I believe it's all about mindsets. Micah & Rio were both defenders & understand the way Southgate is playing it, he was also a defender ... Lineker & Shearer were centre forwards - more explosive, more dynamic. At the end of the day the way the team plays, for the most part, is dictated by the manager & as a defender, Southgate is playing it safe. I understand the rationale that Rio was referring to - it doesn't matter how you play, what matters is the result but as a fan, it's boring to watch (just glad I didn't spend the money to go & watch them) & it looks as thou the team are floundering against opponents that, arguably, they should be wiping the floor with given the talent they have.

saka can play left back & that's where pep would play him for city as well. saka's the best option that england have at lb going forward & you play where you're needed

they can play in every position but you don't always get to play in the position that you would prefer. the majority of full backs are wingers or cb but nobody wants to play lb
