The third generation of the Mazda 2 has been on sale since 2015 but with continuous revisions it easily keeps up with it's rivals and surpasses them in some ways. The mild hybrid system makes for slick gear changes, a useable stop start system and some of the best fuel sipping economy I have ever experienced from a petrol car. I highly rate this one.

For folks that are thinking about buying the car (coming from the owner of one with 115hp 2022.model year): Decent engine, quite nimble and really fast up until highway speeds, if you know how to drive natural aspirated manual. Very fuel efficient (average 5.3 l/100km in/out of city combined). Gearbox is a joy to use. Seats and the rest of the cabin are outstanding, certainly the best in a car of that size and price. Relatively comfy ride. Downsides - it has absolutely no noise insulation, loud at highway speeds. Installing some insulation in the trunk does improve upon that. A lot of wind noise. Lacks an armrest, although the one you can order through dealer is just fine (and really pricey). I was told the front brake pads are rather small and will need to be replaced often. Haven't seen any problem with braking so far. Thanks for the review, it was very useful prior buying the car.

thank god this has an actual handbrake and not those fricken e-brake ones. I hate them, too expensive to repair and I just prefer the actual feel of buttons and physical parts I can use myself in a car. Also real tactical volume button is there and so glad they have a real speedometer not the screens like everything seems to be going to. I'm going to get this car soon as it seems to be the last few on the market that are budget friendly, don't have a CVT and are actually built to last. Owned a Mazda 2 a few years ago ( and even the old 2002 323 Protege) and learnt to drive in the 2 and they were the best cars I ever had.

Great video, Richard. I recently discovered this channel having followed ConquerDriving for a few years, and I'm really enjoying your reviews. It's nice to see someone be so positive about the baby Mazda. I find most reviews fixate on the N/A engine, calling it "sluggish" and bemoaning the lack of a turbo. But they don't mention that the car is as light as a feather, and the engine has more torque than most NA petrols of its size. So although it might not be as easy to point-and-shoot as an EcoBoost, the car can definitely hold its own when driven properly. I've had a 2016 model for a year now, which replaced a Clio 1.5 dCi. Despite being a turbo diesel, and having the same power and more torque, it definitely took longer to get the Clio's lardy arse up to speed than it does in the nimble, revvy Mazda. The lightness also makes it much more fun to drive on the twisty bits. So far, my only issues have been a parcel shelf peg falling off (probably my own hamfistedness), and the infotainment screen occasionally crashing in cold weather. Other than that, it hasn't put a foot wrong. I think I'm a Mazda convert - I'll definitely never go back to French anyway!

Came across this review as we had to change our 2019 model for a newer 2022 model (car crash, it proteceded the driver superbly, no injury at all). We just love this little gem of a car, it's fun, easy to drive in town and relaxing for longer drives as well.

Many people will press the clutch and leave the car in gear at a red light which is probably why Mazda chose a less aggressive rev help in first gear. Great and thorough review btw.

My first visit here…really straightforward, helpful thoughts on how to drive this car. I have wondered about NA cars of Mazda in a market full of small car turbos so think I will try one when looking to replace my car next year (tempted by MX5 but would need a second car for trolling around with the dog, or the occasional run out with more than one passenger!). With limited means in my case a car has to earn its keep! 😇 I like this 2, but maybe need a 3? Or a Leon if another of your comments suggests….🤔

My 2020 model Sport Nav shows overall average from new of 58.1 mpg - much higher than Mazda claim which is rare. I think that the ride could be better as the suspension is very firm. Maybe the 15 inch wheels that other models have would improve on this. You are right about what a good cruiser they are 70 in sixth and it just eats up the miles.

I have one - a 2018 limited edition (Sport Black plus) model with styling pack on it. It looks great and after two and a half years of ownership still enjoy driving it. Its fun yet refined at motorway speeds and economical to run. Agree with you about the cup holders though. A centre armrest would be good - I believe its a dealer fit accessory.

I sold my 2015 sports black for the 2020 Mazda g sport I must admit I still miss my little sports black it made such a throaty roar when I put it into 3rd to overtake . The GT sports is to me a more refined model but not so speedy but it does have lots of good things like heated seats & steering wheel and I love the hologram on the dash telling me what speed I’m doing or should be doing . So swings & roundabouts really I suppose .

Consumption can vary a lot depending on how the car is used, and driving style. My 2011 Clubman One (1.6 petrol 98hp) averaged 49mpg (over 30k miles), which I was quite happy with. Mostly motorway with a bit of rural. Ofcourse, use the same car for town driving and short hops, you'll be seeing very different numbers, likewise with speeding and more "sporty" driving. I thought it was a lot of fun to drive, but steep price and lacking some refinement. Grip in roundabouts was astonishing on that car!

