Art21 proudly presents an artist segment, featuring Richard Tuttle, from the "Structures" episode in Season 3 of the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" series.
"Structures" premiered in September 2005 on PBS.
Richard Tuttle uses humble materials such as paper, wire, and string to create art “that accounts for the invisible.” In an exhibition at The Drawing Center in New York, Tuttle creates “villages” in which sculptures invite viewers into a contemplative relationship with the artist’s diminutive drawings.
Richard Tuttle was born in Rahway, New Jersey, in 1941, and lives and works in New Mexico and New York. Learn more about the artist at: art21.org/artist/Richard-Tuttle

I adore him! I fan girled so much when I met him at my job years ago. He was there to see the alexander McQueen exhibit and expressed how much he loves his work.

It's wonderful to hear Richard Tuttle speaking on his art. His understanding of art transcends the usual narrative embraced by many popular artists (many of whom overly rely on their personal identity and "story" as the sole basis for making art). Tuttle also refrains from the trite social commentaries that are politically motivated and depend largely on topical issues trending at the time. Art made by a thinker such as Tuttle resides in a stratum that eludes many people. // This my be the house that was designed by architect Steven Holl.

Fascinating man, fascinating artist. Purely subjective but I'n not a fan of yellow, or red, or primary colors for that matter. The exploration of mid-tones is what I'm most interested though not in an impressionistic way but more for feeling and atmosphere. I feel I never quite get Tuttle but I'm always interested in seeing his work and love the notion of creating a middle ground between drawing and, not sculpture, but as Tuttle states, architecture.
