I see a parallel with the problem of sales of illegal drugs. Everyone with a brain knows that legalizing drug use, and with it creating medical centres where health care professionals can distribute drugs to addicts in a safe environment would cut the legs out from under the drug dealers. And if combined with a substantial investment into more rehabilitation clinics, this would go a very, very long way to tackling the problems of addiction to drugs. And yet it is only in countries such as Portugal, which have a far more progressive government, that this is done. What Richard Murphy is outlining is very much the same. Politicians dare not espouse such a position for fear of being branded a 'loony leftie' by the press/media. This is why we have no real progress here in the UK.
