Homeless people had taken up residence in an abandoned warehouse, surrounded by an old fence. They had been living there for a long time, setting up rooms for themselves. Among the residents was Andy, a 29-year-old who had considered this place home for many years. He shared the modest shelter with 15 other people. Although conflicts arose, the vagrants remained united. There were no alcoholics or worse among them.
"Bob has already had a fever for three days straight. I'll get some medicine," Andy said firmly.
"They won't help us, we're treated worse than dogs!" another homeless man said hopelessly.
"That's not true! Volunteers are noble people who help us from the heart. Without them, so many of our people would be lost!" Andy trusted the volunteers and accepted their help. For many years, the center had been treating the homeless, providing them with food and shelter, although there weren't many sleeping spots available.
Many homeless people did not believe in selfless work and refused to accept help even in such situations.
Andy was more open and sociable, so many people in the city knew him. The volunteers treated him well, and even his close friend was among them. They had met Leila seven months ago when she worked in the kitchen for the homeless, serving hot lunches on plates. The girl sincerely treated every dirty and bad-smelling person who reached out for food, showing no disgust or aversion.
"Your work deserves respect," Andy once remarked when it was his turn to receive a portion of pea soup.
"Oh, no! I'm not doing anything special," she answered with a shy smile.
Leila did not seek praise or admiration. She believed she could help the underprivileged and never missed her shift.
Andy's neat appearance surprised her. He never neglected hygiene, regularly showered at the center, wore clean clothes, and helped his fellow unfortunates.
A certain bond quickly formed between the two young people. They communicated easily, often joked, and laughed. Leila brought books for Andy and shared her favorite music with him on her player. Sympathy was evident, but neither of them admitted it.
Leila's colleagues often noticed her glances at Andy and expressed concern, saying, "Leila, you don't need him. He's not a bad guy, but what future do you have with him? He needs to become a man first, find a stable job, and learn to live in society. What can he offer you?"
"I know," Leila sighed, "but that doesn't make it any easier. I'm drawn to him. I can't help it, even though I know it's not a good idea!"
When Andy arrived at the volunteer center, he was greeted with pleasure, asked about others, and shared news.
"This is an antipyretic; it should help," said the nurse. "It's very effective. What are his other symptoms?"
"He's been coughing and has a headache."
"You should have come to us sooner. I'll see what medication is left. And he should definitely get medical advice. By the way, a woman asked for you, go to Paul; he'll provide you more information."
Andy was intrigued. Strangers rarely showed interest in him, especially women. And frankly speaking, he had never been pursued by romantic love or had a serious relationship.
