Organist Richard Hills performs a selection of music from Ivor Novello's "The Dancing Years" on the 4 manual 57 rank 1938 original installation Compton organ of the Civic Hall, Wolverhampton, which was recently scrapped by Wolverhampton City Council (09/02/2019).
Richard was one of four organists playing for a fundraiser concert organised by Cannock Chase Organ Club in order to raise money for the COS's new Troxy Stepney installation. The organists were Cameron Lloyd, Paul Kirner, David Redfern, Damon Willets (on Piano) and Richard Hills.
The Compton at Wolverhampton Civic Hall was installed in 1938. It is suspended from the roof above the stage in two chambers and is entirely enclosed behind five sets of swell shutters. Compton claimed, "as a recital instrument, it is second to none in the Midlands.
In 2001 it went through a major refurbishment, however the entirety of the original voicing and ranks remained completely unaltered. It originally had a Compton Melotone unit to serve as the organs theatre devision. The melotone was removed in/around 1945. In the rebuild the chance was taken to add a brass Sax, Kinura and English Horn were added as well as a Moller tibia, to enable the organ to be better used for theatre organ concerts, as well as classical, and also for the organ to be used for dancing.
A full specification can be read below. The changes/additions to the specification made in 2001 are marked with an asterisk.

Do you know where the compton is now I thought the cannock organ society would have it especially as Steve Tovy was so involved with it. What a waist of another fine instrument

@@mrpreserve01 the contents of the chambers - pipes, chests, windlines etc etc are apparently sealed in plastic bags and have gone to landfill. The console - which some regard as "the organ" was not trashed but has been generously saved. Sort of like saving the shell of a famous Lancaster bomber after ripping out its innards, scrapping the engines etc....

Thanks for the info I would have thought that as the cannock organ society was so involved the council instead of sending the pipes ect to landfill it would have been given to the society as a gift. Do you know where the console is now ? The council should be ashamed to have done all this but that is councils for you and another fine instrument has gone forever. Steve Tovey will be turning in his grave no doubt !! PS Did the council ever give a reason for the disposal !!!

This has appeared on the cannock organ society web site have you seen it *** BREAKING NEWS*** It is with sadness that it was confirmed recently that the 4/57 Compton Concert organ which was originally installed and was still housed in the Wolverhampton Civic Hall has been scrapped. Due to "possible asbestos contamination" of the organ, the largest of its kind built by John Compton company, has already been scrapped as contaminated waste.

Just found this in the express & star from December 2018 Plans to restore Wolverhampton's historic organ to its former glory scrapped By Annabal Bagdi | Wolverhampton | News | Published: Dec 4, 2018 Plans to restore Wolverhampton's historic organ to its former glory have been scrapped after council bosses refused to pay the £2 million revamp fees. More than 6,200 pipes of the organ, which dates back to 1938, will be 'disposed' of after Wolverhampton Council claimed proposals were 'no longer financially viable'. But the Labour-led council has since been blasted for failing to move the iconic organ from its home before work at the 80-year-old Civic Halls began. Leader of the opposition Councillor Wendy Thompson said: "If the organ was removed before the asbestos work, the organ would still be in a good condition. "It's not just immensely disappointing, it's a sign of greater issues because it's now, yet again, another example of Wolverhampton Council not taking proper care of public money and assets. "I think many people in Wolverhampton care about history. I'm sure they will wish more care had been taken with it, and more thought." The council revealed plans to remove the organ from its home in the roof of the Grade II-listed Civic Hall two years ago. The organ, which was built by British firm John Compton and Company, needed to be moved to enable better ventilation for fire safety and increase stage space as part of the Civic Halls refurbishment. It has 6,241 pipes, which range from one-and-a-half inches to 16 feet in height. Further investigation during the works uncovered the pipes were in poor condition but now plans have had to be scrapped due to 'staggering' costs and no possibility of funding from the Heritage Lottery. Historic England has no objection on heritage grounds to dispose of the pipes, as approved by planning officials, the council said. But the council is reviewing options to preserve the organ console. Councillor John Reynolds, the council's cabinet member for city economy, said: "We are in the process of carrying out a sensitive refurbishment of Wolverhampton’s historic Civic Halls. “Working closely with Historic England, we have looked at all the options available to us with the organ but unfortunately this is the only one that makes financial sense and we are really disappointed we are unable to restore it. “The Civic Halls are internationally recognised and popular among UK audiences and the entertainment industry, attracting very large audiences. “Increasing the space above the stage at the Civic Hall will enable it to accommodate bigger productions including touring groups, which the region cannot currently attract. “There is huge potential for bringing new audiences from across the West Midlands to live events and music, festivals, the arts, culture and night life. “This in turn means even more visitors to Wolverhampton city centre and the wider sub-region resulting in the creation of more jobs in the local economy.”

