The problem is not capitalism, it is the failure to reform our feudal tax system. Capitalism with a free-rider tax system is not capitalism. We need to shift all taxes onto land values. Until we re-discover Henry George, we'll get nowhere.

@@marvintpandroid2213 With respect, you are falling for the modern myth that land isn't as important as it used to be - that's wrong - the land market is by far the largest of all markets (yet we never speak of it - why?). Land value is 30% of the economy, look at your own expenses - your biggest bill is rent / mortgage isn't it. workers can't afford to live in city after city around the world, all because our tax system makes the rich bid up land prices. This is what causes the boom bust cycle, this is the topmost driver of poverty. We don't want to tax "wealth" we want to tax unearned wealth.

Capitalism and common sense religious beliefs are mutually exclusive. A Christian-capitalist is an oxymoron (a square peg in a round hole). Christian-socialist is more logical and workable without neurosis and cognitive dissonance. If we look at Mondragon corp., we see it was founded by a priest who was interpreting the scriptures more according to the actual values. If we were to ask whether Jesus would promote capitalism or socialism, it would be be socialism - a socialism that treats everyone as equals and with dignity. Be aware that the perceived idea that "socialism" is what Stalin and Hitler espoused is flawed which should lead most to reconsider exactly what socialism could be in a non-hierarchical structure.

For anyone not familiar with Tucker Carlson, don't think he is a good guy for accidentally saying some true things. After he correctly identifies these real problems, his "solutions" are always to stop the flood of brown immigrants entering the country (I've never seen him with anything bad to say about Norwegian immigrants) and recently that women should get back to marrying and keeping homes like they used to. Don't confuse him for a good guy.

There aren't a flood of Norwegians or any non-browns or blacks. Secondly, the flood of browns are illiterate and overwhelmingly on some sort of welfare program. Third, the flood drives wages down for Americans. Fourth, there are criminals and diseases in that flood. Fifth, they are not citizens yet they can easily vote in places like California which doesn't verify citizenship. So you have foreigners selecting our polticians--nuts! Sixth, why do they get to cheat and sneak in while other wait ten years. If you allow this you have no rule of law. When you have contempt for the law on a mass scale civi society breaks down. When they say to abolish property, what is meant? Personal belongings? Real Estate? Ultimate underlying property ownership by the public??
@KoolKinchishKat
@KoolKinchishKat 3 жыл бұрын
You mean when socialists/communists talk about abolishing property? It's definitely not workers' personal property - even Marx made a point of saying it wasn't that. If you have a car to get around, keep your car - but if you own a fleet of 10 000 cars and charge poor folks to rent them, you might find those cars taken away and given to people who actually need them. The main thing is abolishing the right of a tiny class to own all/most of the real estate, factories, land, capital, machines, information, and so on, allowing them to dictate the terms and purposes of production. Under socialism, these would be made public property, to be controlled democratically by the people who actually work to produce the things society needs. Likewise, the goods produced would be distributed according to the needs of society, not in order to make money for a handful of people. Look into workers' cooperatives around the world for good examples of what this might look like.
@codex8085
@codex8085 3 жыл бұрын
@@KoolKinchishKat except its quite clear that Marx's brief comment on their being no need to abolish personal property was not true, since civil forfeiture is a big part of the ideology. Any dissident loses everything, there is no principle here. What is which what isnt. Many socialists states seize without compensation simply for convenience. If the state had any interest in seizing your goods, they are gone. Co=operatives exist inside free societies. Anti-trust laws and nationalizing monopolies also exists. This is not the definition of Marxism obviously since it offers nothing new.

richard i read a paper that said that the optimum tax rate on corporate profit is negative, and it had a bunch of calculus in it, and I'm thinking to myself, "optimal for whom?" and It seems like the implication is that the govt should actually reward businesses for capital gains and corporate profits and that will help everyone. But I can't imagine how that would help wage earners get what they deserve...in any case, I'm worried about how difficult it is to get tax revenue from corporate profits and i need some reassurance that we can maybe change the system from the inside out....more cooperatives, maybe? idk. i'd love to learn economics

I used to say that the time for unions has come and gone because laws now protect workers and the layer of union management was just another of enormous waste of money that could have gone to better things. Now, I'm rethinking it because wages (including the minimum wage) are being kept artificially low and benefits are being slashed at almost every company. Every company is using the "peer company analysis" model to slash benefits of its employees. Well of course if a few companies slash benefits, every other similar company in their peer group can justify slashing benefits as well, so it's just a vicious cycle. A union can help employees get benefits and may be the path that employees have to take to fight back. But instead of unions, how about companies being better than the other companies in the same peer group by adding benefits? You'll get better and more loyal employees in the long run, rather than employees who will leave at the first chance of a better opportunity.

