Wow. This scene gets even sadder, when you realize, that Gabriel does the whole thing acutally just because he wants Sam to prepare what it feels like to loose a beloved brother and accept the loss, because he went through the same by loosing Lucifer. Just wow.

so, the last scene becomes so much more meaningful when you know gabriel's past. because, gabe wanted to teach sam a lesson. but when sam broke down, and just begged for his brother to come back, gabriel stopped. for gabriel is an archangel who would give anything to have his big brother back. because gabriel remembered who he felt when lucifer ended up in the cage, and lesson or not, he didnt want that feeling for anyone, much less caused by his own hands

I love how Gabriel, despite his reluctance, gave into Sam's pleas. I also love how this wasn't just about getting back at them for trying to kill him before; that he actually cares about what happens to them, and how it impacts them. Oh Gabe, you'd never let on you had a heart, would you? Not until later, at any rate. :P

7 seasons later Sam's still ignoring Gabe's lesson.

Look into Gabriel's eyes when he's talking to Sam. You can see the compassion and pain in his eyes, he is truly truly to help Sam. He doesn't want him to have to go through what he went through when Lucifer was banished. As much as Gabriel tries to hide it he truly does care.

I love how during the six-month montage, we see Sam as this cold, vengeful killing machine ruthlessly hunting the Trickster…but as soon as he meets him in person, he just breaks down and begs to get his brother back.

Sam has always been the more compassionate one, the one who took a person aside and kindly tried to interrogate them. Its painful to see him so cold and ruthless.

Trickster (secretly Archangel Gabriel, one of the strongest beings in existence): "Sometimes, you just gotta let people go." Sam, knowing his brother is doomed to Hell for him: "... He's my _brother."_ Gabriel, remembering _his_ brothers Michael and Lucifer fighting, having to leave Heaven to escape it and would give anything to have them be loving friendly brothers again: "... Yup... and like it or not... _this is what life's gonna be like without him."_

Seven years ago, late at night, I was channel surfing. I flicked to the CW, watched the last couple minutes of Smallville, and let the next show fade in while I did my homework. I saw it was a show I vaguely remembered seeing two years prior...just a single episode and nothing monumental, but hey I could stand to watch it. This was what waited for me. I had no idea the significance of Dean's deaths. I didn't know about the deal he made to bring Sam back. I didn't have the whole picture, but it was funny with just the right amount of serious for me to start considering investing in the show. Picking it up to read the back at Best Buy. Then finally finding the time to tune in less than a year later, to an episode that finished getting me hooked: In the Beginning from Season 4. But this is the episode I credit now for so many things. For fostering friendships and strengthening my bonds with my own family. For giving me a goofy thing to look forward every Thursday and a big grin on my face. This episode holds a very special place in my heart and what an important episode it was too. We didn't even know how big this episode was back then. Thank you for sharing this. The final scenes, the ones that made me fall for Sam with Jared's superb acting here.

After the revelation that this Loki is Gabriel in season 5 and so on, this scene has more meaning to it. Gabe just giving Sam a lesson to learn to let go and be prepared of his brother soon to be demise. And he is giving up his trick here? Maybe it reminds him about his brothers, Michael and Lucifer. They were once loved each other until Lucifer turned to evil after the Mark and everything. Maybe Gabe sees Sam and Dean just like as his brother. Because they too are his brother's true vessels.

I love Gabriel. some people hate him for what he put Sam through but I think he was right to do that to Sam. Gabriel and lucifer are my favourite characters from the show because they are both so like me as a person so yeah my favourite characters...

So the last time Dean dies in this episode, he stays dead for 6-months, and since he's already sold his soul at this point, doesn't that mean that Dean spent 6-months in Hell during that time? It was, of course, reversed when Gabriel undid everything, but still. Strange to think that Dean spent 6-months in Hell but he doesn't remember it because in the end it didn't technically happen . . .

In the end, Gabriel was right, Sam wasn't able to save Dean.

The way sam act after dean die in this episode is literally the best way sam should act after Dean's death, becomes the best hunter he can be, the only time they did it right. The others times is trash, Sam stops being a hunter after he lost dean, I mean, really? Such a dumb thing to do, instead of continue saving the world, he prefers just let it die? After fighting to save it for the most part of his life. That's not the sam that Dean raised.

Everyones saying that Gabriel was the one trying to teach Sam to let Dean go but, if you think about it, Gabriel possessed the Trickster after this. This was purely the Trickster's (Loki's) work.

In retrospect they were foreshadowing how Sam did get when Dean died before Ruby showed up. A hot mess, depressed, probably not sleeping and a bit crazed

Sad thing is this shows just how unhealthy the relationship between Sam and Dean truly is

At this time we still think this is the Norse trickster god Loki, and not Gabriel the archangel. These were seeds for the next season.

I have a question as a newbie Supernatural fan who just watched this episode. How "real" is the whole scenario after Dean's death on Wednesday? Like the trickster is doing this all to teach Sam to let Dean go, I get that, and once he does bring Dean back it means those past six months never happened, but when those six months were happening, was that all a scenario created by the trickster to prove a point to Sam, as in: this is what will happen to you if you don't let go of Dean, or is the idea that this is what actually happens to Sam (until the trickster reverses it)? Was Sam really just casually going to go out and spill someone's guts to summon the trickster? Or had he already figured out it wasn't Bobby (since the real Bobby wouldn't just be like, "yeah, we need a gallon of blood, no biggie")?

Gabriel was trying to show Sam that going around in circles sacrificing themselves for each other has consequences. The worst was what Sam did and unleashed to save Dean from the mark.