The mindless destruction of this instrument by the local authority must rank as one of the greatest acts of civic vandalism in recent memory. Those who sanctioned this are not fit to hold public office and should, if such laws exist, be held accountable for what they have done. it is very difficult to express this in moderate and acceptable language!!

lectocom Have only just found this clip. I was born in Manchester in 1943, but we moved to Wolves in '46 and I grew up there. I also loved this organ, and the one at the old Gaumont Cinema. I migrated to Aussie in 1965 and here in Ballarat VIC we have the Compton from the old Odeon Warrington. Wonderful wonderful instruments. If only I could play like Mr Hills! Homesick? Yes... but isn't it marvellous that we can see these things so far away, and after all these years. Best wishes, Phil.

According to an article in the local Express & Star newspaper, dated 08/02/2019 all organ pipes have been taken to a "contamination landfill facility" even after offers of help to restore them (free of charge) were made to Wolverhampton council. It appears a basic lack of understanding by the council, of what constitutes a pipe organ, has led to this sorry state of affairs. A council spokesman has justified their actions by claiming the organ has not been scrapped, because the console is being preserved by an (un-named) organ society! As someone was quoted as saying, it's like sending a priceless, rare car to the scrapyard, but claiming it's OK, because the steering wheel was saved!

Brilliant! I had the privilege of seeing Richard live some years ago at the ‘Tonic Cinema’ Compton, Bangor Co Down. Although the cinema had long been demolished the organ had been rescued and installed in a local school. Sadly, I have since learned the school moved to new premises and the ‘powers that be’ no longer wanted the organ. I believe it’s in storage somewhere.

What a magnificent performance by Richard. And not a sheet of music in sight also I have always been a fan of Compton organs since the days of the late Dudley Savage at the ABC cinema in Plymouth for his radio programmes on BBC Radio 2 when it was such a success until the revolution which has driven so many listeners away to CLASSIC FM. When will the BBC realise it is the licence fee payers who should be more involved in choosing what THEY require to be available for their £ 159pa.

I think the pistons appear large because the picture is slightly distorted - the organist also appears very slim. It would seem that a 16:9 ratio recording has been compressed to 4:5 . I have played this clip on a TV and adjusted the picture ratio to get a correct view of organ and organist. None of this however detracts from the wonderful music !

The organ hasn't been turned into a theatre organ. The organ is dual purpose, it can be used as a theatre organ or a classical organ. It originally had a melotone which served the theatre organ side but this was removed a few years after the organ was installed. We added a Tibia Clausa, Brass Saxaphone, Kinura and English Horn. As it says in the description, the original voicing and ranks are exactly as they were installed by Compton.

+Rick Miller Not directly from the Compton factory. One, the Ex Glasgow Paramount (4/10) has made it over recently and is now in the home of John Rust in Indiana. It's undergoing quite a few changes, as was expected, so it's not entirely original, however, still sound's like a Compton, and it has a melotone, something unique to Comptons. Compton did send out instruments to Egypt and Portugal. Over the years, Comptons have found there way to Holland, Spain, Canada and Australia.

Much enjoyed hearing this -- so unlike the Arnold Richardson broadcasts on the BBC of classical organ music! One query: is the travel downwards of each key to obtain pipe speech further here than on a typical theatre/cinema organ? Or is that a mechanism easily adjusted anyway?
@Offshoreorganbuilder
@Offshoreorganbuilder 10 жыл бұрын
The keys and stop controls on a mechanism such as this are merely switches. The 'key dip' can be as much or as little as you want (within reason.) The video looks to be squeezed (i.e. taller in aspect ratio) than it should be. This may be giving you a false impression.
@Offshoreorganbuilder
@Offshoreorganbuilder 10 жыл бұрын
A key dip of something like 3/8" maximum would be considered reasonable for any organ, but instruments do vary in their key dip - even the same instrument does, over a period of time, and the majority of mechanical action organs will certainly vary, from winter to summer. (There are ways around this, which sometimes work.) I carry 3 key dip blocks in my tool-box. Their thickness is 3/8" more or less, and they are used to re-set the key travel when this is needed. I don't know if Comptons had 2 standards. I can't see why they should, but even if they did, what state would they be in, now, after so many years, various cleanings, renovations etc. when the keys will have been re-levelled by different technicians. If anyone has any definite information, it would be interesting to hear from them. (And what about the point at which, on an electric action, the contacts close as the key descends. or the use of 'Hall Effect' sensors under the keys, by which it is possible to arrange for the contacts to 'make' at a different point in the travel from which they 'break.' The question of key dip is only the beginning!)
@Offshoreorganbuilder
@Offshoreorganbuilder 10 жыл бұрын
An interesting point. I had not considered 'double touch,' and cannot advise you on that, never having had to deal with it, other than in the case of stop keys, in which case the stop key moved the usual amount and the double touch facility (which cancelled all other stops in that department) was obtained by pressing the stop key down much harder than usual and therefore beyond its usual travel.
@OrganMusicYT
@OrganMusicYT 10 жыл бұрын
Offshoreorganbuilder John S. Batts It's more of having to do with the aspect ratio of the video. The Civic Hall organ doesn't have second touch. The touch depth on the key's is the same as any other Compton. With second touch you would have your standard key touch then push further down through into 2nd touch.

