Just the way he does it. Bangers followed by minimal stuff, cutting in and out of tracks (13:38), looping a single beat and beatmatching the next track in live (18:30), keeping that loop going in the background for 5 minutes and creating big moments just by the way he mixes (23:26), increasing the speed of the vinyl to create a sound effect (8:50), making a mistake and correcting it perfectly without turning down the fader (26:04), that string section (14:45), and playing Hansup at peaktime (24:25). In this half hour he puts more effort into his set than most DJ's do in a 6 hour set, and it takes balls of steel to do some of this stuff live. It's all there in the video, just watch how he mixes. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a masterclass in my opinion. If you gave other DJ's the same tracks they could never make it work like this, and for me, that's what makes it special. I've seen a lot of DJ's in my time and almost all of them play it safe. Villalobos never does, and I love that.

pete921 mate you've summed villalobos up perfectly there. given the recent hype around villalobos at cocoon in the park it seems not many people understand him like you explained above. it seems like for a lot of clubbers they just want 4/4 bangers with perfect (traktor) mixing and a deluge of huge drops. no subtlety, no great thought behind the mix, no risk.
