I'm a Ford man, and I'm glad to see real world examples of factory engines of the big 3, and see the Fords do so well. But I wouldn't turn a single engine in this test down! I was raised around this generation of engines, and it's great to see them run every time.

I can attest to the 340 being a big block killer. I used to race my '68 442 on Gratiot and Woodward in the early '70s. My 442 was set up for drag racing. Got beat by only 2 cars, one being a 340 Dart that absolutely obliterated me. That thing was sick and would wind up quick like a Ferrari. Much respect for those 340's.

I had a 1970 Dart Swinger with the 340, I had the X heads ported, some decent Stainless Valves and such. It was 30 over with Forged Pistons with a slight dome that was giving me right at 11 to 1 compression. I had a custom ground Isky cam with 242 intake duration 262 exhaust duration and 535 lift for both. It was a solid lifter Cam. The Rockers were Harland Sharp adjustable Roller Rockers and I ran a set of Hooker Headers similar to the ones on the 340 in this video. Victor Jr Intake and a seriously worked over 650 Double Pumper I bought off my Boss at the little Hot Rod Shop I worked at. I also had a 150 h.p Shot of Nitrous. 727 Auto with a 3200 Stall and 4.11 gears. That little Dart was a quick little car for no more than I had done to it. This was back in 1998 and for a "Street" Car running high 6.80's in the 1/8th and all I could fit under the ass end of it was a 255 60 15 it was a Drag Radial but stock leaf spring suspension with a decent set of slapper bars. I was never able to leave on the hit with a full 150 shot, I had to bring it in slowly but it was still fun and a cool car for a 20 year old Guy. All I was concerned back then was kicking the snot outta every 5.0 Mustang and 350 Camaro I ran up with on the street, and hell I was only 20 when I first started messing with that little Dart. I have had Chevys, Ford's, a Turbo 300 ZX, that Dart and a Short Bed standard Cab Hemi Ram but that little Dart was the most fun outta all them.

BY DESIGN THE SMALL BLOCK CHRYSLER ENGINE WAS BETTER. THE CAM IS HIGHER UP IN THE BLOCK A RACE ASPECT OF RACE ENGINES TODAY. WHICH REQUIRES SHORTER PUSHRODS WHICH MADE THE VALVE TRAIN LIGHTER AND ALLOW IT TO REV UP HIGHER WITH THE LESS VALVE FLOAT ALONG WITH THE STABLE RAIL TYPE ROCKER ARMS. In 1981 there was a kid who worked for Firestone Tires. He owned a 1970 Duster with a 340. He had “Eddie’s Valve Grinding” professionally rebuild his heads. He ran a single carb Holly 650 dbl pumper, 4 speed manual with 373 gears. In 1981 that car ran 13.20 quarter mile times (using 104 octane fuel). I remember he raced a 375hp 396 Chevelle and beat it by at least 2, maybe 3 car lengths. Not sure what it is about the 340 but with a little work they were fast.

I'm a diehard Ford fan but in 1969-1970 Plymouth had a promotional program called the Rapid Transit System. I remember visiting a dealership at that time and reading literature that documented a 340 Duster equipped with select options was faster in the quarter than a similarly equipped Hemi Roadrunner. There is a Hotrod magazine, road test of the 340 Cuda. The title was, "Beware the Quite Fish". They went on about how well the car ran, and how much nicer it would be to live with than the Hemi. We dream of 427 Cobras, but the only guy I know with a real one, says it's "awful". He said it's fun for about 2 miles, then your feet get hot, and no radio, heater, or roof gets old. He said if you're over 5'-10" you're too tall for it. I believe what you said. A 340 Challenger, would be sweet as hell, and I'm a Chevy guy.

My first car was a 340 six-pack Dodge Challenger. Yellow with a 4 speed and 390 or 391 gears. Whatever they came with at the time. I regret that I sold it many years ago. I think that the car would have been better using a state-of-the-art four-barrel rather than the three two's. One issue, not mentioned is the fact that it was hard to start. I saw an automatic 340 six pack at a car show recently. The owner expressed the same concern. I had a great amount of fun with it and sold it because I went to college. I bought a 71 Vega. They used to make more hp per cubic inch modified that any other Ford motor. The block won't hang in there with the power levels now. Windsor is a better motor, the crank gets oil priority, Clevelands don't. Windsors deck is .300" higher to. It got stuck with that boat anchor crankshaft with 3" mains. Cleveland had 2.79". Always though somebody would make a thick set of bearings to drop 2.79 bearing!! Windsor rods are 5.969" long giving it a much better rod stroke ratio. Know some guys that used to build junkyard 408 Windsors. 400m crank, Cleveland rods, boss 302 pistons and Cleveland heads! Worked pretty well, till they puked!! Nitrous will get a cheap motor?