Great playing but why does the registration have to be changed continuously about every 2 or 3 bars, what about going a bit longer?
@RonN448
@RonN448 7 жыл бұрын
Neville, he's making the organ sound more orchestral with those registrations. It's why the instruments in an orchestra will take turns playing either the melody, the mood, or both. Same thing goes for the accompaniment. It just adds variety and minimizes boredom.

It wouldn't be quite so disconcerting if he just changed registration at the end of phrases instead of smack in the middle of them.

RonN488. An orchestrator would not make changes quite so frequently - the end of a phrase is more musically appropriate (a generalisation as of course in music there can be no hard and fast rules). At least Richard is not letting his changes interrupt the music as do some organists. Apart from over-registering, the playing is masterful and displays a wonderful instrument.

For those angry with its removal and destruction, you may like to know that the chambers and organ fabric and structure were contaminated with unstable brown asbestos when the ceiling was asbestos stripped, The council were told that the organ was a health hazard and it was condemned by the HSE which is why it wasn't allowed to be restored, as first anticipated, or offered to organ societies. It was with a heavy heart that the organ was destroyed and it was a difficult and very expensive job to remove and dispose of it safely. The organ was great, but it was not worth the lives of those tasked with working on it. The console was saved and will be hooked up to a state of the art digital system which will faithfully reproduce the organ's tones, so the best outcome has been achieved.

When the removal of the organ was initially discussed, I closely monitored the progress and diligently saved all the relevant documentation. Prior to the commencing of any work on the building, the organ chambers were securely sealed to prevent any damage to the instrument. An asbestos removal company informed the council that there was a possibility of asbestos contamination in the organ. However, the council was unwilling to bear the cost of testing the organ for asbestos contamination. Instead of heeding the advice of organ builders and conservation bodies, the council relied on the guidance of an asbestos removal company and an architect who, based on the information provided to the council, had no expertise in working with pipe organs. In the documentation, they even included lists copied and pasted from incorrect websites. Astonishingly, they went as far as suggesting that since the pipe organ couldn't be seen, no one would remember its sound. Furthermore, they falsely claimed that the removal of the original console (which you speak of and can see in use in this video) rendered the organ unplayable. Once a pipe organ is lost, it is lost forever, as each pipe (every note is one pipe) is meticulously crafted and tailored to suit the acoustics of the room it is installed in. These instruments are true works of art. No digital substitute can ever replicate the acoustic sound from the original, as the original itself is no longer available for digital sampling. Additionally, speakers can never reproduce the unique tones produced by thousands of individual pipes. It's akin to attempting to fit a square peg into a round hole. It is worth mentioning that the council's attempt to remove the organ under the pretense of smoke evacuation occurred prior to this this entire debacle. The entire reconstruction of the hall was an absolute disaster from beginning to end, with nearly £50 million spent solely to add 400 seats. The majority of organ builders and professional organizations I have spoken to, consider the destruction of this instrument to be nothing short of complete and utter vandalism. The worst possible outcome has been achieved.

@@OrganMusicYT Sadly, the mention of brown asbestos means no hope whatsoever of restoration. The asbestos company know better than the builders, both organ and otherwise, and as soon as the flagged up the possibility of contamination, that was that. Rules and regs concerning asbestos are prescriptive and are laid down by the HSE. It's a tragedy, but the chance of some one contracting asbestosis or related cancers is a real risk. I understand that the asbestos removal company have sealed up the organ components which means specialist destruction which is very, very expensive. I had to get an asbestos company to remove and destroy 3 theatre spot lights and it cost the theatre £1500.

There was zero proof provided of asbestos contamination. Read the back story prior to the organ supposedly being contaminated with asbestos. It was nothing more than a ruse to get rid of the instrument by a completely incompetent council and contractors.

Being in the U.S., I didn't hear about this tragic loss at the time. Truly shameful, and what a wonderful instrument it was! Did any of those awful people on the council lose their jobs over this? Were they maybe so stupid as to think that the console WAS the organ, so none of the rest mattered?
@OrganMusicYT
@OrganMusicYT 3 жыл бұрын
They didn't involve any organ builders in the process of removing the organ. The reports were all done by a private asbestos removal firm who had absolutely no understanding or knowledge of the instrument, or pipe organs in general. That is absolutely clear in the reports which at one point state that because you can't see the pipes they are of no importance... that's the level of stupidity that was involved in this. The report basically stated that the chambers may possibly have been contaminated with asbestos. That the council couldn't justify the cost of testing each component and their for it should be scrapped.

The council wanted to be rid of the instrument to make space for a fly tower. The claim was that there was the possibility that the instrument might have been contaminated with asbestos fibres. No testing was done, as it would have meant testing every component of the instrument in order to prove that there was no asbestos contamination. No organ building firms were consulted in any of this, and no organ building firms were involved. Offers of removal, storage or private ownership were made by numerous bodies and companies and all were refused. The instruments importance was downplayed, as well as downright lies such as the console being completely removed/completely replaced, and that because you could not see the instrument, it had no importance, and nobody would remember it. It was all carried out by bodies that had absolutely no knowledge or involvement with pipe organs whatsoever. Any advice given by organ building firms etc was completely ignored.
