The arrangement is similar to Elvis Costello's "God's Comic", but preceeds it by 3 years approximately

Richard at his best. One of the greatest story tellers and best guitar players around. Saw him live around this time. Sheer magic!!!

This song stole my breath when I heard it on some LA radio station late October 1987. Damn if I still haven't recovered in September 2022.

I love this song. I saw him play it at a small club in 1986. A consummate guitarist and performer.

If there is a heaven and I am not saying there is - I'll book a ticket for a seat at an Al Bowlly concert.

Al Bowlly - who recorded between 1926 (it is believed) and 1941 - died in the London bombings -one of the most underrated voices of the last century

In good company with John Prine's "Sam Stone."

The proper way to describe this would be ... Elvis Costello's "God's Comic" is a similar arrangement, three years later.

Al Bowlly is definitely worth checking out. Keep an open mind. He was a great singer and guitar player

It's not a question of whether he liked him or not; it's about homeless WW2 veteran and a lot of people from that time did like him; he was a big forces entertainer, the same as Glenn Miller who died in similar circumstances.
