Should we have to trade our privacy to large private companies just to be able to communicate with each other?
Should there be tighter legislation in this area of consumer technology?
You decide !

I wish smartphones were more modular so we could remove a mic and camera, for example, as easy as removing ram from a hard drive or maybe even easier. Also, the hardware being open source. We can put them in electrostatic pouches while not in use to help aid in privacy a bit.

They still hook up to cell towers and go through mobile data providers, so they're still tracking your location and listening to your conversations. They are marginally better, but they really don't address most of the core issues. You would need a mobile device that uses VoIP over the internet, which would require the use of public wireless access points and carry its own risks, and it would prevent you from sending or receiving text conversations.

@p1epm4tz

Almost all smartphones are able to execute an emergency call even without a sim card. Therefore you can believe that your smartphone will still connect to radio towers. This leads to the conclusion that removing the sim card does not prevent tracking of smartphones.

The only thing we can really do, inside this society, is to be aware and spread our awareness. If enough people wake up from their slumber, our collective uncounscious will be enough to change things. This is a long process and could require generations, a collective effort. Or it can simply explode in a bloodbath. Humans will always live the conflict of what's right for us as people and what's good for us as individuals, this is one of our biggest struggles.

No. The reason is completely else. It started with Apple, everyone is following that shit company. They didn't have a removable battery. Others followed. They removed the headphone jack, Everyone followed. They added an ugly notch, everyone followed. They removed the charging brick from their packaging, everyone followed.... Idk if you noticed but it all leads to fucking apple. and now those companies are following apple as well by locking down the device, like taking all your control on what you can do to it, away like it isn't even yours when you bought it.

They can track me when I go buy groceries, and they can listen to my mad mumbling? I've been trying to get someone to listen to me, so if I talk to my phone the government will listen? If there is over 400 million phone conversations a day how many people does it that to listen to all that, would take a long time to go through all those calls. Note to self "don't say anything over the phone, someone might be listening". What if we just want to order pizza? Don't get me wrong, I admire and respect the man immensely. We definitely need our privacy and what's happening is outrageous and must be stopped.

I cannot lie, Stallman can come across as pretty annoying...he has a bit of a superiority complex. Yes, we are aware of what phones are capable of, but these backdoors are utilized in the case of suspected criminal behavior (granted, this is a subjective standard, I know...there are compromises). The government obviously doesn't have the resources to parse every single conversation taking place; these resources are targeted. Frankly, I'm not opposed to this. If you opt for the "ultimate" in privacy, you do give up some safety (Yes, I'm aware of the quote...). I would be OK with something like 80% privacy, 20% safety, and I honestly don't think we're far from that now with phone operating systems (things like Facebook are definitely another story...). The government does frequently thwart planned terrorist attacks and the like. It's not like surveillance is there purely to invade your privacy and creep on you.

@@MEWOVER9000 such mass murders are pure bogus made up as a way to deter the masses from the only true alternative to the injustices and devastation of capitalism. The population of the Soviet Union went from 137 million to 200 million from 1920 to 210 million in 1959. So no one missing. The Soviet Union did not fail or collapse, it was ilegally dissolved against the will of its population manifested in two refrendums, Russia has now one of the highest suicide rates in the world, people look back and miss those good times when everybody had a job, healthcare, food and shelter, nothing for free all provided by their job. Life in all socialist republics was better before, Romania, Yugoslavia, are all the backwater of Europe now with high unemployment and terrible life conditions. Any shortages in the 80s were due to privatization by traitor Gorbachev, effectively worsening life conditions for the masses, so literally the more capitalist the USSR became, the worse life was. You're drawing a false equivalence between a corporation, whose sole purpose is the greed for profit compared to a government composed mostly of workers and where the economy is not left to a gamble but planned by society in the best interest of society.