So much for the factory ratings of 290hp for the Boss 302, DZ302, and 340-6. Sandbaggers. The Boss 302 cam was actually the K289 solid lifter grind, but was benefited by the 1.73:1 ratio Cleveland rocker arms, vs. the 289’s 1.6:1. Unlike the the DZ302 and Boss 302s, the T/A and AAR cars (the only cars ever offered with the 340-6) could be optioned with an automatic. And Chrysler followed standard 340 practice with the cam; manuals got the bigger one, automatics the smaller one. Then there is the Boss 351, appropriately named. It was the small block that thought it was a big block. The 71 Boss 351 was quicker in the 1/4 mile than the 71 429 CJ Mach 1. What’s really interesting about these comparison tests, is they should forever put to rest the B.S. that the Cleveland 4V ports were too big. Ford engineers knew EXACTLY what they were doing with those beautiful Cleveland 4V ports. If only they had been allowed to develop that engine over the decade.

The truth of the matter is this, the insurance companies dictated how much power the engines could produce, so the actual horsepower numbers were almost always way underrated. And those cars were very hard to compete with in their day. My brother had a 69 Gtx, 440/6pak, 4 speed, Dana 60 w/ 391 gears. It was only beat one time in a drag race by a 70 Chevelle w/ 454/4 speed. This kind of proves that heads reign supreme when we talk about performance....The chevy heads are decent, but nothing wild. The Mopar's "X" heads are better than typical stock castings, but again...nothing too crazy vs stock. The Boss heads are radical by comparison....canted, oversized valves, large ports, etc....and CRAZY (for stock) flow. I know that real world, some of these differences add up to small (if any real) changes but I do wonder if part of what helps the mopar is the 18 degree valve angle for less shrouding and flowing into a bigger bore (4.04 stock, 4.07 with an 0.030 overbore) for less valve shrouding vs the 23 degree valve angle of the chevy. Good stuff....I do remember that the old 340's, were factored b/w 299-314hp while the 6 pack's were factored in at 320hp.

Yeah all the small block mopar heads perform about the same when prepped the same. I wish they had of kept the poly heads and increased the port size for more than 318 inches but they needed a smaller head package for the new 64 a body. The poly (canted valve) strokers are putting up huge numbers for a big engine with a 318 head lol 351 Cleveland and the 429/460 ford are also one of my favorite engines. But our wedge heads do pretty good too for an economy engine the hemi and max wedge got all the factory attention until rules mandated small blocks and the w2 small block beast was born lol

I worked at a used car lot while I was in college in the early 80's and I can remember us getting a very pretty '73 or so Grand Torino with a 2V Cleveland and at the same time had a Mercury Montego which was a "hood rat" with a 2V 351 Windsor of roughly the same vintage.....The Montego would maul the Torino....Even though it was a bigger car built on the full size frame I believe....The Cleveland had no guts down low and by the time it did start to pull the Montego was only a memory....The bad-ass Clevelands may have been macho studs, but in my experience the run of the mill 2v's were frustrating dogs.

@@russellanderson746 funny thing is, the 2V versions were considered better street brawlers, when set up right. The Cleveland is short stroke high revving, with 4V or Boss heads wants to rev and continues to build power as it does. An absolutely legendary 1/4 mile engine, so dominant that the other manufacturers needed to get the rules changed to compete. On the street, low end grunt was not the Cleveland’s (4V) strong suit, and the 2V versions were thought to be better on the low end...for that stoplight to stoplight action (with headers, intake, etc.). But make no mistake, the Cleveland overall stands out as one of the best small blocks ever, and even non Ford fans who actually know engines will admit this.

340s are real badass but the Cleveland is king. My buddies ta 340 6pack was slo. Must have been something wrong with it. It was pretty(plum crazy) with side pipes but he didn’t spin it up to 7000. Maybe that was the problem. It was a new car and he would not let me drive it but my junk home built hydraulic Cleveland was a shocker and 7500 is where I shifted the top loader. Had to pull the pan a couple time a year to change out 3/7 rod bearings even with oil restrictors I was only 16 and didn’t know much about oiling Cleveland systems or could have made them more resilient. I changed to 428CJs for years then went to a good Motorsports block Cleveland and kicked some CJ ass along with all comers. I’m 70 now but there’s not much you can tell me about a Cleveland that I haven’t already done. Mr Glidden was no fool, but an insanely hard worker. I learned a lot from the man but only met him three times. The man was a genius with no rival. No one else knew the secret to head design and that is the main power making component. The high flowing fast burn head of today, Bob made his own in his home built furnace. He is responsible for the good heads you can buy today. You had to make you own back then. Anyone that wasn’t up to being that driven was a loser in those days. The days the man made the difference not who had the most money.

Always fun seeing people who don't know, learn about the performance Mopars. The 318 and the 360 were not the performance motors. Those were the truck motors and the big slow sedan motors. The 273 and its later big brother the 340 were the performance engines. They revved and delivered strong smooth power. Notice in that first comparison with the DZ302, you see that the 340 benefits from its bigger displacement, but it has power curves that look very close to the DZ302. The DZ302 was a race motor built for homologation purposes and about the only thing the DZ does that the 340 doesn't, is rev out. And that's largely just a function of the cam in it. You could get the 340 to spin to 7k with the right cam, valvetrain parts and an oil pump that will keep up. Same thing for the Boss 302, which was Ford's homologation setup for its Mustangs in T/A spec racing. The 340 has curves that look at lot like the race motors of the era.

