but had to do 3 separate takes. Compromises always have to be made in these kinds of videos.
