Cricket was very popular in America before the civil war started in 1861. But Cricket declined in popularity and baseball rose in popularity during the American civil war between 1861 and 1865 for some very interesting reasons. But now cricket is rising again in popularity while baseball is declining in popularity in America.
The CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella and the CEO of Adobe are among other prominent Indians who have invested in Major League Cricket. In this video lets understand how rich and powerful Indians in US are making America a cricket crazy nation once again after almost 200 years.

One of the oldest cricket clubs in America is the Pennsylvania Cricket Club. Also the Harlem Cricket Club (Harlem of New York) were put up by John Getty when they came over to tour England. Getty, an American in love of all things British, had his own cricket field! The image of an extremely wealthy American putting up an American cricket team who were basically scraping by is unusual!

I'm glad to see support building for MLC. A couple of things: In the video, you said "Major Cricket League" a few times. It is actually Major League Cricket. The distinction is important, because there are imposters who brag about plans for Major Cricket League and confuse fans abroad. Also, the average IPL game time is actually much longer than the average MLB game time. Also, it's important to consider that while baseball popularity is slipping, it's still averaging about the same in per game attendance as the Indian Super League is. India Super League is Asia's top attendance football league. In MLB, each team plays 162 games per season, and so that's a lot of revenue just by ticket sales alone. Throw in the broadcast deals, and the average MLB team is worth over $2b USD. That means that just 6 MLB teams (out of 30) are worth more than the entire IPL. I say this not as a flex, but to point out the fact that our sports economy is much stronger, even with lesser viewers. Another thing to consider is those who created the myth that baseball was invented by Abner Doubleday in Cooperstown were actually baseball players and top cricketers in the USA at the time. I feel these men knew first hand the difficulty marketing cricket and hence came up with this scheme. Another very important thing: Cricket was actually quite popular in Philadelphia until the ICC formed and voted to exclude USA and Argentina. American Bart King, also a baseball player, is widely considered the best cricketer in history to never play test cricket, as he routinely took the wickets of top English and Australians and was even the top bowler in county cricket in England one summer. Cricket's enemy is so often its gatekeepers, and has been from the start. Let's hope that MLC can do what USA Cricket have had no interest in doing: Popularizing the sport throughout the mainstream USA instead of preserving it for expats.

the best part about the U.S. is the sports culture here loves all sports no matter what it is. I play baseball, and don't mind at all. I think there can be a market for both without really clashing against each other. Rugby is popular here and so is the NFL, there is no reason that cricket and baseball cannot coexist either.

Thank you for a wonderful summary of "American Cricket" and the upcoming US T20 season. Since your video, there have been major announcements, of course, the most exciting for me being the establishment of a San Francisco team linked with Victoria, my home state. In the meantime, incidentally, baseball has announced some major changes to speed up the game - proving to be very successful after just one month into the season - so it is not going to give its mantle as the American game without a fight.

Though I am not a Pakistani, I first thanks Pakistan Cricket Club team in Washington DC for giving me the opportunity to play for for few years in early 80's. It was a diverse team and our main Wicket Keeper was white American boy name Gus. Players in all teams are from all over the world and we had a wonderful time. Even the Indian Cricket team under the captaincy of Sunil Gavaskar came to Washington and played an exhibition game and both Indian and Pakistani embassies sponsor it like a family. Unlike those days, now a these days players are more advance and play in turf pitches. I am very happy to see how far the game came from those good old days and as an avid fan of cricket, I am very much thankful to those who are bringing cricket to this Nation. Wish you all the best.

You do get reviews in baseball. In the MLB each team is allowed 1 review. They have introduced a pitch timer to reduce the length of matches, this will start in the 2023 MLB season. I have heard American sports fans argue that runs should be as hard to score as possible The notion of 300-400 runs per game would be anathema to that philosophy. This is why most of them might ultimately choose baseball over cricket.

2:15 Good that you pointed that out. That's still 1 reason. Other reasons are the absence of professionalism back then in Cricket thanks to the attitude of Cricket administrators in England (similar attitudes towards professionalism in Rugby led to the Union & League split). Then of course it's the ICC (then Imperial Cricket Conference, now International Cricket Council) who after being founded in 1909 banned membership for countries not in the British Empire which also helped kill Cricket in not just US but also countries like Argentina.

