This 120mm x 50mm bowl is turned from the centre saved in the Simple Bowl Coring video. For in-depth explanations of the tools and techniques you need to refer to my books and videos, and particularly Turning Bowls. www.richardraffan.com.au/book...

I continue to marvel at the openness of the woodturning community and its inherent willingness to help one another. For you to have the patience to present to the plethora of us underling idiots amazes me. For that I am grateful. Thank you!

Mr Raffan, it is truly a pleasure to watch a true Master at work. I am fairly new to turning and watching the ease and precision that you turn is amazing to watch and learn from. Your videos help all turners, new and experienced, that are fortunate enough to find your channel. Thank you for taking the time to produce such quality videos.

Beautiful bowl, a nice piece of timber. Your use of the scraper informative: how you use it to shape and finish the surfaces. What a lesson! A great complement to your books.

There is beauty in the simplicity of the small bowl done with such skill and precision. The wood is particularly beautiful especially with the oil wax finish.

I began woodturning about 2004. Most of what I know I have gleaned from your books and DVDs from Taunton Press. This seems like a good chance to say thank you. I hope you keep making these videos. There's so much nonsense out there, these are a joy to watch.

when you're honing the scraper edge are you making the edge crisper or trying to raise a burr on it or a bit of both? when i hone my scrapers with a diamond card i tend to pull up to try to raise more of a burr and have even heard of folks using a carbide rod to replace the burr with a hook like a cabinet scraper. looks like you're honing both up and down so guessing it's more crisp and less burr. nice bowl. :)

I have the same question about the wood spieces. What is she-oak. What you turned looks a lot like mahogany. But whatever it is you certainly did it justice. 👍👍Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

I don't have any experience with the boiled linseed oil and wax combination as a finish, but have seen you use it on many videos. Does it hold up over time? If not, how do you touch it up?
@RichardRaffanwoodturning
@RichardRaffanwoodturning Жыл бұрын
I hope my bowls will be used. If used for food they'll be washed in hot water and detergent which removes the finish. I put a label on each bowl that advies what to do. Bowls in daily used can be treated like a wooden chopping board: washed and left to drain, oiled very occasionally if you feel you absolutely have to. If a bowl isn't going to go near water it can be polished with any furniture polish, preferably beeswax-based, but that's not essential. Regular polishing, say weekly, soon produces an antique-like patina you'll never get out of a bottle or can.

Did you say you used Bees Wax to finish?
@RichardRaffanwoodturning
@RichardRaffanwoodturning 11 ай бұрын
Correct. I use pure beeswax, often mixed with boiled linseed oil on the wood as it spins on the lathe. .

I don't like the tenon left as a foot. I see how it is quicker, but I like when you make a jam chuck and remove the tenon.
@RichardRaffanwoodturning
@RichardRaffanwoodturning Жыл бұрын
If you don't care for footed bowls, that's a curious personal preference given the long tradition of footed bowls in many cultures. If you don't like the idea of a foot being used as a tenon that's simply ridiculous and shows a lack of imagination or lack of chucks. Why add a needless extra step in the bowl making process if you can avoid it.

Leaving a tenon foot, or not, is entirely a design decision. The shape of the tenon foot lifts the bowl from the surface on which it is resting and provides a nice complement to the bowl design.