Good video! The top-top trim you mentioned isn't available in my country but I don't mind as I *love* the blue leather on the dash and seats. If you don't want your compact car with an all-black interior choices are very limited. Pity Mazda removed this USP at the recent facelift. Seems that in terms of gearing it is very similar to the Mini One I once had, good economy but 6th gear is only for holding the speed.... I didn't mind as I prefer economy, plus it's no problem to shift with a nice box like the Mini and Mazda both have. The Mini did about 2700rpm in 6th at 75mph, and could easily reach 60mph in 2nd.

I've got a 2019 SE+ one of these. They're decent. First gear is a bit choppy and I kept stalling it initially because I learned to drive in a diesel, the car doesn't definitely "help" you much. I preferred the Golf I learned in tbh, but they're not bad and the MPG is really good. I commute to and from work every day on the motorway and haven't had any issues.

Definitely Mazda 3, it's a lovely car, nearly tears me away from my Leon but it just doesn't have enough umph, needs a turbo. I can't compare the 2 with the 3 though as they're on different levels when it comes to price and interior quality.

Excellent video. I appreciated your efforts to describe and demonstrate the driving function of the car under everyday situations. I found myself comparing this model with it's ancestor from 20 years ago. I have 2002 daily driver, which at 119,000km is still very healthy. In some ways, the Mazda 2's character has changed very little it seems. The willing engine and nicely tuned chassis and steering don't appear too different. The hybrid system and tall sixth gear certainly improve the fuel consumption. Mine averages about 40mpg if I'm careful. Mind you I have some steep hills and windy roads where I drive. Sixth gear would never be used in this environment. The only downer I see with the current model is the sleeker styling has reduced the car's function as a carryall. The boxy styling of it's ancestor pays dividends in sheer practicality.

What I like about this car is that it isn't for the lazy, common people, at least with the manual. It rewards the active person, who uses the great manual gearbox, and who is an enthusiast. Downshifts into second while rev-matching.. blissful and great sound. If you downshift, most of the time the torque is fine. It handles very well and is just an all around fun/unique car to drive compared to it's rivals. It has the "spirit" that Mazda are all about - Jinba Ittai - rider and horse together as one.
@Digi20

Some interesting fact about the tall gearing: the 115hp version is much shorter (meaning: the right way for the engine) geared and feels far more lively and grown up. The 75 and 90hp versions are so overly long geared you can almost reach topspeed in third which is kind of ridiculous for the driveability.

Great thorough review. It seems a really good car simple with no fake/plastic bumper parts etc. Too bad the automatic breaking system is only available in this top trim and not in me middle. For someone like myself who's not very fond of leather seats, is automatic breaking system essential in 2021?. Thanks in advance.

Test drove the 2 last year after your review. I specified the manual ver but unfortunately only got the auto to try due to demand. Must say I was quite disappointed at how it drove (such a shame as the rest of it feels a class above the alternatives), mostly because it just doesn't feel very coherent. The ride (even on small wheels) felt harsh and fidgety yet the engine (90ps) with the auto just felt gutless - a lot of noise but not as much progress (tried sport mode too). I tested Suzuki Swift Sport Hybrid earlier and even that felt a lot better dampened and quieter (shame they're 23k now). Handling wise I can tell the chassis dynamics is not bad but definitely isn't the most fun to drive in its class (even the mk7 fiesta felt better - maybe not better chassis dynamics but better steering feel). The front visibility isn't the best for a city car as the A pillar is not only thick but also at quite a sharp angle, and the bonnet is also surprisingly long. Though manual will definitely make the drivetrain feel more lively, it only fix part of the issue, hence didn't buy one (did plan to as I thought it would be the perfect mix of fun and practicality due to some links to the MX5 ND). I can see Mazda plan to carry on facelift (2023) and not bother with a full model change (maybe the new CEO could change this) - which is fine, but I think for the price won't recommend buying new. That's said the residue does seem very good.

Since you're driving manual, I recommend driving in Sports mode. Then you may not need to down shift from 6th to 4th to go uphill. Mine is an auto Mazda2 that I switch to Manual mode in Sports mode and it's an awesome drive on the highway, plus great fuel economy too even though it sounds strange to save fuel in Sports mode. Do you plan on testing the Yaris hybrid? Think hybrids like that are a great alternative for people that can’t charge at home, but want to reduce fuel costs. Or if you can only get cars from Mazda at the moment, the Mazda 2 hybrid is a straight up rebadged Yaris.