It ran 14.0 in the 1/4 mile. Eventually, with a little comp 280 hydraulic cam, a Victor Jr intake, and a Holly 750 it ran 13.0 at just under 103 mph. I raced every single week for years and never lost to a 340 or a Cleveland. Then I stuck in an LT1 with a small solid roller cam. It went 12.57@ 106 mph. Again, no small blocks from anyone else beat it. Both engines beat a lot of big blocks too. This was in the early 80's thru the 90's. Also, i had a 70 Torino type NW. It was all original. I was told it was a factory 351C. But i didn't know the difference in 81. It was a factory 4 speed and 4.11 gears. I was told by many people how fast it was supposed to be. It was mediocre at best. I sold it and bought another Chevelle.

The 1968 340 was originally supposed to be designed for a 6,500 RPM redline. Due to the desire to use cast pistons, the factory valve springs were lightened to make it difficult to exceed 6,000 RPM, which became the production redline. Only the 1968 manual transmission had the larger camshaft, which had 20 degrees more duration at 0.050" than the automatic cam. With the 6,000 RPM redline, the automatic trans cam became the standard 340 can, including the Six Pack. In 1968 Mopar did sell replacement racing valve springs. Today, Isky makes higher tension drop in valve springs and the manual transmission camshaft is available from Crower and from Lunati, while Selling sells the automatic transmission cam. The factory valve springs lost even more tension after only a few street miles. 1968 manual trans cam = 232/242/112. Isky valve springs 3105-D, 130 lbs at 1.700", Isky retainers 3607-ST, these used to be sold by Mopar.

👉 Here's a recent Dyno test of an original, numbers-matching 340 6-pack from "Nick's Garage" channel. He owns a Canadian high performance auto shop with an in-house dyno room. He's an old-school Mopar aficionado, so he knows his stuff. The original 340 6-pack in his video only did about 326hp. That's more than originally advertised, but it's way lower than in ^this video. Here's that test: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/atiJeb2Yub2tiKM.html Ironically, Nick's Garage did a 351C dyno video a year or 2 ago, on the mid range power version of the Cleveland that was rated only about 300-ish horsepower. But it turned closer to 390hp!

Nick also put a 340 4barrel on the Dyno and it made a horsepower per cubic inch on the last pull with the customers carburetor that was originally from the engine, but take any engine be it Ford, Chevy, dodge pick one and Dyno 3 or 4 of the same engine and you get different numbers and the Cleveland is not really a small block like the Windsor

Yup, there some Dynos that are Heart Breakers. You can put the same Engine on 10 different Dynos and get 10 different H.P readings with some crazy ass swings. Dynos are a awesome tool for tuning and getting a baseline idea in H.P and Torque but a Drag Strip and Timing Lights are the tru test.

I thoroughly enjoyed this test. It is nice to see actual dyno results verses factory claimed numbers. I am a Ford fan but I will say that 340 6-pack held its own. With all of the tested engines being so close in HP and torque, I'm guessing the advantage would go to the lightest car with matching gear ratio for the application desired... i.e. drag racing or autocross.

We spun the original cam from a 340-6 on a cam doctor and with wear, it appears to be the automatic camshaft. This was during the resto of a 70 T/A Challenger and the motor had never been apart. The manual trans camshaft you are talking about was only used in 1968, then all 340's got the automatic camshaft. I still own my first car - a 69' 340 Dart, and have owned a 68' GTS 4 speed convertable that was all original with 40,000 original miles. I rebuilt the motor in the 69' and it had a stock MP 340 replacement cam and the idle on the 68' was noticeably rougher and it had less idle vacumn. This was 20+ years ago, but IIRC the 69' made 16-17 inches of vacuum at idle and the 68' made 14-15. You should run an Olds W31 small block. It was quite the screamer.

Awesome video. I grew up a Chevy guy (67 Camaro) a good friend of mine is/was a Ford guy (65 Mustang). We didn't have too many Mopars running around and the one guy I remember had a 440 in a Cuda. I think its cool to show some of the "less popular" offerings that were some what obtainable to muscle car kids of the 70's and 80's. For an example as a Chevy guy a DZ 302 came in my fathers 1969 Z28 or the SS 454 in a Chevelle and both were not going to happen on my part time gas station attendant job. So I built up a 327 L79 which was the 350 hp stock I got out of a 66 Chevelle SS that was wrecked. Great engine to start with and build up with higher compression pistons, cam, manifold and headers. It isn't as popular as the L76 365hp which I believe only came in Corvette. Same with Ford, I saw a lot of 289's a few 351 Windsor's but Boss, Super Cobra Jets not so much. Same thing with 426 Hemi or 440 Mags, the one guy I saw with a 440 was still cruising around with us high school kids but he was like 28 and had a full time job. Kind of the Dave Wooderson from Dazed and Confused LOL :) Sounds like a Dodge 340 would have been a great obtainable SB for a Mopar guy on a high schooler budget. I remember being pretty impressed with a guys all stock Buick 350, again it was no 455 Stage 2 but for a budget racer it was pretty solid.