T20 match lasting 3 hours is the biggest scam of Cricket 🙂 Baseball lasts 3 hours while t20 lasts more than 4 hours. ICC brags the t20 match to last 70 minutes per side with 10 minute break, but in practice we know that if a match starts at 7pm it is gonna end at least at 11:30 pm (e-g take the last t20 match of ipl). @WHT EVR Ready? I don’t think it’s even on their radar. Would Americans be opened to watching a game? Of course. The US is addicted to sports. Will Cricket ever become of anything in the US? Not at all. Youth boys Baseball, football & basketball begin at age 3. Soccer is big in youth sports as well. Elementary to High school years are competitive. College scholarships are rewards for too high school athletes. Drafting in the Major Leagues is the ultimate goal. Rugby & Lacrosse have gained attraction in recent years but nowhere near the top 4. Here is Philadelphia, The Union (major league soccer team in Philly) was in the championship against Los Angeles, but the city, as a whole, had no idea. Philly was going nuts over the Phillies (major League Baseball) being in their respective championship game. In conclusion: Americans are opened to watching a new sport (if they don’t have to pay) but the country is already saturated with the NFL, MLB, NBA & NHL year round (not including college football & basketball) to leave a mark.

Baseball is trash and Cricket is worse. I played baseball and soccer as a kid. In baseball I was a shortstop or center fielder depending on where the coaches wanted my glove. When I played soccer, I was the Goalkeeper. Years later, after I had completely stopped playing team sports - I was convinced by friends to play Lacrosse. Modern Lacrosse is a descendant of a Native American game, and is superior to American Football, baseball, soccer, cricket...all of them. Lacrosse is the fastest game on two feet. Field Lacrosse requires stamina like soccer, has hard hits like American Football and allows for spectacular passing and scoring like basketball. I would rather play off the bench at any position in Lacrosse than be a starter in another sport. I'd prefer to watch it as well. Come to the U.S or Canada and learn to love Lacrosse. The Commonwealth can keep Cricket to themselves.

I surmised that based on what you said throughout the video - and what you did not say - you know little to nothing about baseball other then a rumour you heard that baseball is losing popularity. Soccer was once popular in the USA but fell out of favor because Americans fell in love with sports that they developed (and maybe this too contributed to the USA's world-reknowed reputation for ingenuity and creativity). It's taken decades and tons of money and hard work to make soccer popular in the USA again. The USA was a melting pot before South East Asians came to this country. You would think that people who came to the USA in the pursuit of becoming proud American citizens would have more of an interest in learning about and experiencing for themselves uniquely American cultural activities like baseball but instead you are trying to manipulate and force down our throats something Americans gave up on a long time ago.

Thank you!! I understand his passion for his sport and wanting everyone else to enjoy it, especially in a country like the US. Unfortunately for him, that’s a pipe dream. Soccer has gained in popularity but that only a small portion of the population. Baseball will always be part of the American culture and for this guy to say Cricket can compete with that, is well, delusional. NFL, MLB, NBA & NHL play year round. XFL, USFL, MLS, golf, tennis and even rugby and lacrosse are 1000x more popular. Not including our college sports. I don’t care if people like our sports or not, but stop making assumptions into facts just because you wish it to be true. Also, learn about baseball before talking about it.

So the only way to make cricket popular in the U.S. is to disparage baseball? IF CRICKET IS TO GREAT IT CAN SUCCEED ON ITS OWN MERITS. Why do you need to disparage the best sport on the planet and one that I love? This stupid video turned me off immediately. Running down baseball is not the way to popularize cricket. This video really pissed me off. I was going to look into cricket, but no more.

Many cricket fans do like baseball too, as indeed do a number of cricketers. Guy's just made a wack video.

I went to watch the video because I was watching reaction videos of British guys learning sports in the US, so I thought I’d inform myself on cricket. But I 110% agree with everything you said! It actually got me way too defensive over baseball than I would ever normally be.

I think it would be a wishful thinking to suggest that America is soon going to become a cricketing crazy nation. The really is that the cricketing crazy people are of Indian and Pakistani descent, and it will remain so for a considerable time to come.

fact is cricket can't grow in country other than south asia , even excluding Bhutan & Maldives .. Basically its market is Akhand Bharat & never will go beyond this ... Probably it will be a dead sport before 2034 ..

There's a reason American sports haven't caught on worldwide...they suck. 😂 Cricket, football, rugby. Nothing is better on a warm Sunday than to spend it on a Cricket Pavilion with your friends, a few beers and sandwiches. It's a preview of heaven.