The 90 and 115 bhp variants (identical engines) safely map straight to 130. they have a soft limiter limiting power (above around 4000 rpm for example in the 90 variant) for economy, so it the power flatlines on the dynograph from around 3500/4000-6500 rpm. These engines are essentially detuned versions of the 130 bhp 1.5 they put in the MX-5 with some very minor changes. With the compression they run great on V power. In my mapping session, aside from removing the soft limiter, I had the AFR and timing optimized for better pulling power on the low. Before the map I also removed and plugged up the unusually large intake resonator (helmholtz) resonator before the air filter for more top end power. Commonly claimed power gains from this mod are + 3bhp (with a lot more intake noise), although this is unconfirmed. Drives great though and easily hits 60 in 8.5 s. Mine was the 90hp 2018 variant with the 5 SPD.

@@RichardFanders compared to the Mazda 2, engine wise, the N.D. throttle body is ever so slightly different, and it has double mass flywheel. Although the throttle body doesn't increase max HP, it does apparently make it feel slightly more instantaneous and responsive on the low. That's about it as far as I'm aware. There may be a smattering of other insignificant changes. I had mine mapped at BBRGTI, 90-130, widely considered Europe's best Mazda tuner. Well worth checking out if you're ever interested.

Careful with those remaps, changes compared to mx5 aren't that insignificant - mx5 has much stiffer crankshaft, allowing it to rew higher.

@@stefandenic7144 My rev limiter has been removed, although very I rarely take it to the redline anyway. Personally, if you're after that much more performance where you're always redlining or further, I would just buy a faster car. So for me, it's about making the stock configuration as good as it can be (within reason). I rarely take it above 5500 if I'm honest. If 6000 rpm can't handle 125HP at that rpm (I'd have to check the dynograph), it would raise some serious build quality issues.

Whereas i learned to drive in a hyundai i10 around 2008 version which is much easier than the terios im driving now. These terios are very unforgiving: stalling easily when moving off (i stalled it a lot when i first drove it after getting my licence) and you have to simultaneously control gas and cluch as it stalls with cluch only ( the i10 moves off with the cluch and reverse). The terios also doesn't have good visibility from the middle back, which is strange for a jeep category car, and this makes it harder to park as i have to turn to look from the back window while controlling the pedals and steering (the center mirror shows things way closer than they are).now to the positives: as a 4×4 car is good uphill and with bumps on the road of which we have plenty in Greece, and it's hight and foreword visibility helped me get used yo yhe steering as i was struggling before. Still not used to the size and space of the car in 5 months of driving it about 2× per week average most of which are small circuits around the neighbourhood outside a small town. Haven't driven it in the town centre yet but a few drives around settlements outside the city near our with an experienced driver, either my dad or my brother. Still afraid of getting close to other cars or walls and i go very slow almost stopped through such dpaces

Another great review, mate. Australian specs don't have the mild hybrid. Just the 1.5 litre with either manual or automatic. Plus the Australian spec Mazda 2 is Thailand sourced, not Mexico sourced as per the UK and Europe.I think versions of these lower end models with the 'leather' are just vinyl upholstered. It comes under Mazda's marketing name of 'Maztex' - much like old Mercedes-Benz's marketing name for their vinyl upholstery - MB Tex. At the end of the day, when was the last time you saw herds of Maztex and MB Tex grazing the fields?

Definitely took some time for me to adjust as the clutch on the petrol one was a lot less ‘forgiving’. I could just drive off with the clutch in the diesel without gas but for the petrol one it needed some gas to get it going. In the end I did prefer petrol because it gives you more control over your vehicle as it doesn’t ‘roll’ as far and you need more gas to get it going but that gives you more control over the vehicle.

I don't think I've seen a non turbo petrol car with gearing as tall as this one before. I think it's a bit overdone for the sake of economy. I doubt it does the engine much good to be lugged about at under 2000rpm at 70, where i can't even maintain the speed over the slightest of inclines. The older pre-facelift had shorter gearing, which I believe is much better for this engine. Other than that, I agree, it's rather a lovely car.

Interesting having such a tall 6th gear. Not the same car sure but my grandad's 2018 Honda Jazz, 1.3 with 6 gears is doing around 3200rpm in 6th.. Sure you can climb most hills in 6th gear, but whats the point of that gear if when cruising you need one higher! Maybe they should go back to labelling the top gear "E" for economy :P, only cruising no hill climbing/accelerating! (like some cars did on the transition from 4 gears to 5 gears).
