How do you know that we aren’t just figments of someones imagination? NASA scientist Richard Terrile ties together both science and religion in this talk and how there is a possibility that our existence is simply a simulation.

Even science says everything is energy and energy cannot die. Soon we'll all realise the brain is essentially a wireless computer. It has memory but is connected wirelessly to consciousness, which is universal (the universe itself!).

I don't think we'll be able to simulate consciousness in 30 years or even 60, but it's hard for me to argue that in 100 years or 500, if humanity hasn't destroyed itself, that computers won't have the capacity to run a complete and total simulation consciousness or even of the entire universe.

Terrille’s idea of a simulated universe created by our own human descendants from the future or by another advanced beings is a fascinating one. Standing on the existing scientific discoveries, this may be the only plausible explanation one can come up with.

Life is not mathematical. And its limited to perception. Mathematics is a human interpretative device, with the potential of being closely accurate or vastly inaccurate to reality varying from person to person and time to time. Mathematics is an interpretation of life. A language like any language, developing and limited to human consciousness. Science is study and observation, the statement that “Science is the discovery of the mathematical framework which explains your observations." is Paradoxal in reality. And many scientists and philosophers do not come from this particular school of assumption. For example the first assumption is that possibilities and what we've developed as laws of physics are universal across the cosmos, wheres the evidence for that...

that one thing that is everything resides in the only thing we will never understand, in the absence of everything (absolute vacuum or singularity). from there and within itself (since there is no other place to be or go) it does its magic, in absence of time and space it can be anywhere and everywhere in the eternal moment of now (call it the "Prime Radiant" if you like), thus simulating the infinite. I like a lot the kaballistic expression "Ain Soph Aur" which translated to french shows its beauty: "Le rien du tout" meaning the nothing of everything. I guess that is the source (code, matrix or algorithm) in which we (everithing) float(s) and are able to create our own realitie(s). Of course I left out the detail about the HOW!! :)

If the Universe is a simulation, why was that simulation written/compiled/initialized, is this the first iteration or were their others previously (IMHO we are not the first, because there was some "diddling" of the physical 'constants' with widely varying values until "good enough" was arrived at.) and when may whatever be "solved" and everything 'turned off'?

What I've always wondered about: Why does light have a set speed? And why does speed affect time? To me that has similarities to how a computer works. A program can not run faster than the information given by it's processor. Ever played a computer game in the past that your graphics card couldn't quite handle? What happens? Everything stops. Light itself does not experience time. It traverses the universe instantly from it's perspective, because it's running at the processing speed of the universe. - But why do I never see scientists take on this subject or explain why? From what I see they only accept that light moves at a certain speed and that it affects time, but I almost never see them question why? Because my understanding of reality, which means reality with no layers above, then there should be no rules limiting speed or time. Rules are counter-productive for chaos. And the universe isn't chaotic. From human perspective yes, but from scientific perspective no. It follows set rules. And rules do not appear out of random. I'd love to just lay in bed an be lazy all day or sleep through my entire life...But my body tells me "I need food" "I need water" "I need stimuly". Energy or a giant gas cloud also would love to sleep all day. But someone kicked them out of bed. We humans misunderstand randomness. We think that everything that can happen will happen because of randomness. Randomness is also a rule. Randomness does not work unless it has something to work with. I'm no genius, but I do know that nothing can come out of nothing. Imo you can never understand the universe just by observing it's rules (science and math). That is the same as accepting the world as it is and not questioning reality at all. Exactly the same as a computer generated character. It follows the rules given to it and never breaks out of those set rules. We humans have a certain ability to look beyond those rules. Our consciousness and imagination. Those are tools to look beyond this reality, even if they can not perceive the truth. But if the universe is created, then is must be based on some values / traits / patterns of said creator. Just like each of us have different skills and personalities.

When/if we are able to program consciousness and put in the Sims, we will essentially be gods of our own universes of people. Whether or not they know of us will be up to us to decide. We will, however, make them suffer. All you have to do is look at the violence of our current entertainment. Who hasn't laughed when their Sims die? We'll still do it when they have AI consciousness. It's kind of sad, but inevitable. We will be ambivalently cruel and merciful gods, depending on how we feel that day. Kinda sounds old testament, doesn't it? Maybe we'll want to start a new game, so wipe out our current one in a flood or fire. -shrug- Start New Game. Some people, of course, will love their conscious Sims and let them evolve and evolve and discover math and question their existence and develop computing...

