I didn't see 'Speed' until 2 years after it came out & to this day, I still love it. In my opinion, 'Speed' should be selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally/historically/aesthetically significant" because that's how awesome of a movie it is--in my opinion.

And I think he never thought that arresting Howard Payne would need to do much chasing at all, considering Payne's old age. The scene he discusses about the film "Speed". It was impactful, because the audience liked him (Daniels) and we did not expect him to be killed off so soon. But the part that sticks with you, is the audience realizes that Jack (Keanu) needed him. Harry was smarter with detecting bombs and disarming them. Harry (Daniels) knew that Howard Payne (Hopper) had beat him. Jack's challenge to catch the bomber would be far more challenging without his friend/partner. Daniels character was critical to the success of that film. Made us hate the antagonist even more.
