Great pair of videos and so cool to know that this is all being shot around my childhood stomping ground. Like you I disappeared off to a military career but now enjoying the time and space to enjoy wildlife photography too. barn Owl and Peregrine are on the ‘things to do’ list and Devon, like Cornwall, has lots of opportunities. Now to clean those lens and bodies. Next stop the cleaning video. Keep them coming Rich.

Great video, thanks for sharing how you go about setting up, etc., and interesting that you like walking about ‘light’ sometimes. Have you ever had an owl come over and check you out? I have had one come and hover about ten feet away from me to see what was making that shutter noise, it was quite a moment, it was brief, special and a bit scary all at the same time. At the time I was knelt in a field early in the morning with a camo net over me having seen the owl there over the previous few days. Our owl has only just returned so I am hoping for another encounter! All the best, Rich.

I really enjoyed this edition Richard, a film full of details, thought and useful information. Thank you. The Merlin didn't interfere with the sound quality too much - I'm sure you've jumped out of a few of those so, best to let the boys have their practice :-) Our barn owls are amazing creatures, at our latitude north, they are absolutely at the out threshold of their ability to survive; my guess is they'll be out hunting a lot after our frozen couple of weeks. Fabulous animals. Stay safe Richard, all best wishes as ever.

Hi Richard , I have been watching the last couple of months or so and subscribed so with my first comment here I thought I would say thank you for the fantastic videos. Pretty new to photography myself and started on an old Canon 450d crop during the first lockdown and adding more gear over the time this year with lenses, tripods, hides . I bought myself a Canon 1DX 2 weeks ago which is a bit of a step up in gear as I have got the photography bug and just love wildlife , the new camera already has helped me improve. Last weekend I caught my first Barn owl which was just magical and exhilarating as it swooped past me as I sat still in a corner of the field in camo gear , the pictures is on my Instagram page, not a great pic dark setting in , high iso but good for my first one , the first one but hopefully one of many. I hope the tips you provided help me as I go back this weekend / tomorrow morning and get that perfect shot we all wish for. Thanks again for the inspiration and passion that filters down to eager photographers like me whom want to improve and contribute to some wonderful pictures. Hopefully one day I might just have the confidence to film and blog once I feel comfortable knowing what I am doing .

Hi Ian, great to have you following the channel and thanks for getting in touch. Wow, quite the step up but its a beast of a camera with such a great host of features all packed in a tried and tested body so a great purchase! I wish you the best of luck photographing them, they are without doubt the best birds to watch and photograph! And great that you've managed to get some shots already! Mine at the moment are all pretty much taken in the dark with the ISO being up to 25,600 which is insane, a little editing here and there and they look okay for social media! It's such a pleasure to get comments like yours as this is what I love most about my whole journey, to inspire others and to help out where I can, when and if you do start don't hesitate to get in touch as I am more than happy to help out! It's a minefield KZfaq but time, patience and effort it does start to pay off. All the best and have a great weekend. R👍

Hi Richard. A good series and looking forward to part III. Could you please possibly discuss the use of the external screen mounted on your hot shoe. I did go back to your equipment video of Dec 2019 but it didn't feature in that. If your thinking about upgrading to the 1DX mkIII, I would suggest you don't. Instead save up a little more and get the mkIII. Have you considered the R5 rather than another DSLR? All the best from Dorset.
@RichardBirchett
@RichardBirchett 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Roger, the external screen is such a great addition to my outfit! A good price and great quality, without it video would be a right pain, makes a huge difference. There are others but so much more expensive, you just buy the additional batteries and a charger and its good to go, batteries last quite long. You can find all the links to my products in the Vlog description or through my website gear page richardbirchett.co.uk/new-page-1 and I do cover it a little in one of my recent Vlogs kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gs1ke9p_ytTXf40.html I am quite happy with my 1Dx Mk 2 and haven't long upgraded to it, I will eventually go to the R5 or its replacement but happy for a while, great camera but not sure I need 8K and its as good in low light as my DX2 from DXOLabs test. Thanks again, Richard