What is his definition of "Simulation" secondly we don't know that life is finite obviously theirs no scientific method currently available that can measure the universe - www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Is_the_Universe_finite_or_infinite_An_interview_with_Joseph_Silk This man is just extrapolating. And everyone else jumping on the simulation bandwagon. There's no way to prove that it's a simulation, so as if yet its just a philosophy not science.
@jeremyyarbro87498 жыл бұрын
Here we have a scientist failing in the same spot that everyone else does when considering a "simulation theory". They want to accept the idea that this is a virtual reality, but they are not ready to accept the logical consequences of that idea. He gets to a certain point, then he starts talking about the "meat and bones" and how consciousness is produced by the brain. However, that concept and the concept of a VR are mutually exclusive. Consciousness does not come from within a virtual reality. There is no meat and bones in a virtual reality. Only data. Only virtual meat and bones. Consciousness is real, not virtual. Therefore virtual brains cannot logically produce consciousness. If this is a VR, the ultimate logical consequence is that our consciousness is not produced inside the VR. It exists outside the VR, and the purpose of this VR (like any other computer game) is for our nonphysical consciousness to experience a highly constrained interactive multiplayer reality. This is the major hurdle that must be overcome by materialsitic dogmatic science/scientists if the true theory of reality (VR theory) is to be explored fullly.
@RogerDavis7958 жыл бұрын
"...our consciousness is not produced inside the VR." No matter which way my contemplation turns, I keep banging against this notion that there exists something outside of myself. I think the VR theory is a good one because it matches to the ghost in the machine, and turtles all the way down...MUST be good thinking ;)

Let's just make this simple and debunk the stupidity of this argument at the forefront of his argument. It starts ironically at about 4:20 when he says that "our universe is mathematical, it is based on mathematics and it runs on mathematics." Even though the previous sentence he mentioned that science was the art of using mathematics to increase our comprehension of the natural world. So here we find this huge gap, like an enormous gap. He was right the first time, about science being an art of applying cognitive models to improve comprehension and communicability of 'knowledge' about the world of things and stuff. But then started speaking like Donald Trump telling you how amazing it is, instead of having to back up his argument for basic things and stuff. He just ignored that the actual world exists and that math measures it, but that it is NOT CONTINGENT UPON MATH NOR IS MATH A NECESSITY OF ITS EXISTENCE! So this, its math so a computer made it forgets that we made math because we have the world, and we made computers because we had math and the world... not the other way around. Just like god didn't make man, history shows us more clearly when thoroughly read that man in fact created the IDEA of god. Go back to metaphysics 101 bruh. Descartes showed that your mind is better than a computer so get out of your moms basement and get out of your technological fantasy shit because it totally laughs in the face of the existence that doesn't need you thinking about it for it to exist. This guy is not a scientist, he is a hack.
@zacht13767 жыл бұрын
Quantum Mechanics explains the functions of our brains using mathematics. The simulation theory already acknowledges the many complex variables that life offers, which, wait for it....can be explained with math. Its hard to debunk a theory that requires knowledge of something that we cant yet comprehend(unlikely to) in the first place, so do not claim you can debunk the "stupidity" of a theory with this magnitude. If you were around Computer coding, cellular biology, and quantum physics most of your days then a simplification of what youre observing points to a possible theory, the theory of simulation. We cannot comprehend nothingness, we cannot comprehend not having a conciousness that operates on a sub-atomic level because that is what gives us our perception and ability to define the "physical reality". With math as a tool, it gives us the ability to "simulate" into the future where the possibility of humans being extinct is thrown into the mix, or even the past so we can trace the steps of phases when certain aspects of life and expansion of galaxies were not yet happening or were waiting to occur. I cannot for sure say we live in a simulation, but the fact that math is our way of progressing at a rapid rate to where even we can perform simulations of life and even the universe(Quantum computing) points to a real possibility of simulation. Do not be close minded.
@tyrssen16 жыл бұрын
You completely misunderstood the statement. Look up "sacred geometry" for one aspect.
@omegapointil57418 жыл бұрын
This simulation is much too over simplified to legitimately describe a Universe and all the systems and interactions it rests on. Is the simulation capable beyond the visible band, does it account for photosynthesis, bacteria, cellular interaction, every water molecule in all the oceans? The elaborations go on. Of course the foundation of the possibility benefits from an open ended computational ability, but then Life isn't static. Where you really get into trouble is with the question, How did the simulator come into its existence? The unmoved mover. The answer, as in religion and atheism is no answer at all, that question is off limits or its always been here, which puts us right back to the mystery square we started from. Indra Net, Multi Verses, Nested Turtles or Russian Dolls aren't any answer at all. The Cosmic Freedom of Information Act has that chapter redacted. God, figuratively used, seems to have set limits to our imaginations equal to our inability to traverse the stars. That light hasn't reached us yet.
@TraderTimmy8 жыл бұрын
+omegapointil It's a fascinating scenario. However, it seems to be wrought with challenges. Our particular universe simulation would have to be within another larger universe. This is a dilemma. If thought through, it logically leads to having universes within universes, within universes, and so on. There's no end to it. And how about the power consumption needed to create a universe? Wheere, within an existing universe, do you have room to put the new universes that you're generating? Where are the coding abnormalities, the glitches, the error corrections? I think there are many questions science needs to prove before this hypothesis ever has a chance.