The problem we have now is that the common worker is being/has been turned into an asset by capitalism. How does a business/corporation treat an asset? Well they try to purchase the asset as cheaply as possible, they try and figure out way to get the maximum output from the asset while putting the very least amount of money into it they possibly can. How does this translate into the way corporations treat their workers? Just step back and look at what has been happening over the past several years. Pensions are pretty much non existent today, benefits are reduced to the bare minimums if they are offered at all, they expect people to work longer hours for the same pay.... How many companies used the billions of dollars they got in tax breaks to increase workers wages or benefits instead of using it to buy back their own stock or give their top executives massive pay increases or millions of dollars in bonuses?

Good insight and this is why the conservative progressive approach is needed that does not go to war against religious communities and that is not against moral norms. There is nothing that is progressive about not supporting marriage and personal commitments. Too many liberals are into "means testing" that gives preference for unmarried families to the extreme over families that stay together. The stupid policies we have now discourage commitment, create a punitive system of child support and means testing that destroys the incentive to work, and that do not support having disadvantaged people, to include minorities, start their own businesses. Cooperatives are a good idea but too many progressives are into a nanny state over changes that would give the common person control over their own life. So called progressives in too many cases want to enslave people by making them too dependent on the government and by allowing public schools to deteriorate. Bernie Sanders has good points on wanting more education for all and in universal health care that would actually help businesses since that would get all business out of the health care business and would free them to focus on thier core mission and thrive. American Businesses are shouldering the burden of the overpriced US Healthcare system. FACT American employers spend nearly $1.2 trillion annually on healthcare for their employees and their families, and this equals the $1.2 trillion spent annually by the federal government on Medicare and Medicaid combined. The nonsense of the healthcare lobbyist of the cost of universal healthcare being so expensive is exposed in this fact. If everyone was taxed, progressively, to cover the 1.2 Trillion, then the result would be a big boon for business and be an actual tax cut for them. Further, the government could be in a powerful negotiating position to bargain with the pharmaceutical industry and every other health care provider so as to contain costs. This is the single biggest fear of the vast majority of US people and poll after poll tells you that. Progressives need to develop a strategy so that you can sell this and many other progressive ideas to conservative religious people. Real progressives are for letting everyone have what ever personal religious belief they want. If you get religious organizations out of the healthcare business with all the baggage that entails, you will be able to easily put in place many progressive benefits for the masses, especially women. You then side step all the objections about women's health care options since you get all these outside interest out of the responsibility of providing health care. This all is relevant here because these are examples of how progressives continually fail to frame the argument in smart terms that could garner 80% of public support that would be so overwhelming that nothing could withstand the change. I say 80% because I am liberally estimating that no one working in healthcare or in the pharmaceutical industries would want the change and neither would the top 1% of the society plus I add in people that also vote against their own interests no matter what just to be contrarians.

I am surprised Wolff does not have a better handle on how unhelpful it is to speak in terms of the false dichotomy of socialism vs capitalism. To 99% of people these terms represent a simplistic and mythical extremes, and in reality no human society can or will ever function without using both private and collective ownership, and markets guided by government rules and planning. Where and how to draw the boundaries will never be clear or easy or have perfect results, but as long as we speak of economics using the terms from past tribal conflict, the primitive parts of our brains will derail any chance for reasonable conversation. Wolff has so many good ideas, but they won't go far in America until economic thinkers like him help people outgrow the tribal myth that one must decide between "socialism" or "capitalism".