Another great edition Richard. Loved Part I and have been waiting for Part II. For low light, you quite rightly mention you need to shoot wide open (f/4 in your case). However, the depth of field for wide open is measured in centimetres. Don't you find, even with the AF settings, your hit rate is very low? I just need to set my expectations Thanks! (Nikon Z7 user).
@RichardBirchett
@RichardBirchett 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, thanks very much indeed great to hear from you. Yes its a bit of a trade off but I have found the hit rate pretty good most of the time. All of the exposure information aperture, shutter speed, and ISO are related and does so at the cost of depth of field. When i'm shooting with my long telephoto lenses, depth of field is almost always something that’s at a premium; especially with larger wildlife. At 75 to 100 feet with a 600mm lens at f/4 depth of field is less than 2 feet; at f/8 it’s less than 4 feet. For comparison, a Red Deers Antler can be 2 feet long. I would ideally like to be at F5.6/6.3 but I'm always needing that extra bit of shutter speed to stop that motion blur, although if my AF tracking is good enough blurred wings and in focus face is always an option. I think Canon or Nikon is pretty similar, Z7 is a cracking camera, not sure if I've helped here but I hope you kind of know what I'm trying to say. all the best and thanks again R.
@markdavies4171
@markdavies4171 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Richard for taking time to reply. I'm happy with my Z7, but the Z6 would definitely cope better in low light. One more question please on owl behaviour.... We are lucky to have a pair of barn owls in our barn, but haven't had the knowledge up until now. Do they come out to hunt earlier in winter months gradually coming out later towards summer, or is it roughly a set time each night? Thanks Richard!
@stevemurnan1702
@stevemurnan1702 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard. Picking upon your point about shutter speed. On higher resolution sensor cameras like your 5DSR do you find you have to up the shutter speed to get sharp images? I've recently moved from a 5D4 to an R5 and I'm finding I have to up my shutter as the higher MP body is less forgiving.
@RichardBirchett
@RichardBirchett 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, totally with you on that! My 5DSR is a nightmare at low shutter speeds and it's not the best at high ISO so the balance needs to be right! Don't think I've used my 5DSR for much Owl photography due to the light, I think the words less forgiving is right on the money. Best of luck with thew R5 I've heard great things, maybe one day! Cheers Richard
@stevemurnan1702
@stevemurnan1702 3 жыл бұрын
@@RichardBirchett If you're looking for a low light beast with fast fps and good iso the R6 is better than the R5. It has the 1DXmk3 sensor and the AF of the R5 so you can shoot at high iso with 20fps silently using eye detect AF. The R5 is a cracking camera though. I've a caravan at Upton Towans in Hayle and normally spend April to October in Cornwall but this Covid has messed up my plans.

I heard a barn owl really close, was infact on my neighbours roof, then I heard another one calling then what sounded like a bit of a squabble and I saw one swoop down and fly off but could still here them calling. Could they be competing for territory/females? Just need to find where they are coming from to get pics as this was about 21:15 Good vlog again 😎👍

Hi Laurence, sounds very much like it could be safeguarding territory's as this time of year is quite vocal, was it a hiss, bark scream you heard? Best of luck you find out where they are, keep me posted I'd be really interested to see how you get on. Thanks again Richard 👍

Hi Ben, no problem! To be honest I've had loads of Tripods over the years, Benbo, Manfrotto but only last year I purchased my first Gitzo Series 3 Tripod and I tell you what its an absolute beauty and I would never buy anything else! They are expensive and are worth saving that bit much more for but you won't regret it. You can get them secondhand from WEX, MPB and a few other companies so could get one for around £350 if you are lucky. If this is not an option I'll take a look at some alternatives for you. I did a Vlog on the series 3 which might help? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8B-pJZ9r5a0m2g.html all the best Richard 👍
