Dusty and Ric were two of the best, if not the best talkers in the wresting business. They matched up so well with each other. One wore expensive clothes and rode limousines and jet planes and the other was a son of a plumber. The rich vs the common man.

This was my grandfather's favorite wrestler when I was growing up, and he quickly became mine as well. My grandparents were some of the first to get cable in our area and the NWA was my choice for wrestling. So many great stars and loved when it was just a podium, an interview, and about 20ft away the ring. No flashy lights, no pyro, just good old fashioned "wrastlin".

The WCW was the king of interviews. I used to go to the Columbus, GA TV station for the 2 pm Saturday show. They did live interviews after matches. Then, head to TBS for the evening shows. I watched that in my Ft. Benning quarters. The TV show was free. Every other week, there was a live event at the Columbus arena. A lot of fun seeing the greatest the Crockett family had on their rosters.

Dusty was probably the most 'influential' wrestler ever, because he helped and inspired Ric so much, and was also the guy who inspired Hogan to get into the business. Hulk said basically he copied Dusty's whole style of wrestling, and first wanted to be a wrestler because he would see Dusty at his local arena back in the day. So the two biggest wrestlers of all time Hogan and Flair both built their career on Dusty...

What those two men did back in the NWA days in the 80's still cannot be duplicated or beaten. Wwf stuff at the time was pure garbage compared..still is. That to me was the absolute BEST when it came to mic work and ring action. I don't know how Dusty could go for an hour with Rick with all that extra weight, but, he did it. It was brilliant havin Rick with the title 90% of the time with Dusty chasing it cause we was all suckers tuning in every week to see if Dusty pulled it off. Best wrestling since I been watching in the 70's

My great grandfather was a huge Dusty fan and on the night my great grandfather passed, Dusty Rhodes faced Nicki (Dolph Ziggler) on RAW: Nov 20, 2006. It's something that I always think about. To my knowledge, Dusty had not appeared on WWE television in many years, let alone had an actual match until that night. Therefore, that night was a religious sendoff for me as the coincidence was far beyond anything my human mind can explain.

@@robertblackshear8963 To be honest in my original comment I wasn't considering the NWA as a factor as even though it was a bigger promotion back then it isn't really considered as such to many at this point in time due to many people not knowing how prevalent it was. Perfect example is that most people from my generation (I'm 32) barely remember the attitude era and only know about NWA from comments they hear wrestlers make on podcasts or in interviews. That's why in my first comment I was talking more about WCW and WWF.

In my honest opinion. As a life long wrestling fan. No 2 men could put more butts every 18 inches apart than Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes there wasn't an Arena in North Carolina that could hold the crowds they would draw when they were facing each other. It's sad that Bank Of America Stadium wasn't built back in the 80's because if it had been Flair and Rhodes would have sold it out multiple times over. I always tell people that when it came to wrestling there's no era better than the 80's.. I got the best of both worlds.. I grew up watching the best in the business and I also had the pleasure of growing up in the best wrestling territory as well having grown up in Hickory, NC I got the best of Jim Crockett Promotions.. There will never be another "Nature Boy" or "American Dream".