But what is Capitalism about if not the flow of money. That flow of money is what facilitates prosperity. These people at the top, the millionaires and billionaires have choked off the flow of money. They are anathema to capitalism. The free flow of money is not anathema to Socialism and there is no reason to believe that Socialism is or should be at odds with Capitalism so long as Capitalism doesn't put itself at odds with Socialism. Job losses due to automation should not come at the cost of people's being able to afford the products of automation. That's killing the goose that laid the golden egg. People should have a guaranteed income, not necessarily a guaranteed job. If you need jobs to facilitate the illusion of productivity but don't have jobs to pass around because of automation then you have to redefine what constitutes a job. For instance, pay people to go to school. Who knows? Maybe the world will be able to come up with solutions to the seemingly intractable problems it now faces.

But Professor WOLFF, do the enterprises run cooperatively and profitably by members of the Cooperatives in Northern Spain and in Italy and other places not ALSO use the Capitalist system. There is nothing wrong with Capitalism, Sir, as a way of allocating resources, IT IS BETTER THAN ANY OTHER.. THE PROBLEM IS NOT WITH CAPITALISM. Up to the time before the 70s when the so-called Neoliberals messed around with the system in order to enrich themselves at the expense of the rest of us, the system worked quite well. Being so rich with all that spare money enabled them to support legislatures to change the system and the tax regimes. It is now money that counts more than democracy. This perhaps should be the thrust of your lectures. The Neoliberals constant propagandizing, and the wrongful association of social legislation with the system in the Soviet Union (which they called Marxism or Socialism) terrified people. The social legisation at various levels in most of the democratic, developed nations has successfully made enormous changes. That is what terrifies the small wealthy elites that pay to run the system in the USA and who by various undemocratic means seek to preserve the system that enriches them at the expense of many others. Please talk more about that PROFESSOR WOLFF

Look at the example of love and compassion Jesus demonstrated in the four gospels. Christians had better wake up, start reading their bibles, and get out of Republican politics. Politicised Christianity, focused on hating groups of people, and playing up to the rich, is absolute heresy.

The problem with socialism is that it goes against human nature. Machiavelli was neither socialist nor capitalist, but understood what motivated man. I suggest reacquainting yourself with The Prince and The Discourses for insights as to how a government actually rules.

I respect Richard but he's wrong in this instance. Rational thought will never enter the equation with the evangelical base. Hence the sobriquet 'Evangelical". Magical thinking(?) is their baseline. There is no reasoning with religious fanatics. And now they dominate the supreme court for the forseeable future. Happy new year?

What George proposes is simply a type of social democracy; land funding the government. The government doesnt need any funding if there is a central bank

Tucker Carlson gets a lot of flak, but he is often on point and doesn’t fear ruffling the feathers of his own republican colleagues. I can dig that. He’s not given enough credit for his nuance.

You're still confusing Mercantilism with Capitalism. You're not solely responsible for this though. They Keyenesians and Chicago-schoolers are not just complicit in this, but are in fact primarily responsible for setting up the Mercantilist system under the guise of Laissez Faire Capitalism. When the state and its bankers have a monopoly on legal money enforced by men with guns, you don't have a free market by any stretch of the imagination.

The "free market" has one goal.... Profit. Therefore, the free market has only one end game.... Rule. So you are ignoring human elements in your theory. Mainly, the seven deadly sins that the "free market" needs to survive. Free market capitalists always blame crony capitalism... Well, the free market highway ends at crony capitalism and there are no detours...so it needs traffic lights and speed limits to contain it, if the hope is content, amicable drivers.

@@chadsimmons4496 Profit is not evil... unfounded assertion and not an argument. Profit does not equal rule... unfounded assertion and not an argument. The free market does not need sins... unfounded assertion and not an argument. No government does not equal no rules. A private owner of a road can put speed limits on his roads too... No government needed for that. I need rational objective arguments based on first principles and empirical evidence. Assertions simply showing that you don't like my arguments don't count... I already know socialists don't like rational arguments or objective moral philosophy. Robbery is immoral, even when you call it "taxation" or "redistribution". Roads, hospitals, police, trains, fire departments, doctors, medicine, schools, universities etc. all predate the income tax started in 1913 by the way...
