In this coaching clinic filmed exclusively for CV Academy, Richard Walker explains the key principles that underpin his coaching of pressing from the front.
Walker was named lead professional development phase coach at Wolves in the summer of 2023, having spent five years in the same role at Stoke City. Here, setting up in the 4-2-3-1 formation he used with his Stoke Under-18 team, he describes how the front four can be used in pressing high, closing down space, limiting the in-possession options of the opposing defenders and, ultimately, winning the ball as close to the opposition goal as possible.
Walker also discusses how the rest of the team can be used to support and enhance an aggressive press, before going on to illustrate how the same principles can be applied to pressing from a different starting formation - in this example, the 3-5-2. Finally, he speaks about the coaches and teams he uses as a reference when building his own press from the front.
It’s a fascinating insight into an area of the game that is increasingly prevalent in the modern game. We hope you enjoy it!

One of the best pressing videos I've ever seen.

I like that the intent is to put young players in exposed situations, 1 vs 1. I did that also with some teenage teams I had, just to try and make them ready to depend on themselves and not be afraid. Unfortunately parents dont always understand these things. They often just see the result but not possible progression in defeats and certain difficult situations. Thank you for good content here

I like the emphasis of not being to attached to the formation but instead what's more important is the principles.

He said you can go around, not through. But he's leaving out that they can go over you. It's a 3D game not 2D. The trend has been a high line. But even Pep has changed up and is exploiting this more with Ederson playing more long balls, and those create nice chances. Ex vs Man United in the FA cup where they scored in the first 15 seconds. Personally I hate a high line due to the space behind it affords the opponent. I would rather let the opponent have space near their own goal, away from ours. They can pass back and for all day long there and it won't hurt me.

Agreed but this isn't true in the lower leagues. There are only a few goalkeepers who have a high accuracy long ball over the top ball in their caliber. No goalkeeper has this ability in the lower leagues so it's not much of a concern.

I find it intersting to press like this during certain stages of the game: 1. During the first 10-15 minutes every half 2. Whilst the opponent is leading But you also need some pace in the front nd the back because if just one or two players are too late it leaves your team vulnerable

You missed it when he put his goalkeeper high off their line to cover any balls over top

@@ryanmillertradingeconomics8183 ohhh i see i see. that's a good point. but ederson still goes long a lot. i saw a video that was analyzing stats and he goes long more than other GKs in the EPL.

Ideally there should be enough pressure on the cb to prevent a good ball played into the area
